The lyrics are so unintentionally funny, but damn it if she doesn't have a great voice. I also couldn't help comparing this to Adele while listening. Whereas Adele relies entirely on her voice, with the instrumentation and melodies as afterthoughts, Mariah Carey goes to a little effort to develop music with a focus on melody. Imagine my surprise to see the average rating on this album be more than an entire star lower than the Adele albums on this list. It must be because of the lyrics, but doesn't make much sense. That said, this is a little long and certainly too syrupy for sustained enjoyment.

Holy crap is this bad. Why did they feel the need to make a country album? Their other stuff is so good, but this is derivative, hokey, and cringey.

1.0/5.0: Embarrassing

This shouldn't be getting the hate it has here on this website. The music is so strange and unpredictable - very out-of-left-field for the late 90s. The instrumentation and harmonies are great, and the production is top notch. Finally, some of the criticisms of the lyrics are hilarious because most of the time the lyrics are tongue in cheek or intentionally obtuse.

4.5/5.0: Excellent

Wow, I was not expecting this to be that good. And the cover of In a Gadda Da Vida is far better than the original (which is pretty good itself).

4.5/5.0: Excellent

In the past I was never a big fan of NIN, mainly because I preferred heavier music, but in a vacuum this is an incredible album. The creativity and production are off the charts. It's grating and very dark without ever losing a sense of melody, and this album was also super innovative and influential.

Rated 6/10

This was a good album. I can definitely hear how influential this was, but ultimately it's a tad boring.

3.0/5.0: Good

This is a good album, even a very good album at times, but a lot of it is very safe paint-by-numbers pop. It's not challenging and it wasn't particularly innovative, both of which I think should be imperative for the highest rated album on this site. Finally, the last two tracks are significantly worse than the rest of the record, so the album loses half a star.

AqualungJethro Tull

Rated 10/10

Such an incredible album. Heavy riffs, old-school rock ‘n’ roll, peaceful folk, Jazz bits, alternately thoughtful and biting lyrics, and of course, Ian’s inimitable flute. Every time I come back to this album it’s better than the last time (the Steven Wilson remix is superb). Just another great album from a band that has a lot of them.

Some really great songs on here, but the opening track and "If You Think You're Lonely Now" are really bad. Difficult to see why the latter was a hit. The closing track is also annoying. However, the other five tracks range from fantastic to listenable, and the album is only 40 minutes.
