AjaSteely Dan

Rated 4/10

“A jazz-rock album which fuses cool jazz, blues, and pop into a masterpiece of an album “ ? Sounds like it should be brilliant , pity it is not.

I can like slow soulful jams and like jazz infusions normally but there is something in the high harmonies and keyboard here that leaves me cold.

But then “eye know” by de la soul saves the album. Peg is actually great song in a sea of mediocrity . Saving it from a 1

Bowie taking a stab at soul- but couldn't quite make up his mind whether he wanted to be Ziggy Stardust or James Brown. Still quintessentially Bowie but with some good stabs at soul

It’s funny if this was done by Clapton I’d hate it but Bowie pulls it off with out feeling like a safari in the ghetto

BugDinosaur Jr.

Rated 6/10

Alternative rock does not get much better than Dinosaur Jr.

J Mascis vocals sit well with jangly distortion

His talking languid style is interesting to listen to

Of it’s time jangly almost naive 60s pop

Maybe it’s Ray Davis voice that just sounds so 60s.

Soulful rnb /soul with notes of jazz .
As highly talented he is his smooth approach to singing sucks the energy a little . Good just not great
“Shit damn Mr” could have been very misogynistic but ends up being about consequences- still has elements of ownership of women

Never really listened to the Mac ( as they are not known ) before . Nice , mellow rock.

Cult following normally means great but undiscovered… not in this case

Interesting shoe gaze adjacent like a 90s version of the velvet underground and about as good.

Introspective shoe gaze . Does not quite do enough to keep me entertained - might of liked it more with a female singer - Kirsten Hirsch would kill this album.

I mean it’s as catchy as any other forgettable US “Punk” , but overall a little meh

The name Hűsker Dű implies an industrial band or metal with the proliferation of umlauts… buts its just Green Day lite

RevolverThe Beatles

Rated 8/10

The Beatles groundbreaking record but it’s not sgt peppers or the white album the it must be revolver

If your unsure why the Beatles are so highly regarded then remember that on Three separate occasions contemporary reviews were staggered by the diversity and innovation on display .

revolver sits in the middle and is no less worthy for that . Complete different to what came before.

Taxman - an angry jazzy rebuttal to actual tax problems . Still based on jangly guitars but with a driving baseline is followed by the symphonic pop of Eleanor rigby . Beautiful and slightly disturbing

The quaint Fab Four still can be found on songs like I’m only sleeping and she said but now with added sitar and the start of psychedelic sounds that would be expanded on in their next groundbreaking release

Yellow submarine and Dr Robot toy with being novelty songs but manage to stay relevant- just

80s synth pop band wakes up one morning possessed by NIN

New wave meets industrial, most songs are a bit more mellow and moody than “personal Jesus” but still good overall

Take Me ApartKelela

Rated 4/10

sounded pleasant and I enjoyed the lyrics as I tried to engage with this run of the mill rnb

Nice sounding if forgettable . Trying to work out what it delivers to warrant inclusion

Combing the funk metal stylings and anger of rage against the machine or claw finger, the punk ( modern American flavor) attitude of green day , some musical influences of nine inch Nails … all the elements to be great album , just feels a tad puerile.

Loaded magazine as an album or the sound of booming from a 13 year old boys bedroom .
