Sounds like if Nick Drake and The Beach Boys had a Brazillian baby.

Honestly prefer the more folky, Nick Drake stuff, but still a great record. Think only my second Latin record to get a 4*. Everything else pretty much gets a 3* because its vibe music for me and not listening music. But this one is great.

Quiet LifeJapan

Rated 8/10

Weird start with this one. I somehow expected glam/hair metal with this album, but am getting Duran Duran if they were post-punk/goth.

But then looking up Japan, find out they actually WERE glam prior to this album. I have no clue if I actually heard they were glam at some point, or if I just pulled that out of my ass, but whatever, haha.

But yeah. Duran Duran if they were post-punk/goth is a good description. Maybe with a little Stewart Copeland Spyro soundtrack thrown in as well.

Really digging the dark vibe of this album. It's goth without really being goth. And I think this has got to be up there as one of the most criminally underrated albums on the list. 2.86? Should honestly be at least 3.2. And I'm not even giving it a 5*. It's just such a good album and I struggle to figure out how such an inoffensively good album gets something that low.

For such a long album, I really don't have much to say. It's good, fun "little" thing. A lot of stuff that kinda falls along the same lines, and for such a long album, it's not a super compelling thing.

But it's cute, fun, and pretty inoffensive. But nothing that's really speaking to me.

Millennial hipster bullshit. Honestly, had I listened to this back around when it released, I'd have probably been really into it.

But listening for the first time now, it's perfectly fine. Nothing that blows my mind, but not really speaking to me either.

See, this is the type of hardcore punk that I can get into. Hardcore where its not just basic-ass hardcore. The blending of genres here while retaining the drive, muscularity, and aggression of hardcore.

Similar to Dead Kennedys where they mixed surf rock with hardcore, you're getting funk, soul, reggae, and metal here (particularly glam metal, like Van Halen, which adds an interesting contrast to the punk/darker vibes of the music).

Also, the instrumentation is a notch above a lot of other hardcore, and the vocals more interesting than just punk shouts.

Definitely feeling their influence on stuff like Faith No More and whatnot.

Didn't go into this expecting to like this as much as I do, but happy I do.

Oh man, wasn't expecting proto-riot grrrl circa 1978. A lot of this sounds straight out of the Bikini Kill/Sleater-Kinney playbook to the point where a couple of the songs could slot into an SK album, and you wouldn't notice except for the saxophone and lack of vibrato.

Really good stuff though. I do prefer Sleater-Kinney for their more modern sound, but yeah.

Surprised by this one.
While definitely more on the old-school side of things, the flows are generally so fast that they don't come off as stilted or dated.

And the music, while having this alternative/jazz style, also has this kinda carnival vibe to it that I really enjoy. Soul Flower is a great track.

Probably the best "old school" style hip hop album I've come across on the list not made by Tribe.

Was actually kinda looking forward to listening to this one, given the genres (Folk, heartland rock, etc.), but unfortunately it ended up being a little too rootsy for my tastes, I guess?

I don't know a better way to describe it, but I'm just not feeling it. Fine album, not really doing anything bad, but yeah.

HomeworkDaft Punk

Rated 6/10

Honestly don't got too much to say about this. As much as I like some of Daft Punk's later stuff (And even Around the World), I'm just not an EDM person. It doesn't really do much for me.

Perfectly fine, but not wowing me.

One of those albums where saying pretty much anything will be beating a dead horse that's already been beaten mercilessly for 56 years, and it's already decomposed and people are continuing to beat the ground beneath it regardless.

While it's not my favorite Pink Floyd album (I prefer Animals and Wish You Were Here), it's still a flawless album that is honestly pretty unique sounding. Whereas later albums are more focused on tighter tracks, Dark Side of the Moon breathes and vibes a lot more. Take a song like The Great Gig in the Sky (Honestly might be my favorite song on the album). That's just vibes and passion throughout.

And yeah, while it's not my favorite Pink Floyd album, unless you just flat out don't like Pink Floyd (Which I'll begrudgingly give some leeway on), anyone who sits there and claims this is an overrated album (especially in relation to their other albums) is trying way too fucking hard, and needs to be trying harder (Similar to hating on Nevermind by Nirvana. In Utero is the better album IMO, but Nevermind is still fucking amazing). This is a transcendentally amazing album, and so ubiquitous to the modern music landscape that claiming otherwise is just outright stupidity.

Don't really got much to say other than that, and I guess this is my contribution to beating the ground beneath that dead horse. Just a perfect album.

NowhereRide

Rated 8/10

First song or two was not really impressing me much, but once it got into the meat of the album, it was much better.
Some songs come off as if psychedelic Beatles had the harmonies of Alice in Chains. Some songs come off as a rockier slowdive.

Was one of the remaining albums that I was most interesting in listening to, and am pleasantly happy with how it is. Just a really good album.

Still think slowdive's Souvlaki is better (And it's a travesty that it isn't on the list), but yeah.

Rated 8/10

Honestly, this album has aged a little bit from what I remembered. Fantastic album, but yeah.

Oye Como Va, Black Magic Woman, Incident at Neshabur. Fucking amazing shit. Sometimes ends up in a slight blues rock area that I'm kinda burnt out on, but his guitar playing is always transcendent. Great stuff.

SkylarkingXTC

Rated 4/10

I really didn't like Apple Venus Vol. 1, but was looking forward to this one because I had a few friends really hyping it up.

But yeah, it's just not for me. I will say better than Apple Venus. 1000 Umbrellas and The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul are decent enough. I can do experimental music. I can do happy music. Happy experimental music though I can't do. Because it always sounds like music for children or something to me. Like it belongs in some sort of kids show or movie. I don't know why it sounds like that to me, but it does.

So yeah. Didn't really like it. Better than Apple Venus, but not enough to get more than a 2.

Weird one for me. The whole album's really good, but I only really like the first few tracks? Despite the music all sounding pretty different song to song, it does weirdly blend together in vibe.

Its a little too smooth. I like my hip hop with more grit. Might be a grower though.

But yeah. Good album. Cool to hear Q-Tip evolve his flow from those early Tribe albums where he had a more old school style.

ParachutesColdplay

Rated 6/10

I'm starting to realize Coldplay is pretty good with this project.
But this album has pros and cons vs Rush of Blood to the Head.

This album is definitely a little more consistent tone wise compared to Rush of Blood to the Head, but that also means that it's quite one note. And definitely more heavily influenced by Radiohead's OK Computer compared to later stuff.
I do prefer Rush over this, but it's still solid.

Spies is by far the best track on the album.

Guess my 5-streak of banger albums had to end at some point.

This seems like fairly inoffensive indie pop-folk/psych folk. Although the excessive vibrato he puts on can get annoying.

Also, sometimes seems like he just runs out of lyrics/ideas like on Poughkeepsie where he spends like 5 seconds just saying "buhbuhbuhbuhbuh" repeatedly, and on other songs that are only like a minute long.

Definitely Walking Dead-core. In that I mean, it sounds like music that they'd pick for the closing track for a Walking Dead episode or trailer. But I definitely liked Walking Dead-core artists like Wye Oak, Jose Gonzalez, Gustavo Santollala (Last of Us), and Sharon Van Etten more.

Decent album. May have heard This is the Way and Insect Eyes before, but don't know if I'd put it on the list.

Ok, really liking the experimentation going on in this one. I think I'm still more of a Coltrane fan, but this an Sketches of Spain are my favorite Miles records.

Kind of has an uneasy, dark vibe to it that I'm digging. Definitely on the long side, but doesn't drag. Overall, great record.

Kid ARadiohead

Rated 10/10

I challenge you to name a song that sounds more like the album cover looks than Idioteque does for Kid A. It's a perfect representation. Like Tron meets The Left Hand of Darkness.

Anyways, yeah. In Rainbows but better (which is insane because In Rainbows is a 5/5 as well). Radiohead is just great. Even when they're not, it's still really good (I still like King of Limbs quite a bit, although not huge on Moon Shaped Pool).

And this album is one of the greatest, also insane to say because OK Computer is *better* somehow. Songs like Everything in its Right Place, The National Anthem, How to Disappear Completely, In Limbo, (my personal favorite) Idioteque, and Morning Bell are transcendent. I mean, that's basically the entire tracklist, but there's a reason this is a perfect record.

Also, first album that I owned on vinyl prior to generating it (I have a handful of other records on the list, but got them after having already generated them), so gonna have to spin it today.

Regardless, fucking amazing album, and easily one of the best on the entire 1001.
