Eh, it's ok, not really my thing

Love me some Bruce! He was one of the first older legacy artists I felt compelled to check out. Maybe that's why I've developed a bit of an emotional attachment to his music, and he was also one of the first times classic dad rock captured my attention, both in sound and lyrics. This one is more solemn than an album like "Born to Run", but still a goodie!

Having spent an exchange year in New Jersey, I cannot help but feel personally identified by the Boss' discography. On such a note, this record resonates with me beyond the music in a very tangible way, and despite not being his most noteworthy collection of songs, it does really make for a great listening experience.

With this list being my first time listening to any Springsteen albums, I've got to say I found this one a lot more enjoyable than Born in the USA and Nebraska. It felt a lot more varied musically, and I certainly liked the energy here a lot more than on Nebraska. Way catchier, but still with a bit of an edge to it. 3.5 out of 5 for me.

Favourite tracks: Adam Raised a Cain, Candy's Room, Streets of Fire

It's mostly strong but the hard rock stuff is not good at all, sorry Bruce

My brother's relationship with The Beatles is that they do not particularly emotionally resonate with him but that he enjoys listening to them through other people, enjoying how much they mean to those around him. I'm sadly the same with Bruce Springsteen. I've certainly had enough exposure to be able to say I've given him a good try, my friends and family love the guy, but sadly I can't get his music to resonate with me in the way it does with others, though I do like it.

It’s a terrible thing to say, but I actually prefer Brandon Flowers doing a Bruce Springsteen impression!

Bruce! Where have you been all my life? ٩(♡ε♡ )۶

Pre Listen:
Bruce Springsteen is a name I'm familiar with, but couldn't name a song by off the top of my. I don't even know what genre the guy's known for. No expectations, outside of after this album I'll know if I like or dislike Bruce.

Notable Tracks:
Badlands - I think I've heard this before? Hard to say, it might just be it sounds a little generic?

Post Listen:
This album transitioned into background music like no other since I reviewed "The Band". Hell, even when I went back to try and re-listen to some songs, I couldn't focus on it because my brain autopiloted so quickly subconsciously.

It's not bad, it just feels so generic to me? Complete and utter background music. Bruce's voice, and all of his bandmates play professionally and smooth, but I can't get in to it at all. It's just music, nothing more. Better than just noise, better than music done poorly, but absolutely nothing stand-out I can really identify. No single instrument, no lyrics, no moment of greatness. It's just...alright.

I should've known this album would be boring, since the album cover is one of the more boring ones I've seen on here. 3/5

Only starting to listen to Boss late in the afternoon today - a massive stress at work and loads of issues, sorry Mr. Boss! I guess I could go for 4, but seems a bit too generous, what I can remember from this album is only the opener and the closer tracks! Everything else blanked for me in between, so I will relisten another time before reaching my final verdict, but I do love a bit of Boss, this is very enjoyable indeed.

Not the album to get into Bruce

Candy’s Room is excellent. I also really liked Promised Land and the title track. Nothing bad to say about this one, it’s a great album!

Rated 8/10

A great record. "The Promised Land" is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. There are a lot of fives in Bruce's catalog but this one just misses.

Rated 6/10

A bit disappointing. Not necessarily bad, but it’s kind of mythologized as a great album, and nothing really stuck out to me. Part of it is that it very much signals to a lifestyle that I’ve never known, but also because that lifestyle is one I’ve always seen through. It’s the lifestyle that is much more accurately portrayed, in my opinion, on MJ Lenderman’s landmark 2024 album Manning Fireworks, which tells various stories of various people (or one person, idk actually), all being jerks, fuck-ups, just lonely lonely men in the rural areas of America. It’s a fantastic album that portrays depression, loneliness, boredness, and how crushing all that can be in a really incredible way. And that is what I see when I look at a story like that of “Racing in the Street,” or “Factory.” It’s a glorification of a lifestyle and life that generally doesn’t deserve that, at least that kind of blind portrayal of complete beauty. It needs nuance. This album needs nuance and more interesting songs.

Gode på hver sine måter, men begge er back to basics-plater.

Oppbyggingen på "Darkness on the Edge of Town" gir gåsehud når det virkelig kommer fram.

Herlig gjenhør.

surprisingly liked it, healed some kibd of unrealized grudge i had against him
