The Stones are best when doing their own thing and not trying to sound like someone else. Here, you have essentially two songs where they sound like themselves, and we all know which two those are.

Advice: Mick, you're MICK FOOKIN' JAGGER you don't have to try to sound like Bobby Dylan or Muddy Waters. If I wanted to hear those guys I would go listen to them. Keef, wake up, tune up, find a lane. Again, when you do your thing, it's genius. Charlie Watts, just keep doing what you're doing - this album needs more drums. Bill Wyman good luck in your future endeavors, no notes. Nicky Hopkins, good job, calm down a wee bit please. Thanks.

Great. Rolling Stones again. Two of my favorite songs are on the album. Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. I really enjoyed listening to the album.

It's full of quality as you'd expect and well put together, but it doesn't have a lot of stand-out tracks. A number of the tracks I wasn't particularly taken with, especially those that lean towards country.

3.5 rounded down.

"Street Fighting Man" and "Sympathy For The Devil" aren't enough to lift this mediocre Stones album up to the pantheon of later releases. Brian Jones would be cycled out before his unfortunate death, so in many ways it's the end of one era and the start on a new...

The Rolling Stones weren't really built for that 1960s six month album cycle thing were they? Two moments of real inspiration, a bunch of competent stuff with some interesting moments and one awful blues cover they grubbily passed off as their own. It could be a 3 on another day but you have to factor in the Jagger tax.

Rated 4/10

Did they only sell their soul for singles? Why is the rest of this album so terrible yet still come up with sympathy for the devil??

Rated 10/10

The Stones’ best album. Heard it 100 times.

Least favourite songs: Dear Doctor

Another disappointing dad rock album. There was virtually no distinction between songs and the album sequencing was subpar. Sympathy for the Devil was obviously the big hit here then the band were comfortable filling the remainder of the album with sun-baked southern guitar and uninteresting content. It wasn't offensive but really not for me. 2/5.

Sympathy for the Devil set a major tone for a completely different sounding album. I was expecting a sort of big heavy rock album, and instead, I kinda got a sort of pseudo country album mixed with some other flavors and rock stylings, but it’s an album I’m totally down with.

I’ve never listened to a full Rolling Stones album before this, but I thought the production here was incredibly good, and even though it didn’t retain the same energy that Sympathy for the Devil kicked off with, the sort of country/folksy/blues sensibilities that wash over the rest of the album just fit really nicely for me, and I liked it a lot.

It’s a strong 4; certainly worth a listen, and I’m sure that the tracks I wasn’t fully vibing with might be someone else’s favorite; that’s a testament to the pretty good variance in this album.

I just find The Rolling Stones so mediocre, and this album is no exception. Even its best song, “Sympathy for the Devil,” drags on way too long. I’ll never understand why they are so well regarded… to some degree, I feel like I’m missing out on something…

Truly one of the most baffling "superstar" bands of all time. For example, I don't like Bruce Springsteen, but the *music* on his albums is dynamite. His voice is shit, but lyrically, at the very least, the man tells an excellent story.

The Rolling Stones? Jagger's voice is awful. The music is bog standard basic "rock" at best, and cookie-cutter, cliche "bluesy" at worst. I just do not see the appeal in this band - at all.

Now onto the actual album review.

Sympathy for the Devil. That song slaps. I might like it because it's in the final scene of Interview With a Vampire, and I absolutely loved that movie when I was a kid.

Street Fighting Man is a halfway decent 60s rock song. Not great, but better than what I've come to expect from the Stones.

Prodigal Son is *actual* blues! Jagger does something with his voice that sounds different than usual, but fits perfectly as a blues song.

Stray Cat Blues - not bluesy at all, but another pretty solid 60s rock jam. Better than Street Fighting Man, and I'd actually go so far as to call it good.

And that's it. The rest of the album is filler trash. I'll give it 2 stars because there are two, possibly 3 good songs, and one song that doesn't suck.

After realizing they're crap at psychadelia, this is the start of the best era of the Rolling Stones, initiating a 5-album cycle of country and gospel inflected blues rock. Sure, it's wierd British guys doing Americana cosplay, but they're better at it than any of their US contemporaries and nowhere near as gross as other English bands doing it. It's loose and free and fun throughout so much so that they even pull off a non-annoying honky tonk piano. The lead guitar work is dead simple and perflectly effective with a nasty snarling tone and quicky dirty bursts. The bass likewise is just right, dropping little fills and chord tones to propel it forward and tie it togther harmonically. None of these are my favorite RS songs, but the album as a whole is so consistent and coherent sonically and thematically.

Favorites: No expectations, Sympathy for the Devil, Salt of the Earth

Rated 10/10

Haven't been a fan of any of their albums so far but this was really enjoyable pretty much all the way through. Loved the Bob Dylan-esque song without the annoying voice of Bob Dylan

Was gonna start with a 3 but I think I'll need to give a 4 to a Stones album when I'm done with all six and it's probably gonna be this one so

Rated 8/10

I think this has been my favorite of The Rolling Stones I've listened to so far. Some really good songs, lots of great slide guitar work. I'll listen to this one again over the other's I've heard.

Rated 6/10

I mean sympathy for the devil and street fighting man. classic stones. but some of their songs (salt of the earth) I'm not a fan of.

Rated 10/10

2 of my favourite songs ever. 5 stars.

Rated 6/10

Iconic sound to usher in the legendary 70s rock n roll scene. Sympathy for the devil has unlimited replay potential, great song that people will recognize but aren't sick of. Nice crunchy guitar thoughout the album, twangy bass with a nice low-end, iconic vocals, and punchy drums! The sound gets a little bit repetitive with the slide guitar sound. Lead guitar can get a little bit too heady. Stand-out songs: Sympathy for the devil (T1), No Expectations (T2), Stray Cat Blues (T8). A good album for both the oldheads and younger listeners, super listenable, and not too demanding. I did find myself wanting it to end by the last track, despite being ~40mins. Really middle-of-the-road album for me, 2.57/5

Rated 6/10

I have not listened to this album before, and was only familiar with the two hits (Sympathy, Street Fighting Man). Of the lesser known songs, they range from Dear Doctor, which is pretty poor, to Stray Cat Blues, which I liked quite a lot. Jigsaw Puzzle is basically Sympathy for the Devil over again but less interesting. Overall, this is fine, but not something I'd choose to listen to.
