Is this sacrilege? I’ve never really loved The Beach Boys. I couldn’t care less about Pet Sounds. Don’t like their harmonies much. Some of their early beachy tunes are Fun (fun, fun).
This album was all the stuff I dislike about The Beach Boys, with more pretension. I suppose it’s more “ambitious”, but man you really feel how hard he’s working. I feel like his mental strain comes through, and I do not want to share his burden.

My second time listening to a Taylor Swift album.(Thought it was the first but looked in my history of this project and there was a forgettable one 600 albums ago). Interesting, as a woman far too old to be in Taylor’s demographic, but who has younger family members who are big fans…
It’s really all about the lyrics, isn’t it? Her voice is thin and some of the melodies are actually irritating. But she really is a genius at tapping into adolescent romanticism. And her voice not sounding trained may actually work in her favor, as she sounds like she could be your friend from next door singing her heart out. In fact, I think the combination of lyrical genius and bang-average musicianship is precisely the secret to her incredible success. Any young girl who has had her first heartbreak is going to feel seen by these lyrics. That’s a big market. Good for her I suppose. I’m going to go back to grownup music now.

Not for me, sorry. I just don’t have the attention span for this. I did listen to the entire thing but it was difficult and I don’t think it will happen again. I agree with the reviewer who says without context this will fly over people’s heads. It’s way beyond me.

This feels very over-produced. There’s so much going on that the rhythms get lost under it all. Excellent musicianship though.

A great find!
I’m too old to have experienced rave culture (although I’m not dead yet so who knows), but the first half or so of this album is what I imagine the music would be like. Great dance music. Then there is a big switch to much more layered music on what I suppose was side B. Some really gorgeous tracks. I honestly enjoyed this start to finish 4.5 stars

Uggghhhh. That singing.

She likes words. Fine.
Lots of beautiful poetic lyrics.

Just be a darned poet! Don’t make me listen to your voice do the same damn moves over every single song on every single album!

Not my favorite of theirs. It’s not bad, just missing something. I know reggae isn’t known for its high energy, but alot of this seems to be missing some oomph even for reggae.

This album is a half hour of preserved musical history. It’s really like going back to a very special moment in time. For my personal taste it’s a four star album, but the fact that it catches all the feels of the time earns it the full five.

I was NOT expecting a band called Massive Attack to be so smooth! Lovely stuff.
I started this project knowing nothing about trip-hop, and am going to enjoy doing a deep dive into the genre.

I love when this list throws me something I’ve never heard of, that is a genre I don’t really listen to, and I end up really enjoying it!

My favorite album is U2’s War album. This reminds alot of that- but it turns it this one was released years earlier!! Gotta give credit where it’s due.

Spotify says this group has metal fans and disco fans. That about sums it up, denser sounds with good rhythms. More only critique is at times the vocals aren’t my favorite (lyrics are his it’s the growling delivery..), but that’s a nitpick. Great find!

It’s pretty. Could use a little more oomph, but after a few listens the lyrics do get into your head. I underestimated it the first time through. A good album for an autumn day looking at the pretty foliage. Pleasant, in a somber thoughtful way. At first listen in would have given it there stars and in now debating between a 4 or 5!

I just want peace in my life. Her style of singing doesn’t bring it. I don’t hate it, it’s unique, but I know I’ll never go back to it in my own. Once is enough.

lol I’ve never heard of this band or heard any of the songs, but this sounds exactly like most of the stuff I listened to in the 80s. It’s very catchy. Originality isn’t everything. If it’s fun it’s fun. It’s fun.

Pavement has been one of my favorite discoveries of this project. I like how the manage to have melody in their industrial sound.

Love the finger picking on this one. There’s some stuff that feels familiar like American blues but then most of it is distinctly African. Towards the end it seemed a bit repetitive but that probably comes from me not understanding the lyrics. The instrumentation is the high point though.
3.5 stars, not sure which way I’ll round. Deserves several listens.

I think this is one of those albums where you have to take be in a specific mood. I can imagine some late night, feeling a bit depressed, or contemplative, this could hit the spot. That’s not really my vibe today so much of this felt draggy. The production was too much. Just give me Ray and a piano, no need for background singers and strings.
But still, he’s so smooth, it certainly isn’t all bad.

This album is all over the place. I enjoyed several of the tracks. On some the vocals were too grating. It’s very very British.
