WarU2

Rated 4/10

Hmmm. This is going to be an interesting ride. On the one hand, I find Bono to be an insufferable cockwomble, but on the other the early works of U2 are held in high regard.

At the time, I was definitely not a fan. Didn’t really enjoy U2 until the Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree combo.

So…..with that said. It’s all a bit meh for me. I don’t see the greatness others see. Like a cake where all the ingredients are things I like, but it tastes wrong when you eat it. Hard to pin down what it is.

Missed this at the time, but I like it.

Nothing particularly unique going on, but it’s an agreeable set of tunes!

It’s all rather beautiful. I’m new to this. I know Yoshimi and this is clearly in the same vein.

It’s proper Prog Rock. Too soon to say how much I’ll end up rating this one. It clearly takes multiple listens to open up.

Mad how good this is.

Bowie blew the doors off with this. Light years ahead of its time.

5 - even if you hate it, it’s still like a signpost to the future.

Never heard all of this before.

I’ve generally preferred radio friendly Genesis to the prog version. (Ducks for cover).

This is about as Prog as I can handle. It’s dancing close to cliche for me.

But it’s worth working through. Overall I enjoyed it.

3 for me. Didn’t love it, but can see why others do.

It’s a masterpiece. Can’t explain how otherworldly this was to my young ears when I first heard it. Haunting, stark and just beautiful. It was like nothing else I’d heard.

Amazing that they did this in 1981…it’s way ahead of its time and has to be one of the best albums of the 80s

Easy 5

Breath of fresh air when it landed. Holds up brilliantly well.

Great album. For once the trendy & hip "it" band were actually as good as the hype.

4.5

Dear lord, he can’t sing a note!

I tried given all the 5 star reviews, but this is just ruined by the vocals. Pity, there’s a good band here otherwise. Really not surprised I didnt discover this in the 80s.

Generous 2

I can hear why this is an important album and how it is a precursor to a lot of 90s stuff to come.

But I’m not enjoying it at all…

Rave music royalty. The Rave scene was a cultural moment which this is a core part of. However, trying to analyse music like this is spectacularly missing the point of it.

It absolutely deserves to be here. It is a key part of the journey to modern dance music.

And if you're ever in need of something to dance to whilst chemically enhanced then I would imagine this still does the trick perfectly.

Nowadays it’s good for when i’m stuck in traffic and need to zone out!
