who knew sid the sloth made terrible avant garde pop? i certainly didnt and i wish i could go back to how life was before i did. the worst part is that is my 500th album and i couldnt be more disappointed with the choice.

this was a rollercoaster. like many others i saw the negative reviews and wondered how a pop album was so negatively received. immediately upon starting the album i was in full agreement with the reviews. everything just felt like a vapid ripoff of stuff better artists were doing. then around the middle of the album there was a few songs that felt like they actually put effort into. then the last few songs they decided to go back to making soulless garbage.

this is divided into three volumes on wikipedia so im going to listen to it like that; one at a time with a palate cleanser between each volume. ill rate each one and average them for the overall score.

volume one: this wasn't bad, there were a few standout songs. the quality of this gives me hope for the rest of the album. 4/5

volume two: less enjoyable than part one. if i hadnt taken a break i wouldve hated this but on its own its like a 3/5

volume three: i feel like this one was the least consistent. it had the highest highs but also had the lowest lows. 3/5

overall my only real complaint is the insane length. taken as three separate sections i dont love any of them but they werent awful either.

the opening had me really excited then we settled into the albums true nature; another midtempo britpop record. its fine but nothing exciting

my favorite album ive had in weeks. its corny and incredibly dated, but its theres some good guitar work on here. objectively its probably a 3 but it was a welcome change of pace so its gets a 4

one of the more enjoyable albums ive had recently. interesting melodies and only one or two songs was long enough to overstay its welcome.

not bad in any sort of technical sense, but i did not enjoy listening to it. i didnt mind when they actually focused on making music but tracks like wilson or the opening to like a swallow make this feel so a chore to listen to.

jay has made some of the top rap songs of the 2000s but unfortunately they are scattered throughout multiple albums. there are probably only two songs from this album that make that list. all the songs have good instrumentals and very slick production and the samples are excellent. i appreciate the fact that there weren't any interludes or skits but it still felt way too long.

i really enjoy metallica and i really enjoy a good symphony orchestra. while a few songs feel like a regular metallica live show with the symphony tacked on as an afterthought, most of the songs do a job of blending the two. some of the song choices were odd considering that there were some classics that were omitted. as live albums go, sounds great, and the symponic arrangements add interesting variations to the classics, but at the end of the day, i'd take the studio versions of most of these songs over the live ones. overall, its a bold and unique album but length and the live format make it though to sit through in one stretch.
