This is a highly entertaining rap quartet who bring great lyrics and a real sense of fun and energy to their flows. It sounds like a talented group of friends who are trying to make each other laugh over the top of boisterous jazzy production. There’s enough single power across the tracklist that it more than earns the almost hour long run time.

There’s an interesting tension between the deliberately controversial lyrics on a song like Pack the Pipe, and the fact that you’re listening to what sounds like four classically trained theatre kids. Other tracks like Return of the B-Boy just sound like a group of boys having the most amazing party in the world.

With some notable exceptions, the humour has aged very well. In fact, the skits act as spacey, rich interludes which neatly glue the songs together. It would be a much poorer release without them. It’s also a great opportunity for them to showcase their excellent singing.

Good toons and a good beat. Some amusing rhymes (Ya Mama) but mostly the lyrics resonate a standard hip-hop victimised persecution complex which I hate.

Hadn't heard of them before but I assume they probably got gunned down somewhere a few years later

okay. not my favorite.

Wollte schön das aktuelle Album bei der Gartenarbeit hören. Hat mir den Abend versaut. Ganz knapp an 1 Stern vorbei. Drecksmusik mit Dreckstexten

Rated 6/10

I wasn't aware of this group or album. Despite a few cringy and dated skits, it was quite a fun album!

Rated 4/10

Music’s alright. Hate the skits.

Rated 6/10

I like the upbeat, funky nature of the beats and I like their vibe. It's pretty good fun.

what is the instrument you hear on 90s rap albums ? a synth? a keyboard of some sort? whatever it is, need it injected into my veins.

the pharcyde is a group i knew of (mostly their biggest hit, Runnin’) but never dove into for reasons still unknown to me. glad my introduction was through their debut. it’s a solid effort. lively production with verses to match. love how animated these guys sound. i wish some of the interludes were their own full songs (especially Pack the Pipe)

definitely something i’ll be revisiting.

Jazzy samples and wordy verses - like a West coast Native Tongues: upbeat, funny, and wide ranging.

Rated 4/10

Fun for a bit, always better than Gangsta Rap, but it becomes pretty darn boring after a while...

2** as I don't want to offend

Rated 6/10

Fun album, 3*. Nothing that blew my mind, but enjoyed listening to it. Some lyrics were super silly.
Highlights: soul flower

Rated 8/10

Pitch perfect nineties hiphop. Point of for rampant misogyny.

Based on the two singles I already know from this group (Passin' Me By and Runnin'), I expected to like this a lot more than I did. But the production really lets it down. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is - poor mixing maybe? There are a few great songs on here, but (as always), the skits are unnecessary. I'm glad those have fallen out of fashion for the most part. Soul Flower, Ya Mama (which I found much funnier than I expected), and Passin' Me By are the only songs that really stood out for me. Overall, worth a listen, but hasn't aged that well. Good to hear some alternative hip hop from the west coast in the early 90s though - glad it wasn't all gangsta.

Rated 8/10

The back half runs a touch long, but I love the jazzy samples and diversity of each rapper’s flow.

Rated 4/10

Didn’t really enjoy this one. Seemed very generic.
