'And it don't bleed / And it don't breathe / It's locked its jaws / And now it's swallowing.' Grungy tho not exactly grunge, Gentlemen is a visceral and sensible breakup record: 'Ladies, let me tell you about myself / I got a dick for a brain / And my brain is gonna sell my ass to you.' The concept album, w/ an uncomplicated notion at its core, does a lot in the way of supporting the cause for good songwriting, b/c that's ultimately what steals the show. It's not Greg Dulli's voice - not dull but not particularly notable either - or the intensity of the instrumentation. It's not even the lyrics necessarily, tho there are moments that have their shine. It's the structure and the flow, it's the abstract gestalt that somehow delivers something concrete in the end.

Afghan Whigs...a band I have always felt like I should like more. Maybe it is because I didn't get in to them at the time? It is ok, but nothing that seems it would have even worked with me back in the mid-90s. 3.5/5

Better tgan Coldplay
Rated 8/10
I had heard of the band before without ever listening to them. It took me a couple of tracks to get into it but when it clicked with me I ended up really enjoying it. I definitely think it’s going to be a grower so could easily go up a star when I do my second listen later.
Top Track - Debonair but I also really liked Brother Woodrow/Closing Prayer
Rated 8/10
Gentlemen was a great album. I always do enjoy a good alt rock album as it is one of my favorite genres due to having an easy to get into, hard to get off of kind of sound i always enjoy. This album definitely has that sound to a T. The musicianship may be a bit awkward at points but for the most part it is very great with the guitars being the main star of the show here. I have heard not great things about the singers voice but while it does take some getting used to, he does have a pretty good voice. The lyrics are probably the weakest part about this album as they could be pretty dumb but still tolerable. I still really liked this album quite a lot mostly for the musicianship.
Best Song: Debonair
Worst Song: When We Two Parted

It took me a long time to come around to liking the Afghan Whigs but now I’m all in. The record is wonderful.
Rated 4/10
It was ok, but the singer's voice bothers me.
Rated 4/10
It always excites me to find some 90s alt-rock that I wasn't already familiar with.
It also always bums me out when it ends up being pretty uninteresting to listen to.
Rated 4/10
Bastante aburrido en general, pese a tener cositas en algunas canciones no me ha hecho especial gracia.
Canción destacada: Gentlemen
Rated 4/10
God what a slog. Instrumentally good but fuck that boring ass vocalist
Rated 6/10
the guy's voice is a lot. second half-ish of the album was more interesting.
thought the album cover was a laugh at first (see: nan and brian in bed), but it provides context for one of the album's themes: just kids dealing with some grown-ass business.
Rated 8/10
I was about 5 years too young for this at the time, which is a shame. 90s US alt-rock, from a point in time where the UK was just about to fall out of love with American artists for a while.
Rated 2/10
I honestly don't know if I've ever heard a more annoying and whiny album. The music is utterly predictable, throwing every well-worn post-punk trick at the wall. The guitars, bass, and drums do exactly what you expect (slow-builds, 2-note riffs, etc.) and never surprise or create interesting melodies. On top of this, the vocals are horrendous. The vocalist spends the whole album accidentally drifting out of key, which would seem to be almost impossible given that the vocal melodies are also incredibly unimaginative. Every note is the most predictable (and whiny) note available to choose – and he still struggles to belt it out correctly. Definitely an album to skip.
Rated 6/10
I was expecting/hoping to dig this a bit more on relisten, but I’m still not fully into this one. I dig the overall sound and ~vibe~ (I hate using that word), but the melodies/songs themselves leave a bit to be desired. I definitely don’t think this is on the same level as a lot of their 1993 “alternative rock” contemporaries, but I’ll remain optimistic that it will grow on me yet.

First of all, I really dislike the album art. That's got nothing to do with the music, but I'm just throwing that criticism out there, because it looks like... well, you know what it looks like. Don't play dumb. As far as the music goes, I guess it's good? It sounds just like a million other acts, so I guess that's acceptable? I'm glad a lot of people like this, though; just keep it away from me. Especially that cringe-ass off-key ballad singing they do.

Another band that I wish I'd got into sooner. Quite grungey, but subtler and more varied.
