You want to know what disco music was like? This is peak. Brought me RIGHT back.
Idk if it’s a five star album but it is a great time capsule, so maybe?

This is so bad. So muddy. The horns sound out of tune. It plods along. I’m so upset that anything this poorly made is on the list. Suppose it could get two stars but they have other albums on the list and this put me in a bad mood so I’m not going to be generous.

Randy Newman songs sound like Randy Newman songs. The musical variety is almost nonexistent so it’s all about the lyrics. This album has some interesting things to offer in that respect. You need to pay attention to get the value of this one.

What in the world am I listening to?
There’s a man with a deep mellow pleasant voice singing country/folk ballads.
When suddenly- a whole tribute song to COCAINE appears!
Never mind we’re back to more mundane ballads.
However let’s wind things up with an 8 minute long instrumental based on Indian music ok? That makes sense?
THIS ALBUM IS WHACKY

Also: his voice is VERY similar to Chris Isaak, which made me look up of any of his albums are on this list. And there are none! Which is also whacky!!!

There are some beautiful tracks on here. Unfortunately there are also some throwaways.
Still above average overall.

I expected this to be more prog rock than it actually was. I didn’t love it but I enjoyed quite a few of the tracks. The first two tracks and Outside Women Blues are my three faves.

It’s a classic. One of the first. Light-hearted rap. The collab with Aerosmith to bring in some of the rock fans. It’s Tricky is so infectious. Loses steam now and then so not quite 5 stars.

This album’s tracks all the same energy level. Very laid back. It risks becoming boring but the quality of the lead female vocal is so very soothing, and blends in with the saxophone so smoothly. I can imagine a warm tropical day lounging on a patio with this on and just feeling like I would be floating. It is very much a background album. When I paid attention too closely it didn’t hold up as well.

Ok, one good thing about listening to this album: I will never again confuse Emerson Lake and Palmer with Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

That’s they only good thing though, because I still really dislike prog rock.

I don’t know what genre this is considered. I’m not sure what the heck this is but I freaking love it! The instrumentals especially. Really don’t need the vocals, in fact they take away from the atmosphere. That and the harshness of Broken Little Sister make this not quite five stars for me. But I will be exploring this further. Very cool.

I’m trying to decide who these guys sound like. I can pinpoint it but I think it’s because it’s really very generic pop. Maybe the Shins? Toad the Wet Sprocket? It’s very pleasant to listen to. But it also wouldn’t be out of place in my local grocery store. It didn’t push anything forward, and I’m not convinced I would come back to this instead of the groups that did it before them. But

I like the name of this band, and the style of this band, but I’ve tried before and can not muster up a ton of enthusiasm for their sound. There’s nothing majorly off-putting, but nothing that really grabs me either.
I will say that I got a laugh out of some of the lyrics on “Crown of Thorn”.

I never much cared for their hit “Cult of Personality” so I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this one.? There’s a fair bit of funk mixed in with this rock. Musicianship is tight. Nice surprise.

This is some good high energy fun. If it were released now I’d probably give it four stars. But it was released in 1973! The roots of punk. And fearless gender nonconformity. Trail Blazers.

Also want to send out personal thanks for David Johansen- used to go watch him live on the regular when he was performing as Buster Poindexter. What joy he brought to the world. RIP

Good upbeat energy, several deservedly big hits. Goes by quickly. It didn’t stop me in my tracks like a five star album would. But it definitely had me smiling.

This is just so dreamy from start to finish. Not quite enough variety over 72 minutes to get all 5 stars. But close!

First song has an almost bluesy feel, but after that things slowed down to a glacial pace. My 21st century brain has been wired for short sound bites and those snoozers were tough for me. But I did enjoy Gypsy Woman, which sounded suspiciously like the Doors, but at least had energy behind it. That track actually was unlike the rest of the album, and we go right back to slow sad vibraphone music to close it out.
I would give it 2.5 stars, but I am going to round up because he at least seems to be trying something out of the ordinary with this album.
