SisterSonic Youth

Rated 8/10

When I was first getting into SY I listened to this album and it was not my favorite. I haven’t returned to it till now, and I can see why some people call this their best album. I don’t fully agree, but it is definitely up there. This album is where Sonic Youth found their sound. Prior albums were pure noise and no wave. This album showcases what they would become, balancing noise with beauty in a way that only Sonic Youth can.

What was that? The music was whatever but the vocals, were they intentionally bad or is that really how that guy sounds? That was some of the worst singing I’ve ever experienced.

It’s mostly covers, but I understand why it’s included in the list. It’s basically punk rocks meet the Beatles. It’s not something I put on all the time, but there are some great songs on here, and they put their own sound on the covers.

Just a great album. There’s a bit of a lull about 2/3 of the way through, but even the less great songs are still pretty solid. I think Box of Rain is my favorite song on the album, Friend of the Devil is close though. But from Rain to Ripple is such a satisfying run of songs. And then truckin’ to end it is so good.

The Weight is an American classic, it’s one of those songs that’s risen past the artist into the zeitgeist. Everyone knows it, even if they don’t know who made it. The rest of the album was fine, there’s a few songs I liked and some duds.

While it wasn’t my favorite album it was delightfully unique. I’d heard the killing moon before in passing but that was all I knew from these guys. So I was expecting a somewhat generic 80’s band. These guys stand out with interesting instrument choices and melodies.

I’m starting to think whoever made this list might have bad taste. This was such a generic bland rock album.

I will never understand the adulation this band receives. They’re a middle of the road white boy blues band. Sure they had some hits but they constantly get put in the same ranks as the Beatles and that’s a crime. It’s like comparing AC/DC to Led Zeppelin, they’re both rock bands but one of them progressed and pushed boundaries, and the other had some hits but ultimately had their one sound and stuck with it. And I’m not knocking that, I like AC/DC, they’re great at what they do, they rock. But putting them in the same ranks as Zep would be disingenuous. Same goes for the Stones, they’re fine, I like a few songs, but they don’t deserve the pedigree they enjoy. This is their 8th album and it sounds like the seven that came before it. Country Honk was fun though.

Heads up, if you look for this on YouTube, the first album that comes up is the 30th anniversary remix album. So that’s what I listened to all the way through before realizing my mistake. Checked out a few tracks from the original and they sound dated in comparison. The remix album is pretty good though, I liked a few songs, most were just ok.

Great album. A few songs didn’t quite hit, but overall it flows well and the production is terrific.

Disc one and two are the original album. That’s what I listened to. It’s still a mammoth of an album at 140+ minutes but it surprisingly did not grow stale. I mean Jazz is near the end of the album and is one of the best tracks. I stilll think they could have made this into two albums, but I was pleasantly surprised.
