Like most albums from the 90s, this is just tooooo long. At just over 49 minutes, I feel like this could've been such a better album if about 10-15 minutes had been trimmed. This is a fine album but the good tracks feel few and far between.

The 'cake' on top of a tire on top of the tire on top of... a pita? a pizza? on top of a clock on top of a reel on top of a diner plate that may or may not have a doily on it looks like one of those nightmare savoury sandwich cakes from the 1960s filled with eggs, tuna, shrimp, ham, and chicken that were iced with mayonnaise, cream cheese, or sour cream.

Kinda turns my stomach looking at it.

Ok, I've spent many years on the bad side of the fence for REM. This was better than I expected and much to my chagrin, I'm giving it 4 stars. My husband will forever remember this and I will likely never live this down. That being said, I will not be independently listening to REM.

It sounds so much like Talking Heads took a cue from the second track, Golden Years. And that's not a bad thing. I also like those really big bold, ballad Bowie songs like Word on a Wing.

This record is stacked with big name guest appearances but other than Work It, I'm not really fucking with this. She can rap and there are some decent beats but I'm never gonna spin this one again. She doesn't do enough rapping, too many guest appearances and too much talking.

There's just too much Tom Waits on this list. The songs, Clap Hands, Jockey Full of Bourbon and Time, are pretty good. But the carnivalesuqeness of this wears me down fast. It's too bad because he has a beautiful voice as is showcased on the last song, Time.

It reminds me of the Fallout video games in all the best ways. Allmusic apparently said this album is a raunchy mix of demented gibberish, blaring sax, and explosive swing. And what a great string of words put together. 3.5 stars, rounded down

I don't know if this is good or not. What I do know is that this is just not my kind of music. It's just a bit too boring and samesy. To each their own, I suppose.
