Same year and same producer as Back to Back.

For the frist half before ALL the filler - Take back to black, take out the actual instrumentation and just some early aughts drum beats - look honestly, it isnt as bad as i thought it would be. I actually kinda enjoyed it.

But it is WAY to long and then the second half is so lazy, so self indulgent and so much filler.

Mega mega mega hit aside…

A. Damn does Niles bass bounce.
B. Hoping now that we are at a very different cultural moment this list can give discos revolutionary social/cultural impact some respect. Not a bad place to start imo.

Won’t return to it but can appreciate the technical complexity. Just not my thing.

The layers and technical aspects could earn it a 3 even if my level of return to it would be a 1.5.

Not sure why I hadn’t dived into ELO before this.

If all prog were this fun or adjacent to this, it’d be a much better genre. This was oddly fun.

Sweeping orchestrations, broad ballads, catchy synth hooks, and prog-adjacent hits packed into 3.5-minute songs.

There is not a weak moment or note..uplifting and fun, weird and ahead of its time, so 70s and so timeless.

Find me another album that so perfectly sums up the "70's classic rock sound"..i'll wait.

RIP Shane MacGowan.

From the most beautiful Christmas song ever written to an album that spawned a genre and a million bands to follow.

There is/was nothing like the Pouges!

I don’t know how you can find a weak spot or complain about a second of this album.

Whooa Nelly do those horns cut right through your soul.

I have such a hard time with the Soul Falsetto and wish the smalltz-y ness of it wasnt there so i could actually focus on and appreaicte the lyrics. I've had some really challening albums recently, that need more than 1 listen and this one is no exception.

Is it a 3? Is it a 4? For the cover alone it gets a 4.

Rated 6/10

First, I love Lou Reeds music and many of his albums are so special - so I give him more benefit.

His Dylan esque voice and literal lyricism is not for everyone- but what he is able to do here. To tell a story, one that he is meant to tell and in a way so uniquely him while also some experimentation. Is pretty special- and yet it’s not cohesive and feels a little…out of frame.

This one will need more time and repeat listens- to high cause I’m biased or right? Idk yet.

Some all out funky classics and a BUNCH of sappy first wedding dances.

But the ending and the hits are so good. This is a 3.5 at the end of the day.

Ohh early Beatles…idk.

First half sounds like a 12 yr old learning to play guitar writing songs about his crush in math class.

2nd sounds like a rock and roll band still finding their footing but with potential. It was still at marketing at this point to me - i'll be over here listening to Ray Davies.
