This album is wild. He is clearly looking for a style and is casting a huge net to find it. There are so many references and themes. Most of them not great. but it's wild to see how he is almost at a loss for what to do. There is only one song on So that is this tentative, but this whole album is like that. I was never a big fan of this album and now I know why. I love the way he is working through his style in this, but I prefer when he finally comes to a conclusion. I wonder how many other musicians could exist if they were given this chance to work through 3 albums before landing on something truly epic. That being said Games without frontiers is insanely good.

I think I'm finally cured of labeling me as indy. There's a reason pop music is popular, and this isn't it. Not the worst, but it sure is boring.

The older I get the more ok I am with this band. I do not like David Byrne and I don't think any of this music is particularly groundbreaking. But it's better than not bad. I'd say if I didn't know anything about this band I'd say it's good. 3 I guess.

I remember reading somewhere that the Violent Femmes couldn't get any gigs in the midwest in the late 70's because the scene was just full of pretensions post punks. and I didn't realize this was the garbage they were talking about. absolute garbage pretending to be "smart"

Fuck. The music and the production is incredible. Second to none. When All of the lights come on i get chills. MOST of the people he got to work on this were incredibly smart and added so much to this. Rihanna, Bon Iver. fucking nicki minaj. Don't even get me started. The rapping is absolutely dog shit. the lyrics are hard to listen to even without the foresight of 2026. The humor is completely gone, but he still delivers it like he is funny. but the worst is I hate this. I hate what has become of this legacy. I hate how much of a complete ass he is here and I hate how he became so so much worse. I just listen to this and think what his mother would have thought of all of this.

It just makes me mad I can't listen to this anymore, and I am mad that this list made me listen to it again.

Honestly, better than I imagined. really tight. There's a mastery of the music that borders on farce? We are so good lets play these songs as a laugh. I just listened to the Kinks and I think they are both way overqualified for the music they play and they both have a similar feel, where the kinks play it in earnest perfecting the pop tune, this album is I got drunk one night and played this for a laugh for my friends.

This was better than I thought it would be. The first song was what I think when I hear Traffic, but the next few songs were suprising. I didn't realize these were british progressive guys and not a part of the yacht rock soft jazz. I don't think its really something I would listen to, but I won't shudder every time I hear this bands name anymore.

It's not riot grrl it's not nu metal. And yet they are trying to be both? Their pop harmonies are nice but it just feels a bit dated for 2003. Breeders came on right after this album and it was so much better I knew instantly the album was over. Not great.

It's good. All I can think of is Wes Anderson though, even though I don't think he used any of these songs specifically. very british.

I was way more interested in the kid A as an album not really this, and I think listening now I think I know why. There is a lot going on about alienation and a sense of not fitting in, but the songs are all roughly acoustic based. the acoustic guitar, the piano, even a lot of the singing is accapella (sp?). I don't think I was receptive to the music, and now it feels so traditionally a "band" with some wall of sound to fill in. I don't know what I'm sayig. I feel like Kid A was way more revolutionary than this album, I think depeche mode introduced sinister moods of guitar and synth better and more interesting than this, and I think Smashing Pumpkins Adore which was releases a year(?) later was more interesting with beats and technology with acoustic baking. I love Radiohead, don't get me wrong, but this feels like they were very much in process with this album.

Much better than I was expecting. Who names their band Elbow and expects it to sound good? what a terrible name.

This album is all over the place in a good way. Everytime I think damn this is a good song, it's written by Linda Perry. She is a chameleon too. The bad songs are really bad, but the good songs are incredible. Her voice is amazing. how was she lumped in with Britney? they are two separate animals.

I see why they went a slightly different route after this one. It feels a bit forced by round 3 and they are really stretching those last few songs to get in a whole album. Concept became a nice way to redefine this band. It's ok. Fun but a bit forced. That first song fucking rules though.

My God does she have a great voice. her sound is so pure and unrelenting. She could sing ANYTHING and it would sound amazing. why country and then easy listening? I don't know. Just listened to a christina aguilera album and she could have EASILY sang it better. just makes this music so much better.

It's just so desperate. I don't know if the 70's just wanted to be so uncool that they were in fact cool? It just comes off a sleezy. I will never understand steely Dan.
