3+3The Isley Brothers

Rated 10/10

Man, what a stacked album! I had heard of the Isley Brothers before, but couldn't name a track from them... turns out most of the tracks on this album I've heard sampled in electronic or hip-hop albums before. Incredible stuff. The whole album is really good, but then there's absolute bangers like That Lady, Summer Breeze, and Highway of My Life.

NevermindNirvana

Rated 8/10

Great album. Stronger first half than second, imo. I always thought In Utero was the better Nirvana album, but again this one is still great and I don't begrudge it on this list especially considering its significance.

I don't love it. I remember hearing "Bound 2" on the radio and thinking, nah, and just never bothering. But past me was wrong on writing the whole thing off.

There's some really, really solid stuff here. "Hold My Liquor" is amazing. And, well, I really love "Bound 2" now, haha.

I am not a fan of experimental electronic Kanye, though. Never was a fan of 808s and Heartbreaks. For me, this is alright.

AqualungJethro Tull

It's pretty decent. I've had it way too hyped up for me over the years as this perfect album and... it's fine? Some of the reviews about people loving the flute or people hating the flute are funny. The flute is fine. It's not make or break for me, it's just... there.

Not really for me. I appreciate learning about how Ackles was super influential to artists like Elton John and Phil Collins, and that after "American Gothic" came out he felt he couldn't top it and just kind of... stopped.

Very melancholy. Bittersweet. Would probably make a great biopic.

Musically, though, not for me. Album makes for a better story than listen.

The DoorsThe Doors

Rated 8/10

I've always found The Doors to be an inconsistent listen... I either love it or hate it. That said, this is probably their most consistently enjoyable album. Opens strong, middle kind of ebbs and flows, then ends with probably their best track.

Never been a big Dire Straits fan. Now, I'll admit "Money For Nothing" is a fantastic track. Also, "Walk of Life" is catchy as hell. I don't really vibe with anything else, though. Rest of the album is a bit of a soft-rock snoozefest.

Middling alt rock. I liked a few tracks, like "Vastopol" and "Some Things" and "Understanding". Very lo-fi, but not necessarily in a good way. Bits of it just sound like some guys fucking around, like there are two minute-long interludes of the drummer just faffing about like at a garage practice.

The guitars are pretty good, but the album is weirdly forgettable.

Solid album. I only knew "I'll Believe In A Thing Called Love" before this, and that track rules. I'm not the biggest hair metal guy, so I'm not really the target audience, but have to say, was fairly enjoyable.

"Growing On Me" and "Friday Night" were other standout tracks.

I absolutely hated this album when it first came out. Couldn't stand it. Just annoyed the hell out of me and I bounced right off.

Coming back to it years later, I'll admit, it's grown on me somewhat. There are a bunch of songs that still annoy me to listen to, sounding twee Charlie Brown's Christmas outtakes, but there are a number I quite liked. "Jacksonville" admittedly is a real banger. I also liked "Decatur, or, Round of Applause for your Step-Mother!" and "Casimir Pulaski Day".

Pretty decent, I'll say, but an uneven listen for sure.

Ah, man, this is absolutely my jam. I would've eaten this kind of post-rock album up as a teen. I've known of Tortoise for years and years and just never gotten around to playing them. Like I say, though, absolutely my jam. This album is brilliant.

This is alright. Couple of tracks really grate on me, but there's a bunch of here that are real solid. "Learned it", "Satin Down"... solid songs. I think it has a stronger middle, starts a bit weak and ends a bit weak.

Decent, though.

I only know a few of Neil Young's albums (Harvest, After the Gold Rush, and Deja Vu as CSNY), but what I've heard of him I really like. He's my kind of melancholy folk music.

This one is another win for me. So far Young has not missed. He's prolific, though, so I'm sure there's some albums I'll dislike This ain't one. Consistently enjoyable throughout.

Not really my kind of music. This is the kind of stuff my aunt and uncles loved to listen to at family gatherings, Parsons and Emmylou Harris and the like. Not for me.

"Love Hurts" is fantastic, but I don't care for the rest of it. The rest just kind of blends together for me.

I'm not the biggest Smiths fan. I like singles of theirs, but I've never found a whole album that resonates with me. I'd rather have a "best of".

"There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" is a brilliant track and there are a few other tracks that I quite dig. Bunch of stuff on here is forgettable.

Yeah. As an album, it's alright.

Surprisingly good album. I had never heard of this guy and the album cover is just some dude in a robe with a pipe... but damn, the dude can write a song. Just consistently well crafted, earnest pop music throughout.

As it turns out I did know "Coconut" but just never knew who Nilsson was. Probably a bunch of other songs of his I know but am unaware are his... I'm reminded of Beatles or Beach Boys tracks in part.

Again, really satisfying album.

I dig it. I absolutely would've listened to this in my teenage hipster years. Perhaps isn't hitting as hard with me right now, but I thoroughly enjoy this. Adding it to my regular music rotation.

Enjoying hearing all the originals tracks MF DOOM sampled, ha. Side one is easily my favourite. Side two was a little more mixed. I could do with the longer tracks being cut down more, and looking at the information for this one it seems they were indeed cut down for singles.
