Firstly I am so shocked to find out Nothing Compares 2 U is a cover!!!!! I love that song so much, how didn't I find this out sooner?! (I went and listened to the original and Sinéad's is better imo)

Such a unique voice - the acapella song was beautiful. Jump In The River was also a good song, I just wish more of the album had been as upbeat

An okay album overall - not my sort of thing really. Beautiful voice though and some great and powerful lyrics

Rest in peace, Sinéad

Nothing compares to her.

Rated 8/10

I dug this - my one qualm is that the over abundance of synth really dated what would otherwise be a timeless record.

Rated 6/10

The only song of her’s I was familiar with was her version of Nothing Compares 2 U. Not huge into that song, but some of the other songs on here I really liked. The guitar and explosive drum hits coming in near the end of Last Day Of Our Acquaintance are really good. The lyrics on The Emperor’s New Clothes and Black Boys On Mopeds were great too.

Rated 2/10

Nice voice, but this album is so boring..

Rated 8/10

Positively surprised. A lot of variety on this album. The songs are a bit long but its all a pleasant listen.

Rated 10/10

Really enjoyed this album. She had an amazing voice and the songs are excellent. Nothing Compares 2 U is completely worthy of all the accolades. When it first came out, I felt it was ridiculously overplayed on MTV, but many years later (and many years wiser) I gave it a closer listen and realized how powerful and emotional it is. Still think so today. Probably the only misstep of the album is the cheesy fake gunshot sound and revved-up beat that starts off Jump in the River immediately after the amazing mood of NC2U. It's like getting ice water dumped on you. Beyond that, though, it's a great album. Easy 5.

It's an incredible powerful album, but also heavy. Her voice is second to none

Rated 8/10

It's quite an interesting and moody record. I like a lot of these tracks, and I like the whole of it. It doesn't sound dated at all and has plenty of depth and feeling to it. I think a lot of that is conveyed via her singing which I'm really impressed with. Nothing Compares 2 U is obviously brilliant, but that song more than any other highlights just how incredible her voice is. So raw and full of emotion, but also incredibly powerful.

3.5 rounded up.

I found this album to be nice to listen to.

Liked tracks: The Emperor's New Clothes, Nothing Compares 2 U, Jump in the River, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance

Pretty ok

I've never been a huge Sinéad O'Connor fan, but always respected her as a person. She stood up for her opinions (which were ultimately found to be 100% correct) against the Catholic church to enormous backlash, and then really leaned into them. When she died, I watched the video of her being booed at the Bob Dylan tribute concert. It's hard to believe that THAT crowd, of all crowds, would have done that.

Anyway, I think this is the first time I've listened to this album in full. It's a bit dated, and Nothing Compares was really played to death when I was a child, but it is undeniably a brilliant album. Fantastic singing, great production, and very emotional. Three Babies, Emporers New Clothes, and Nothing Compares are all highlights, and there aren't any bad songs on here. Definitely one of the best pop albums of the 90s. 9/10

Her voice is good and some of the songs are really good, but some seem to drag a little to me. It's fine.

Rated 8/10

phew damn, sometimes there’s albums that aren’t really my genre, and then there’s albums that aren’t really my genre done by someone so undeniably talented I get swept up in it all the same

Rated 6/10

Breathy, epic, and saccharine. I hate how this album is mixed/mastered. Some good tunes, but a lot of the impact is blunted because of the mix.

Rated 8/10

A real one, RIP Sinead. Never heard this album before - not quite what I expected (in a good way!) only knowing Nothing Compares.

Rated 6/10

I only knew Nothing compares 2 u from this one. Her vocal ability is undoubtedly great; the tracks where it's just her and minimal instrumentation (I am stretched on your grave) really highlight this.
Enjoyed: three babies, black boys on mopeds, nothing compares 2 u, i do not want what i haven't got (her vocals are haunting)
Pretty solid, but not in favorite album territory, 3*

Rated 6/10

Spacey post-new wave sounds, the music is pretty slow mellow minor key stuff with a mix of piano, acoustic guitars strumming, electrics chugging and some synth/keyboard accents. It's all bedding for the wide-ranging and impassioned vocals/lyrics which are the real driving force of the album. Nothing Compares 2 U is an incredible performance but none of the rest reaches those heights - it's not bad, but a bit slow and samey.

Rated 8/10

This album was a pleasant surprise for me, as I only knew O'Connor from her hit cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U", which is one of those rare cases where the cover surpasses the original.

But this album is much more than that. It is a haunting and atmospheric example of alternative rock, with some hard-hitting songs that touch on personal and social issues. O'Connor sings about her miscarriages in "Three Babies", and about racism and police brutality in Britain in "Black Boys on Mopeds".

O'Connor's voice is powerful and emotional, and the music is often sparse and simple, creating a contrast between the intensity of her vocals and the simplicity of the arrangements. The album shows O'Connor's courage and honesty as a singer-songwriter, and her ability to create beautiful and memorable melodies.

This album is not an easy listen, but it is a rewarding one. It is one of the best alternative rock albums of the 90s, and I would give it 4 stars out of 5.
