I absolutely cannot stand Neil Young, and this album is a distillation of everything I dislike about his artistic output. The music is generic, the lyrics are meandering and bordering on incompetent, and either the man cannot sing, or he badly needs someone to tell him not to strain for notes he can’t reach.
Other reviews describe this as unfiltered tragedy, and I can certainly see that, but unfiltered tragedy only works if the performer is actually expressive and capable of delivering. This just ends up whiny and annoying.

Hot take, I just don't enjoy Neil Young's voice, but then again I just don't like it when singers aren't trying to hit the notes. 2*

Such an amazing mix of grief, but also somehow life affirming.

Good album. Some hidden gems.
Rated 8/10
Less annoying than his other albums, felt like the music was almost worth the nasal tone.
Rated 6/10
A tragic heartbroken album that draws on a few different NY styles. There are the country-adjacent folksy acoustic guitar with twangy arrangements and close harmonies songs, the solo piano ballads, and the hard-rocking proto-grunge dirges. Individually I don't think any of these songs are among his best, other than excuisite desolation of Albuquerque. There are better versions of each of these styles - but together it works perfectly as a deep dive into the darkness of loss and disillusionment.
Favorites: Roll another Number, Albuquerque

F yeah. 4.0

It's alright but it doesn't standout much to me.

This album has personal history with Young that everyone knows about, how it was written and recorded around the time of two deaths close to him. So of course there are unequivocal references to drugs (heroin) and those deaths. There's something about a cocky saloon piano that thrills me. I always chuckle, though, that Young sings like a muppet.

Very bluesy for Neil Young, and I don't mean sad, because most of his albums are sad, but this one feels like I'm in a dingey bar with poor lighting, and that can be a good and a bad thing. A good chunk of the songs just feel too stereotypical rocker for my taste, but sometimes this album gets very powerful, and you can hear ALL the inspiration for those 90s slacker rock groups, which was particularly great. Perhaps the most mixed bag Neil Young album I've heard, it was still a treat to engage with at times, just wish it embraced the somber side more, even if every other Neil Young album does that too, I'd prefer leaving it to Crazy Horse collaborations for the rock.

Ordentliches Album aber ohne Highlights. Es ist der Rocksound der 70er, ein bisschen Beatkeller, etwas Country und Neils prägnante Stimme. Gelungen sind die Kombinationen aus Piano und Mundharmonika z.B. „Borrowed Tune“ oder „Mellow My Mind“.
Rated 8/10
It's Neil, of course sometimes the vocal is a bit "off". And he appears to be a very grumpy man. But it sounds beautiful, and that's what matters.
Rated 8/10
Likeable and listenable, with a Stones-esque sneering rock edge.
Rated 2/10
For many he's close to god-like, to me, he's annoying.
This album has no merit at all.
Rated 8/10
I liked the album surprisingly well. I always enjoy listening to Neil Young from time to time.

Great more Neil Young, but now he’s trying to sound like Lou Reed. I actually don’t hate it.
Rated 10/10
Ahhh, tequila Neil.
It's a sad one.
2nd favourite of the ditch trilogy.
Never completely clicked with me the way On the Beach and (almost ditch trilogy album) Zuma did. Guess I prefer weed and cocaine Neils. Still 10 off 10, I love most Neils.
Rated 4/10
I am grasping at straws here.
Rated 6/10
70s rock love the shit out of this probably. Not really interesting for me. I don't like his voice that much. And I reeally dont like the fact that the vocals are so bad on this one. The bro always moves closer and farther from the mic.
Rated 6/10
Ei parasta Neil Youngia, mutta kelpo levy silti. 3/5
