I am immediately reminded of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. If you haven't seen the movie, it's a parody of other music movies in which a musician indulges in a life of excess, takes a lot of drugs, finds his world and relationships falling apart, and has a manic epiphany for an album. In the studio, there's his regular band who are very confused, an entire orchestra, tribal African musicians, and goats. The studio is completely full and everyone thinks Dewey's plan is insane. After many takes, Dewey says he's still not satisfied with how the song is sounding and calls for "10,000 didgeridoos!"

This album should be called 10,000 Didgeridoos. I'm not sure how you can fit so many instruments, so much production, and so many theatrical changes in an album and still have it turn out this mediocre.

There are a moments of "oh, this isn't bad," but "this isn't bad" isn't what I'm listening to 1,000+ albums to hear. I'm definitely not here for an INSANE series of non-sequiturs. It sounds like schizophrenia. "Hi, I'm Crazy Pat, and these guys are The Asylum, and we're here to play what the illuminati tells us to play"

Really enjoyable listen!

It's crazy to think about how in this imaginary dystopian future, the computers are making all the decisions, fascism is on the rise, and creativity is a waste of time because the machines do it for you. That's just like...oh.

I need to ask ChatGPT what the word for that is.

Not really sure what's special about this album. Poorly recorded, samey sounding compared to others in the genre of the time, and pretty inspiring. Inoffensive, but there was nothing here worth coming back to for me

Best I can do is ⭐⭐.51

Punk seemed to me, in most cases, just a bunch of folks playing fast and poorly. That ain't these guys AT ALL. Incredible musicianship all around (on this album of guys playing fast). And not only just "guys playing fast," but also there is real songwriting and arranging here. I'm really impressed with this.

I don't know that I could want anything more from a punk album. This is the first I have heard of this band, and I want more. I'm immediately listening a second time in a row, will add to my collection, and am 100% going to explore this band more.

Great album

I don't know if this album grew on me, or that the second half of the album was SIGNIFICANTLY better. Either way, the second half bought it an extra star from me.

The first half had me thinking "This is what Jefferson Airplane would sound like if they sucked." Fortunately, that didn't last, and when they started doing something unique to their own band, I really enjoyed it

I have never had a "favorite song." There are just too many amazing pieces of art out there, but if someone put a gun to my head today and demanded an answer, I'd feel damned comfortable screaming IN MY TIME OF DYING! IN MY TIME OF DYING!!! What a fucking masterpiece. And as the gunman with strange motivations turns to walk away, I'd probably yell "WAIT! NO! TEN YEARS GONE!" BANG! *gurgling noises* "Maybe The Wanton Song..?" Disgusted, the gunman empties his magazine and walks away

Five stars. Ten stars! A hundred stars!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pretty good! There were a couple of short, discordant passages I didn't much care for, but otherwise, quite enjoyable. I especially liked to classical guitar segments.

I also like small recording "errors" that are left in, such as someone yelling "Godamnit!" on this album

This was an interesting album. Good, unfamiliar, and varied. I think I'll add this to my collection and make another pass pretty soon. For some reason, I'm not sure if I have this album as much of my focus as I would have liked

In a rare case for me, I'm really glad the record company exerted their control over an artist. "No tthird disc to listen to" is probably the best part of this album for me. I am ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE Prince is an excellent musician; I've seen it before. Though excellent musicianship does not a good album make.

This all felt like album filler to me. Nothing stood out as exceptional, but nothing was bad either. I'm not seeing the "Prince's beat album" here at all. If anything with this overly long round-up of pretty average tracks, it's my least favorite of his.

This is a weird one. No other hip-hop album sounded like this in 1990. There were absolutely better lyrics in 1990, and maybe better beats. However, this combination of beats, samples, jokey and mostly lighthearted lyrics was an island at the time. Pretty much everything else at the time was angry, serious, graphic, and violent (with a couple exceptions from Tribe and Eric B/Rakim), so this was kind of a different animal. It's sort of a logical leap in the genre, but also a few steps in an unexpected direction. Sort of like prog-hop? There are some good flows on Packet Man, with rhyme arrangements that didn't become popular or common until a lot later. Certainly had to be influential for those who came later. For that reason, I can see its placement on a list of essentials, and I'm just as surprised to be writing this as you are to be reading it

Unless one was listening to hip-hop on a regular basis in 1991, it would be hard to explain just how different Cypress Hill was. Nobody had a flow like this. Nobody. There wasn't any other mainstream artist (other than perhaps the Beastie Boys) who's songs were so busy, varies, and full of unique samples.

This album is absolutely deserving of a spot on the 1,001 list

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Well, that was a ride.

Certainly makes sense that this album was developed after some serious psychedelic use. At various times throughout, I felt like I was having a stroke, listening to three albums, very interested, calm, or perhaps dying or already dead.

For now, ⭐⭐⭐, but I think I'll have to make another pass through this album to make a little more sense if what I heard

ATTENTION TIDAL.USERS:
The original release does not exist on Tidal as of September 2026. If you want to hear the album that was actually on the 1,001 list, you'll have to cobble together a playlist from Wikipedia's original track listing from the linked article or find it elsewhere.

Quite enjoyable, this was. As a necessity, I added it to my personal collection, as I couldn't stream it. I think I'll leave it there too. It's astonishing to me this was 1988. I see why so many of the seminal bands of MY youth claimed this as a seminal band for theirs.

I think there's some musical merit to this album, but none of it has to do with the vocal performance or lyrical content. This is a hard album to review because it's somehow catchy and pretty meh all at once. Reminds me of the meme about drinking a bunch of coffee when you didn't sleep last night: "now I'm still tired, but faster."

I honestly don't get the love for this band; they have one song with many titles. The Wikipedia article has a statement by Lemmy in an interview talking about how he was sick of playing Ace of Spades and said "we have other songs too!" No. No, you don't. theyrethesamepicture.jpeg

Other than listening to some either gross or inane lyrics, the hardest part part of this will be deciding if this album gets rounded up to 3 or down to 2. Oh, no, wait, the last two songs reminded me that I listened to the first 8 songs while I was writing this, and they were all the same. ⭐⭐.49

The vocals give me confidence. I should song in public more often. If this guy can do it unembarrassed and without irony, I can too. Is there a solid rhythm section out there willing to play awesome music behind my mediocre-at-best singing? I can ruin your shit a little less than this. Let's get it going!

For me, the instrumentation is really good on this album; the droning and hypnotic feel of it is most of what I like, but the wannabe Jim Morrison who's Ben Steining into the microphone just kills it for me. "I put my trust in you, Bueller. Bueller? My wife says about clothes that you can wear a risque top or a risque bottom, but not both at the same time. Along those lines, I think you get one kind of droning in music: vocals or instruments.

As a compliment, this music would fit perfectly into a Robert Rodriguez film.

This wasn't unlistenable, but it was unenjoyable.

I have always loved Constant Craving, so I was looking forward to that, at a minimum, on this album. I don't think I was prepared for what makes up the rest of it. There's definitely an old school crooner feel to it, though k.d. has a much sweeter tone, sadder delivery, and I think the instrumentation, arrangements, and background vocals elevate it above "just a crooner record."

Man, what a beautiful voice. And excellent production and recording. I can't think of another album right off hand that has so much atmosphere. This is going to require a second listen today, and if I can't get to it, certainly this week. And absolutely going in my collection, if it's not there already (UPDATE: it was, and I feel bad for not listening to it more)

I was going to rate this 4.49 until my second listen. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Incredible album

Conceptually, this album is excellent. I think a little was lacking in the execution with songs that were overly long or a musical idea that was left on the stove a few minutes more than it should have been. I loved the downtempo/electronic/bossa nova/vocals very much, and if the artist could have focused on that and tightened things up a bit, this might have crossed into five star territory for me. As it is, I feel like there was a lot of wasted potential on the album. I have always thought one of the most important skills an artist can have is knowing when to stop adding to a composition, and for me, Suba missed the mark, unfortunately.

At some points listening to this, I would have rated it four stars, but there were too many instances of overdoing things.

⭐⭐⭐

Awesome guitar riffs, fat, juicy bass, incredible vocals from Serj, technical drumming that compliments rather than distracts, driving and infectious overall, with socially aware lyrics. And in lyrics, it's pretty rare to have top-of-mix metal vocals and that they're completely intelligible. It's hard to ask for more out of an album.

Combining the styles they do absolutely should not work on paper, but SoaD's style make some of the most interesting and catchy recordings I have heard from the time this album came out until now.

Today is a momentous day! The absolute and definitive last time I'll ever listen to Leonard Cohen in my life! I can't believe this day has come at last! 4 albums on the list. That's ridiculous.

I'm one of those people with the gene that makes Leonard Cohen taste like soap. Still, I give every album as open-minded and objective listen as I possibly can. This one, for me, is his most palatable work. There were actually places on this album that were actually enjoyable, which is first for me with this artist. Usually, I find him completely intolerable.

Uh, kinda weird, but not bad. I see this more of audible art than I do music. Music is art, of course, but this is art that's in music form? Something like that. When I go to modern art exhibits, this sound is often what the artwork looks like. I'm rambling and incoherent, searching for the right words and just cannot get close.

Anyway, ⭐⭐⭐, glad I listened, won't listen again
