Lounge music from the point of view of a toxic male protagonist. I’m hoping this whole project is an example of British “humor”.
I need a British person to explain to me how this actually made it to their charts in 1996.

Phew. While listening to the first track I thought I was about to suffer through a one star album. Luckily she then reigned in the falsetto and was climbing towards the stars before she threw in av Joni Mitchell cover at the end which got an instant deduction.

I’m not a metal fan, but it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I’m not the right person to try to judge this genre. I bet some people love it.
Oh this album suffered by showing up a day after an album of the same genre which felt much more rich and joyful. But I have to reining myself that this one was released four years prior. These guys were really early pioneers in hip hop. And so even though it hasn’t aged all that well, the others may never had achieved their heights without standing on Grandmaster Flash’s shoulders.
Come ON!! Hip hop with a serving of phat juicy funk! Hip hop that makes your hips swing and your feet hop! All aboard this trip!!
This album feels like a party I want to attend.
Great find for me.
Reading other reviews turns out this artist has caused harm, and I apologize to anybody who is offended but I am rating solely based on my reaction to the music.
It does take some balls to make your debut album a double album and then pad it with covers. And that San Jose cover is not good. But the first half made me smile with that big 80s drum machine sound. Not a standout overall for me.

When I go to the Wiki summary and the main factor is that an album won the Mercury prize, my heart sinks. I’m almost through with this list and those have tended to be bland British albums. This is an exception. Beautiful instrumentation, moving vocals, lyrics that bring you into the artist’s world. I never would have found this on my own, and I do think I’m better for having heard it. Exactly what this oat is for! Win! Ironically, I read somewhere that this album is not in the most recent edition of the book. That’s truly a shame.

I will admit it took several listenings before I connected with this one. Each track is lengthy and got some it seemed to me that it took a bit of time for him to get to the groove he was looking for. So I tended to like the ends of the songs on the earlier listen, and then have to go back to appreciate it more from the start once I kind of knew where he was heading.
The Can album on this list is one of my very favorite finds, so I had high hopes. This didn’t quite meet that level but the more I listen the more I enjoy this.

Meh. There’s a real sameness to it all musically, isn’t there. I’m not a huge fan of the vocal style. I’m glad I read the Wiki write-up about it being a cycle of stories about the end of a relationship, to know to focus in on the lyrics. Not what I was expecting. Male angst about feeling trapped in a jail. Great.
It’s probably about a 2.5 star album for me. The last two tracks were slightly better than the rest (or I was just worn down). I can’t justify three stars.

I simply do not understand the love for this. Some fetish for deep voices? Pretentious lyrics? A desire to hear the same style song repeatedly? Is a song deep and meaningful just because the lyrics sound depressing and the voice is basso? Good lord this couldn’t end soon enough.
Rated 4/10
This gets boring far before it gets finished.

Ahhhh Peter Frampton! One of my first crushes. Many pictures of this man were on my wall. To be honest I preferred his “I’m In You” album. As a teen girl I was the target for that one. But this will do. Good bluesy 70s rock! This man can play the guitar! And sing! Sounds good, looks good. Taking off a star because the songs can go on a bit long, but .that’s what guitarists do .
Rated 4/10
Not my jam- my pet peeve is vocalists who yell with no attempt at melody. But I’ll give it two stars instead of one, because a) I know that’s the genre, b) I do like the overall energy and c) they kept it brief.
Rated 4/10
It’s too harsh for me, although occasionally they let in some tenderness. I hear the talent.
I just checked my history and they have FOUR albums on this list?? And I’ve said pretty much the same thing about each one of them. I guess we’re both consistent.
Rated 2/10
Boring vocals are not enough to make up for the uninteresting instrumentals/beats. The songs are all far too long seeing considering all the repetition. This album felt like it was never going to end.
Rated 6/10
This is easy to listen to. It’s got a laid back vibe.
Nothing groundbreaking.
I can do without the tracks with vocals. But much of the rest of it is absolutely lovely.
Rated 10/10
I can be ambivalent about REM.I don’t love everything they did. But THIS album, which I’ve owned since back in the day, is full of gorgeous music and lyrics. They’re best in my opinion. Night Swimming is an elite song.

I’ll be honest. I saw that this was a Tom Waits album and I groaned. This is my fifth (and final) album of his in this list. I tend to dislike most of his stuff. The prior four albums each got 2 star ratings from me. I’m not a fan. The first track on this album made me think I was in for a miserable 50+ minutes. But dammit, this album is a masterpiece. I don’t understand it myself! I still don’t love his voice, and don’t understand many of his pretentious lyrics, but the rhythms and the overall tone made the whole thing so much more than the sum of its parts. I’ve gotta hand it to the man, he got me with this one.
Rated 2/10
Didn’t enjoy this one. I have to be really annoyed to give an album only one star, but personally this was at most 1.5. Headache-inducing.
Just went back and saw i gave Sonic Youth 1 Star for a 1.5 album with too much distortion, so in fairness this will probably get the same rating. Although perhaps two stars would average it correctly, not sure this is the one in would want to favor
