This definitely has too many interludes. It slows down the pace of the album every time it gets going again. The actual songs themselves are alright, but a bit generic for the genre.

Celebrity SkinHole

Rated 8/10

I like this a lot more than the other Hole album. I feel like there was more variety and I really liked the last 4 tracks. It might lack the previous rawness but I don’t think that makes this worse.

A lot of this blended together for me. It might be shorter than Melancholy… but there weren’t any standout songs for me. I think Melancholy… benefits aesthetically as well with having the two portions that separates the songs. I don’t own this physically though so that may affect my experience with the two albums. I didn’t feel this offered me anything the other one didn’t. I also think this album cover is really ugly.

Rated 10/10

I literally listened to this one a few days before it was generated. I love this album. Most people seem to prefer Dog Man Star but this is my favourite Suede album. I’ll admit Breakdown and The Next Life are weak, but that doesn’t matter when you’ve got songs like Metal Mickey, Moving, Animal Nitrate, Pantomime Horse and Sleeping Pills. The Drowners is my absolute favourite song by them. It was their debut single and, even though they’ve made great songs afterwards, I don’t think they’ve ever topped this one.

I feel my biggest issue is that the vocals and instrumentals sometimes feel separate / not balanced right. I lose his voice a lot (my headphones are fine; it’s only an issue in some places). The songs sound nice but I think they’d benefit from slightly different mixing or a stronger singer.

Is it the horse on the cover wishing they were a singular eagle? The horses are intriguing.

Another chill album, although slightly repetitive. The final track shows there was the ability to switch things up a bit but it didn’t happen throughout the album cover. Not sure whether I love or hate the album. I wonder what the designer was thinking with that one.

You can easily relax to this, but that doesn’t mean the music lacks substance. Great album. The cover is fantastic and immediately made me more interested in what would be on this.

Because of their name and album title, I’ve been under the impression they were an electronic group, even though I knew Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci opened for their Haçienda gig and they’d be a terrible fit if Spiritualized were. I was surprised by what they actually were.

200 Bars is the only song I really liked on here and it was the last one. A lot of this goes on for way longer than it should. I kept feeling these tracks would be a cool moment in an album that doesn’t sound like this the whole way through, but when it’s the whole album it does nothing for me.

I had fun imagining what scenarios would be happening in this fictional film, but I don’t think this will be a regular for me.

Side note: this vaguely reminded me of Depeche Mode and Alan Wilder did in fact sample one of the songs on Recoil’s Bloodline. I feel slightly smart for being able to recognise a music thing like that because I usually can’t.

At the moment, the generator seems to love repeating bands within short spaces of time for me. Natty Dread was just ten albums ago. I found this one slightly more engaging, but not even enough to bump it up one star. Just don’t think I’m a fan of Bob Marley.

I’m still not fully sold on him but I definitely liked this more than the other one I had. I actually really like So Long, Marianne but it also annoys me because it shows he did have the ability to make the songs slightly more interesting instrumentally. The minimal instrumentation of most of his songs is what puts me off his work. I know the point of Leonard Cohen is the lyrics but he is releasing these as songs, not poems. There’s a debate here about what music is and what it is for but I’m not going to touch that in a 1001 albums review. This is longer than most of my reviews so maybe you can give him credit for that.
Side note on the lyrics, there is a LOT of religious imagery here. I personally don’t connect to this as much as a lot of people seem to do. I was raised in a « if you choose to follow a religion that’s fine but we’re not forcing you to » way and ended up having very little connection to any religion. As a result of that, the impact these references seem to have on people, in Cohen’s work and otherwise, gets completely lost on me, even if I understand the background and what it means.

First of all, the album cover is beautiful. The colour palette is admittedly more autumnal, but the artwork is stunning. It’s the type of cover that makes you want to like an album more than you do.

I was disappointed by this one. I was under the impression I would love Talk Talk but I didn’t get much out of this. I don’t really gel with the singer’s voice, or maybe it is how it’s overlaid with the music, and the songs themselves don’t appeal to me too much. There are some good moments but the songs drag and feel a bit dull to me. I’ve heard many positive reviews about this album but it just hasn’t connected with me the way I thought it would.

Another album on this list which is just too long for its own good. I thought I was going to love this album, but then more and more disappointing tracks showed up. The tracks I liked I really liked, but a lot of this album was a slog.
