Sea ChangeBeck

Rated 6/10

I wouldn't be a good friend to Beck Because I'm really not interested in listening to sad Beck. I'm sorry Beck. How about I give you three stars instead of two? Would that cheer you up at all?

I have a feeling that if I understood the lyrics I wouldn't like this. But I really enjoy the droning beats and singing. It's not something I'm going to sit down and listen to, but it makes pretty excellent background music.

Apparently time travel is real. Because I just spent 36 minutes being 17 years old again. My haircut was pretty stupid, but damn that was a sweet leather jacket. I think I may go do another 36.

I want to like this more than I actually do. Its no surprise that the piano ballads are the biggest hits. That's where John is at his best, showing heartbreaking emotion. But when he does his "American" thing (country and blues) it just doesn't work.

So good! Bass and drums are real standouts, but all of it really fits together seamlessly. One of the highlights if 1980.

I remember the exact time and place that I first heard this album. I was living on a small island in New England. It was September, cold, and rainy. All the summer tourists and workers had left. I had nowhere to be, so I stayed on the island for the fall surf. I was sitting in my truck watching massive, messy waves pound the shore. I noticed that a friend had left his case of cassettes behind the seat. I rifled through it to find something interesting and came across this album. I'm pretty sure I cried a few times on that first listen. It's still one of my all time favorites.

Iconic? Yes. Influencial? Absolutely. Listenable? Not so much.

I'm a simple person. I work hard all day, I'm not that interested in having to work hard to 'enjoy' something in my free time. I like paintings that look like something I recognize. I like drinks that taste good on the first sip. And I like music that sounds like all of the musicians are in agreement about what song they are playing. Maybe someday I'll be retired with so much free time and boredom that I can really dedicate myself to being cool enough to"getting it". Although, being dead seems easier.
