This album is like boogieing down in a bar, except the bar's been closed for 10 years, and your "boogie" is the stupor of a drunken homeless man. This album feels like Neil being strung up like a puppet at moments.
"Speakin Out" is a loose blues track, but listening to Neil play it the way he does, it makes me a bit uncomfortable, and "Roll Another Number" is an absolute stinker in the best way possible thanks to the way Neil just decides to take a step back from the microphone for the hell of it. At the same time, absolutely funny, but incredibly sad. I don't wanna go too much into individual songs, it's not my style, but the slow ode to depression and being beaten out, "Tired Eyes" is probably my fav. In short, as the albums progresses, it crumbles and breaks down in every aspect you look.
Truth be told, given its reputation, I expected it to be darker, but I feel like it being darker would just be a detriment and would be considered a mockery of itself. This way, it really reminds me of my own demon days. It's as real as it gets. And as good as it gets.

not Neil Young's best but still Neil Young
Rated 8/10
He always has me at Neil. Don’t even need to listen to it sometimes to know I am going to love his folky honky-tonk songs sung in an incredible aching voice. But, I felt that this one wasn’t as good as After the Gold Rush or Harvest so four stars.
Rated 8/10
Wasn't sure about the first few, but then that quieter song turned up and then the rest was pure gold xx
Rated 6/10
First listen. It’s alright. I like the earlier stuff and CSNY better.
Rated 4/10
Ok this is enough, I think this is the 4th Neil young album I’ve had to listen to. Neil Young is a greatest hits guy at best. He has some great songs, songs I really like, none of them are on this album. I thought it was hard to get through a regular Neil Young album, but this genre hopping mess was a true challenge. There’s not much redeeming on here.
Rated 4/10
I’m a big Neil Young fan. But this album should not be on the list.
Rated 8/10
I had not heard any of these songs before, but then I wanted to play some songs I had heard before so I played the album again. This album was raw and emotional. Many of his vocals can be strained. This is the album for when it’s 3:00 and everyone has left the party. Empty cans, bottles, and cups are strewn around the room and the floor is slightly sticky. The Rolling Stones often make music that is drunk (rowdy), this is drunk (sad). Favorites were Tonight’s The Night and Pt II, Borrowed Tune, Albuquerque, and New Mama.
Rated 4/10
Rated 8/10
Almost certainly some kind of masterpiece.
It's not a pleasant record to listen to with its themes of loss, mourning and death.
And it's pretty honest about drugs. When the man who wrote After the Goldrush sings that he stole this tune from the Rolling Stones because he's too wasted to write his own, then there's no glamourising of addiction here.
Of course it's sloppy and barely in tune and threaten to fall apart at any moment.
But it's a powerful record for all that. As though these wasted, drunken old Hippies have stood up (unsteadily) to come together and say "fuck it, we're still alive"
It's tough, but it's powerful.
Rated 4/10
This music is very country and bluesy (not my preference). I like some of Neil Young's folk music, and there is some of that in here on the back end of the album. But it's not enough to make this enjoyable for me.
Rated 4/10
This album honestly sounds embarrassing. Shit singing and mediocre folk rock.
Rated 6/10
Instrumentally, this isn't too bad at all – it's actually quite emotional and evocative on tracks where the piano takes a greater hold of the songwriting, and I like the rough-around-the-edges sound which allows some of the riffs to slice through effectively. I just can't get past the horrible whiny, off-key vocals on a great number of tracks, or indeed the use of harmonica.
Rated 8/10
If you're not in a state of grief when listening to this album (and I'm not) it's going to be a hell of a listen. I had to break it up across most of the day, it was so hard to take. Very powerful, well done, evocative as hell... and I don't want to listen to it again until the next time I'm grieving a loved one.
Absolutely brutal.
Rated 4/10
After going through this project. Starting to think that Neil young is overrated.
Rated 2/10
I'm fed up of this guy. Worst one yet. Probably another 6 albums to go
Rated 6/10
Yeah that was a quite good album Neil. I was Neil deep in work while listening to it
Rated 6/10
With seven albums by a single artist, it was clear that not all of them could be world-class. Neil Young has recorded some great music—but that’s not necessarily the case with this album, *Tonight’s The Night*. Instead, this is a good, but by no means outstanding, blues-rock album.
Is it worth listening to? Definitely yes.
Does it belong on a list of the 1001 best albums? Definitely not.
Rated 6/10
Like 'Rust Never Sleeps' he top and tails this album with a great track. But the sandwich filling is a mixed bag.
The rocky tracks are great.
The steel guitar country songs were boring.
The quality control is also a bit variable. 'Mellow My Mind' is an awful mess. The harmonica playing is excrutiating and he can't seem to hit a note. Any note - not just the usual top end struggles. Was he drunk?
I'd give this a 4 without the skips.
