Different ClassPulp

Rated 8/10

I was looking forward to hearing this album after the previous one that appeared on here ended up being lackluster for me. Different class has way more memorable songs like Disco 2000 and Common People, and Jarvis Cocker is at his best as a vocalist.

kinda forgot I have this album on CD, so it was a nice surprise that this came up. I now realise that when it comes to rap and hip hop, my preference is east coast rap which features beastie boys, run dmc, public enemy and grandmaster flash. It is west coast rap where the lyrical content is more about gangs, drugs and sex, whereas east coast either goes into more sociopolitical issues in a more nuanced style or keeps certain serious subjects in a more subtle light, sometimes with a more jolly and friendlier sound. Rap music isn't my favourite genre so my opinions may be flawed and biased, so I should really try listening to other rap albums in order to form a much more accurate and objective opinion.

The ChronicDr. Dre

Rated 6/10

I do enjoy rap and hip hop music from time to time. mainly Eminem, Public Enemy and beastie Boys. This album didn't really work for me due to it being mostly about drugs, gang violence and misogyny. I guess I prefer my rap music to have some form of tongue-in-cheek humour, or is straight up socio-politically charged, or at least has some substance in the lyrics. Eminem works because a lot of his lyrics have either some form of satire, criticises politics, the music industry and the media, or at least tells a personal story about rags to riches. Public enemy's fear of a black planet works because of its comments on racism and social injustices. I would like to give NWA's FTP album a listen though.

Not their best album. I can only say that Brown sugar and Wild Horses are the most memorable songs out of this album because I previously listened to them on a compilation. The rest of the songs are ok but most of them I don't remember much of.

This album really shows off the perfect harmonies between MIke D, MCA and Ad-Rock. Almost like the Hip-Hop variant of the Beach Boys. However I do prefer License to Ill since it is shorter, simpler and features two of my favourite songs. This does not have as many memorable tracks and I find the overabundence of sampling makes the tracks seem to blend together. However heavy sampling can work when there is a central theme, like in Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet. So I don't hate this album but the songs don't stay in my head for that long.

This album was better than expected. Going in, the only song I knew of was More Than a Feeling, which is an ok song, but i actually did enjoy most of the songs on the rest of the album. I kinda see this as being inspired by bands like Deep Purple and Queen, with a bit of prog rock thrown in.

Ninety808 State

Rated 6/10

never heard of this band before. They kinda remind me of The Chemical Brothers, except there's hardly any lyrics. This kind of music was definitely built for nightclubs in the 90s. Some of the tracks were alright. A few of them somewhat bordered on 90s electro-industrial. I still prefer TCB, daft punk and The prodigy though.

I never expected this album to appear on here, especially since it is mostly a compilation of their first two albums. This actually happens to be the first ever album I bought. I don't have it anymore since I now have Barely Legal and Veni Vdid Vicious, although I still listened to it since there were a couple of non album originals on there. Also the mixing feels slightly rougher, like some of the songs sound more like demo versions. not really a bad thing but I will stick to the proper albums from now on. Still though, the hives are one of my favourite bands.

nice to hear see some 90s britpop on here again after seeing too many 60s folk rock albums. Although I would have preferred to listened to different class or his and hers, I still liked this album, despite not knowing any of the songs from it. I always forget how good Jarvis Cocker is as a vocalist.

when I hear the phrase "french duo electronic music group", I immediately think of daft punk. I don't mind the song Air, but I could not get through this album. once again I prefer my electronic music to be more energetic and catchy

This is an ok album. I prefer it to his So album which was mostly soft rock with the exception of Sledgehammer and Big Time which are a pair of upbeat bangers. This album does go into more of a post punk sound with a few that are kinda catchy.

Somehow this band manages to combine Rockabilly with punk in order to create the Psychobilly microgenre, and I quite enjoyed it, even though some of the songs are covers of actual rockabilly artists. I can imagine someone like Rob Zombie being at least partially inspired by this album

Van HalenVan Halen

Rated 8/10

A pretty decent album. makes a change from hearing Jump on various radio stations so many times. At least I can appreciate a higher variety of riffs and solos from this debut album. I say this band pretty much bridged the gap between classic rock and hair metal

The CarsThe Cars

Rated 8/10

Never heard of this band before. But I did enjoy the album. pretty much 35 minutes of proper classic rock and doesn't go all soft at any point. But it does partially delve into a little bit of post punk at times.

GraceJeff Buckley

Rated 8/10

I knew this album would turn up eventually. I was kinda expecting it to be mostly soft rock. what I didnt realise how hugely influential it would be on later alt rock bands like Radiohead, Muse and early coldplay. Three bands that wouldn't be as well known if Jeff Buckley kept going throughout the 90s and into the 2000s. Due to a tragic accident we will never know how much of an impact he would have had on the 21st century. So I do agree with everyone that this is a pretty damn good album, even though a few of the slower songs don't quite appeal to me. Not going to stop me from giving it a high rating though.

The BendsRadiohead

Rated 4/10

Listened to this one last year, and I prefer Ok Computer. Although The Bends does have Just on it which is my favourite radiohead album. Aside from that though it's not an album I intend to come back to any time soon.

Paris 1919John Cale

Rated 2/10

gave up after two songs. not a fan of artists who are self indulgent. never really cared for the velvet underground either

I never heard of this band before but I got interested in the fact that they were a partial influence on industrial artists such as Trent Reznor and Al Jourgensen. Although I did not expect this album to sound so experimental, which didn't exactly make it an easy listen for me. However I do appreciate their influence on synthpop and essentially bridge the gap between post punk and new wave. I was reminded of bands like depeche mode, gary numan and new order. bands I prefer for being more melodic and synth heavy and less experimental sounding. Maybe I will give this band's other albums a listen in future.

GooSonic Youth

Rated 6/10

not a bad album. I can appreciate an alt rock band that throws in plenty of guitar distortions, amateurish recording style and grungy vocals, but I still prefer pixies because they are a bit more upbeat and relatively more energetic.

HomeworkDaft Punk

Rated 6/10

I am a bit conflicted on this album. On the one hand it introduced us to one of the forerunners of electrohouse/dance music, taking their place alongside Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers, and features some very catchy hits such as Around The World and Da Funk. On the other hand though, most of the songs can be very repetitive and do not provide much substance, and listening to the entire album which itself is very long can somewhat be tedious. It is way better to hear and experience these tracks at a nightclub or in a live setting, where daft punk absolutely excelled at putting on some of the best live performances ever. It is a pity that they are no longer touring. This would be followed up with Discovery which I consider to be their best album.
