Absolute gem of a record. Deeply steeped in nostalgia for me. Takes me back to trips in dad's big old black square body Chev. He had this album on casette and played the shit out of it.

Loss of LifeMGMT

Rated 4/10

I liked MGMT's album that was included on the 1001 official list, but this one is God awful. I use the word "liked" loosely there.... I rated it a 3....the album on the original list was called Oracular Spectacular. Maybe a better word than liked would be "tolerated". Anyways, today's record is indie rock without a pulse. It's insanely boring. Nothing happens. Plus, the album was released in 2024, so it is too young to be included in a list like this.

Favourite song: Dancing in Babylon

Least favourite songs: Loss of Life

Early electronica crossed with disco. It's an EP, so it's only 30 mins long, and it features some titties on the album cover. That's about all that's good with it. It isn't bad, it's just kinda.... Boring....

Not much of note really happens. There is mostly moaning moreso than lyrics. It coulda been something good, they just kinda missed the mark.

Favourite songs: "Timing, Forget the Timing"

Least favourite songs: <<H>> Friend

This album has all of the Presidents of the United States of America's hits on it.... Lump, Peaches, Kitty, Boll Weevil, Dune Buggy...... Alt rock that doesn't take itself seriously at all. Kinda similar to the quirkiness of Primus. I think my first exposure to Presidents of the USA was through Weird Al's parody of Lump (his song was called Gump.... It was on his album Bad Hair Day).

Favourite songs: Lump, Peaches, Feather Pluckn, Dune Buggy, Kick Out the Jams, Back Porch, Naked and Famous, Boll Weevil, Kitty, Candy, Confusion, Candy Cigarette, Carolyn's Booty

Least favourite songs: Wake Up, Stranger

Indie folk from the '10s. All I'd ever heard of theirs was a cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean that they did. This album is mostly consistent of horribly depressing folk. Only the title track actually has any energy to it at all. I mean, it's not bad music, it's just.... the kind of folk music you may find in the background of a soap opera. Soft, light, and depressing with male/female harmonized vocals. They remind me of Johnnyswim, but much more depressing.

Favourite songs: Barton Hollow, Billie Jean, 20 Years, Forget Me Not

Least favourite songs: C'est La Mort

Steven Wilson is one of the founding members of the band Porcupine Tree. This is one of his solo albums. This is fairly light prog..... Mid at best, but not terrible.

Favourite songs: Home Invasion / Regret #9, Hand Cannot Erase, First Regret / 3 Years Older, Happy Returns / Ascendant Here On...

Least favourite songs: Ancestral

Singer is a dead ringer for Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch. This band is Finnish alt rock, that reminds me somewhat of H.I.M., Saint Astonia, or Breaking Benjamin. Less heavy, more operatic. Not terrible... Except for Cradled in Love.... Wtf was that?!?

Favourite songs: Running Out of Time, Kamikaze Love

Least favourite songs: Cradled in Love, The Happy Song

DioramaSilverchair

Rated 4/10

The truly painful sound of a band selling its soul to pop in order to sell records. Guaranteed this album was recommended by someone who discovered the band at this point or later. No one who was a fan of Silverchair when they were straight grunge/alt rock would enjoy this shit. I was never really a die hard Silverchair fan... I knew of their existence, but was never super invested in their careers... But watching another band be sacrificed to the pop overlords is a truly awful experience. One Way Mule, and The Lever are the only songs with a pulse on this album. The rest of it is regurgitated crap that may sound good on radio. By times they verge on Michael Buble territory with the orchestral baroque pop sound (especially prevolent in the abysmal opening song, Across the Night). By times this also reminds me of Panic! At The Disco (notably Tuna in the Brine). This is the same disappointment I felt when Theory of a Deadman sold out.

Favourite songs: One Way Mule, The Lever

Least favourite songs: Across the Night, The Greatest View, Tuna in the Brine, Luv Your Life, My Favourite Thing, After All These Years

This is the whitest soft rock you will ever hear.... That just so happens to be sung by a Spaniard. It is steeped in 80's cheese. Not a bad album at all. It's only downfall really is the sheer size of the album. 1hr 20min is far too long for my ADHD ass. By times it sounds like The Beatles.

Favourite songs: Entre Salitre y Sudor, El Dia Que Fue, El Camino De La Piel, El Viejo Camino De La Via Del Tren, Palabras Sin Nombre, El Nuevo Calor, Rozando La Eternidad, Paraguas Una Tarde De Diciembre Gris, Musica Ratonera, El Ritmo De La Called, Rosas En Agua, Rosa Gris, Tras La Cortina

Least favourite songs: Amarga, El Chico De Los Ojos Asustados, En El Anden, Carne De Bar

Get your headphones ready folks... This one literally starts with people banging.... Wtf....

This is like goth rock mixed with shoegaze. Nothing mixed with shoegaze is good. Shoegaze ruins everything it touches. The instrumental portion of this album is solid, but the singing is abysmal. When he belts his vocals he sounds like Danzig it which is pretty solid. Most of the rest of the time he moans about love and death. These guys definately stroke themselves to reruns of Dracula. They are really leaning into the romantasized death theme.

Also, there was no need to ruin poor Seals & Crofts song Summer Breeze. What a horrid cover of a solid song.

Favourite songs: Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All), Christian Woman

Least favourite songs: Machine Screw, Fay Wray Come Out and Play, Dark Side of the Womb, Summer Breeze

Cheer the fuck up

80's jangle pop. Sounds a lot like The Smiths but better (no mopey Morrissey to drag the mood down). The lead singer's delivery is also quite similar to Morrissey's style. These guys could even be like a proto-Barenaked Ladies by times.

Favourite songs: Anxious, We're Not Deep, Happy Hour, Flag Day, Reverend's Revenge, Over There, Lean On Me, Freedom, Sitting On A Fence, Get Up Off Our Knees, Sheep

Least favourite songs: Think For A Minute

Really solid German space rock/krautrock.

My ears detect a portion of the tone progression that is found in the N64 007: Goldeneye theme song in "Rosa".

Japanese nu-metal. Sounds like Korn/Slipknot by times. Interesting to hear the Japanese's take on the genre. The almost rapped lyrics are sung by someone who seems to have marbles in his mouth, so you can't really make out what he's saying. Plus half the lyrics are Japanese, and the screaming sounds like Call of Duty Zombies lol. They like to do that thing Korn does where they almost whisper lyrics, which is immediately followed by a violent beat drop and a lot of growling. Overall, an interesting listen. I like it better than American nu-metal. This album does suffer, however, from being way too long.

Favourite songs: Celeb Hunter, oDdEyヨ, Ichigo-philia, きみよし, Last/Exodus

Least favourite songs: Black Apartment, World's End

Reminds me a lot of The Go-Go's. Indie pop/rock. Also, the unenthusiastic vocal delivery reminds me of the singer from Peaches (specifically the song Fuck the Pain Away).

Least favourite songs: Too Late Now
