In UteroNirvana

Rated 10/10

The problem with both of Nirvana's albums that are not named "Nevermind" is that I can't help but to compare them to Nevermind, and am then disappointed.

Listening to Scentless Apprentice also reminds me of how much I don't like Albini's style, even though it does fit In Utero a lot better than it did Rid Of Me (which I had just about a week before In Utero). Although maybe Scentless Apprentice wouldn't be saved by any other mixer anyway.

I kinda wanted to give this a 4/5, but I think it's still worth a 5/5 even though it's no Nevermind.

Passable rock music, entirely unremarkable. Mixing's a bit shit. Hardly noticed the album go by. Possibly because it's not even a full 30 minutes.

Morrissey singing in 2004 about how the US "president is never black" might prove that he's not a wise seer. Overall the lyrics are a bit shit, but it's still alright musically. This is my second Morrissey already, and I do have to wonder if he really needed to have four albums in this book (+ The Smiths ones too).

Also, that cover art is atrocious.

Hardly high art, but I had fun listening to it.

It's certainly not generic. I'm not gonna say that it's dogshit, since there's some interesting stuff in here, but I'm not gonna say that it's good either. The opposite of "easy listening".

Sounds like your average highly processed pop music. Don't get the hype that has lead to her farting around the planet on her private plane.

Maybe this album would be good with someone else mixing it. Unless it's meant to be a showcase for a crunchy guitar with a neighbour woman complaining about the noise next apartment over.

Thought it was a bit too esoteric to my taste at first, but the album did really grow on me. I was surprised to not be sick and tired of it after 19 tracks. Would listen again.

It's fine, I guess? I can probably understand its inclusion into the book since it seems fairly influential, but I can't really get into it. I've heard a lot more better metal music in my life.

I hold these two opinions at the same time:

1. The Dark Side of the Moon is overrated.
2. The Dark Side of the Moon is a 5/5.

It's an amazing album, but I do not understand why people rate it above The Wall, which I consider to be the great Floyd album. I'd possibly even consider Wish You Were Here to be on par with The Dark Side of the Moon.

Quite the mood whiplash since I started listening to this right after finishing my last album, The Gershwin Songbook. But other than the initial shock of switching from 1950s jazz to 1990s alternative rock, it didn't really invoke much other emotions in one way or another. Just very middle of the road alternative rock.

Absolute colossus of an album. Not gonna call it a compilation, since neither Wikipedia nor MusicBrainz considers it as one. And as far as I can tell, all of the songs were recorded in the same exact year, so that's not really "compilation" material to me.

Despite its sheer size, I quite enjoyed the listen. Never a bad moment. But the fact that it's three hours does kinda water it down, making individual tracks that much less special. It's also pretty hard to listen in one sitting. And while I did like it, it's perhaps not my favourite kind of jazz. Hence I'd still edge towards 4/5 instead of 5/5.
