✝Justice

Rated 8/10

I brought this album randomly in 2007 when I worked at Best Buy. Didn’t know much about Justice, but I got hip real quick. It had been a while since I revisited it, but I feel like it still holds up. Great grooves and melodies. Sometimes the synth tones can get to be a little too dark for me. And repetitive. But there’s enough variety throughout the songs and the album for me to be able to bare it.

Man…I think I have to admit that I just don’t like the old school big band and easy listening type of music. Fine musicianship for sure. But it just doesn’t move me in any way.

There’s plenty of reviews that already state the sentiments I feel. This is pretty bland classic rock with little creativity

The raw energy of this album can not be overstated. It’s hard to capture the magic and feel of being live while in the studio. But they nailed it. My biggest beef with this album is the lyrics. They’re all hyper-sexualized metaphors that are so on the nose but he’s wailing them like it’s clever or with a “wink, wink”. Or idk, maybe he’s not. Either way, whenever I get an album that is just sex on sex on sex but trying to be clever in the way they describe it, it’s a turn off for me (put Aerosmith in this category too). BUT, with all that said, the music is kind of undeniable.

Really wanted to like this album. I like a couple of Jonathan Richman songs but had never listened to Modern Lovers. This had potential, but overall, it just did not do it for me.

I must admit, I’m only giving this a 3 because Apache is that damn important as a song. I’m a lover of hip hop, and the sample of Apache has been sliced and diced in so many ways to create great music in hip hop. Not to mention, my wife and I came out to Apache at our reception.

But man oh man is it tough to listen to an almost hour long album of congos and bongos dominating things. By the time I got to Pipeline, that song was so refreshing it felt like taking a nice warm bath.

Didn’t hate this album, but probably won’t ever listen to it in one full sitting again.

Musically, not bad. But lyrically, there’s multiple things that give me the ick.

Man!! Crazy to me that Jamiroquai is getting cultural appropriation thrown at them. And I’m a black man. I feel like they full heartedly appreciate the funk and jazz that inspired this music and at no moment does it feel like they’re stealing or trying to hide the roots of where this music stems from. They’re putting their own spin on too. When was the last time you heard a funk record with didgeridoo all over it?

Idk, I could be wrong. But what Jamiroquai does on this record feels authentic to me. And beyond that, there is just some solid grooves all over this album. I was going to give this a 4.5, but bumping it to a 5.

GracelandPaul Simon

Rated 6/10

For as much as I like Paul Simon, I had never really dug deeper into Graceland outside of the singles. This was fine. I’m surprised it’s so highly regarded though. At the time, I’m sure it seemed revolutionary. But listening with fresh ears and it just taking it in, it’s simply good.
