I don't know this album but after reading a few reviews and the Wikipedia page, I really want to like it.
I don't hate this. I do kind of like of it. I don't know how to explain why this is different from that damn Trout Mask album, but it is. And it's much better. Someone said about Trout Mask that they listened while working out and now look like a cubist painting. If you did that with this album you'd look like a Paul Klee painting instead. Similar, but a different flavor and more specific. And I mean good on these guys for making this record in the 70s, way ahead of it's time for sure. I'm sure Les Claypool had this on repeat as a teenager. Some of it sounds like a soundtrack to some kind of weird psychological thriller or sci-fi movie. I feel like as weird as it is, you have to listen to it a couple times to really get it. I mean I'd give this 4 stars just for being one of the most interesting records I've heard. But you know what? I'm giving this one a 5/5. It's so weird in the best way. If it was any longer I might not rate it as high but for a quick 35 minutes, it's great.

This is weird is fuck. But then again, so am I.

Rated 8/10

honestly liked finding the grooves

Rated 2/10

Of course, it is not a beautiful listen. It is an unnerving, profoundly uncomfortable record. When assessing musical relevance, it is the avant-gardism of this record that makes it sufficiently significant to earn its inclusion in the list.

Well, Duck Stab/Buster & Glen was the longest 33 minutes of my life. This album is in the bottom 5 for this whole site and after listening to it, I can absolutely see why. This album feels like the worst drug trip that you could possibly have with music that's utter chaos with tinny quality to it, very odd vocals which go from this deeper sounding guy to an annoying cartoon character and lyrics that are just about the most random shit you could possibly imagine. All this combines into an album that is very rough on the ears and in my opinion, has got to be one of the worst things that humanity has ever created (that is, if this group even are humans)
Best Song: The Booker Tease
Worst Song: Birthday Boy

Woahh, this is extremely avant-garde. I've heard a lot of out-of-the-box albums before, though nothing as condensed and dedicated to humour as this. You can tell they had a lot of fun recording. It left me super confused by the end, like they were all in on a very funny joke I wasn't privy to. Though it didn't feel mean-spirited, more like light-hearted teasing than taunting. For that, I actually didn't hate its surreal collection of random instruments and noises. “Blue Rosebuds” reminded me of the animated web-series ENA, so that's a plus!

However, I'm not rating it any higher cause I don't think I'll ever "get" this type of music, and it would be dishonest of me. There were moments of genuine immersion (e.g., I actually liked “Weight Lifting Lulu”), but they don’t last long. At least I was never bored! I guess the bottom line is: I'm grateful that this challenge continues to expose me to stuff I'd never go out of my way to find. The overall experience of listening to deconstructions like this helps me reflect on how limiting the definition of "music" often is, even if nobody has to love the end product itself simply for being different.

I don't know if this is a 5 necessarily, but The Residents are true originals, and I love them. Just utterly bizarre, demented audio experiments, pretty much constantly on this thing. The Residents have gleefully set up shop within the rotting carcass of rock and roll, pop, and early electronica, and are selling curdled milk out of it. It's also surprisingly musical, genuinely eerie, and lots of fun at times. To be honest, I'd even argue that there are a couple of perfect songs here, but there are also a few more fragmented tracks that I'm still negotiating with. Although I revisit this album pretty regularly, so it may be a matter of time.

finally we’re getting sillayy
this haunted banjo kazooie music straight up made me feel unnerved and uncomfortable and creeped out during some parts, that’s art! and i think that’s beautiful
3.5 because i don’t know how much ill come back to it but i enjoyed myself thank you VERY much

What the actual fuck is this?!? Awful, awful album

Rated 2/10

No way! Absolutely no way.

This is the kind of pretentious art that people tell you you’re supposed to appreciate, but deep down, everyone knows this is total s-h-i-t

One of the worst—if not the worst—of the bad albums I’ve ever heard here. Sorry, Captain Beefheart, even you’re more original than this. I shouldn’t have given “Trout Mask Replica” a 1; now I can’t give this crap the 0 it deserves.

Rated 4/10

It does sound a bit like a duck getting stabbed, so I'll give them that. I tend to be more appreciative of experimental music than many on this site, and that's probably still true here. But I can't say I liked this record very much. There were occasionally some cool ideas, but it was awfully goofy—like a demented carnival ride. I was going to give them credit for discovering how fun it is to sing "Constantinople," but turns out the famous They Might Be Giants song is actually a cover of a song from the 50s. So The Residents lose their bonus point there.

Rated 2/10

Shout out to them for following what was in their heart.

I am a Residents sicko and y'all need to get on my level

Rated 8/10

I've been vaguely aware of The Residents for many years now but always been put off of checking out their music due to their reputation of being extremely avant-garde and abrasive. Well, after listening to this album I can say that they are definitely both of those things, but they also know how to write catchy music, albeit under many layers of weirdness that most will find off-putting. It's like a collection of sinister nursery rhymes put to music that kind of makes you want to bop your head but mostly makes you want to jump out of your skin.

Something about this kind of reminds me of David Lynch's work with how it finds a way to resonate on a visceral level whilst remaining largely inscrutable when you try to take it all in. Maybe that's just a case of the subject matter going over my head though. My understanding is that there is a significant element of parody to The Residents' work, and I only really picked up on a few of the references here myself. I get the impression that these guys were significantly more cultured than I am, and that's probably reflected in the nature of the musical allusions they draw, but even so, I see that as just meaning that there's more to the record waiting for me to discover.

Favourite tracks: Constantinople, Bach Is Dead, Hello Skinny

Rated 8/10

A joyously chaotic, resolutely bizarre half hour of an anarchist, dadaist middle finger to normal.

They take everything you think you know about pop music and warp it, turn it inside out, cut it up and reassemble it into strange music that could almost pass for songs.

The number of bands that wouldn't exist without the Residents opening the door - Ween, They Might Be Giants, Primus, for starters; TISM here in Australia - is a measure of their importance.

When the theme song from South Park, a sort of Duck Stab and soda, plays regularly on TV, and no-one turns a hair, then this really isn't that hard.

It's hilarious, it's ear opening, it's glorious.

That this sits as the fourth lowest ranking album on this website is a sad indication of how run of the mill audience tastes are. This is, it seems "caviar to the general".

Rated 4/10

Humorous but hard to listen to.
