Loved this at the time, hasn't aged great but still has it's moments (Drunkship of Lanterns!). very overindulgent and pretentious but can't express how exciting this seemed at the time off the back of ATDI

Glad Soukous music got some representation in the list. Lots of people here showing their ass by implying that the only "true "African music should be raw and not use modern production techniques; also removing any agency from artists by implying that the sound is for Western audiences and not for stylistic preferences. Also without minimising the crime committed if you don't separate the art from the artist, much of this list is null and void.

shouldn't be on the list but not a bad album. Craig Nicholls gave good copy to journalists so they were immensely over hyped, but there's still some standouts. I did see them around this era live and they were fine, very sloppy

Great, but thought I'd like it more than I did - some of the funkier tracks don't really work (Dreams by the Sea sounds like the Theme from Shaft...), but it does have a nice vibe to it throughout. The final live track is fantastic

Can't believe haven't heard this before, so so good. Ignore the morons saying Phair can't sing

"you're probably shy and introspective/that's not part of my objective"
