So this album was described as new wave, and it's okay. Music from the 80s, to me, tends to overuse synthesizers and can sound kind of cheesy sometimes, but I appreciate that this album didn't do that (real instruments for the win here). The singing style, however, employs that brit-pop spoken singing, which I'm not really a fan of. I gave it a second listen and enjoyed it more than the first listen, however. I like songs with dark tones and this had a good handful of those.

It's pretty good. For some moments, it reminded me of REM or The Replacements. I particularly enjoyed Pretty in Pink, No tears, It goes on (really loved the guitar work on this one), All of This and Nothing... Many people seem to have issues with the saxophone. Not me. This is 3,5 stars for me.

As far as the the endless new wave in this list goes, this wasn’t too bad I guess.

Rated 6/10

Of course, Pretty in Pink is great, but it felt like most other songs were just rehashes of the same material. Decent enough but not outstanding.

Nah. Do not want. Just can't get into New Wave. But I gave it a go.

I'm starting to wonder if the late 70s & early 80s was my ideal musical era and I was born twenty years too late. Saxophone Punk(TM) makes me lose my mind every time I hear it (even if X-Ray Spex did it better). At some point I’ll need to start complaining about the volume of post-punk and new wave albums on this list, but not today.

This album probably isn't required listening unless you're a genre fan. Spotify defaults to the original UK track listing which stacks "Dumb Waiters" and "Pretty In Pink" right up front. The result is an album which, unfortunately, starts to sound pretty same-y through the middle, and then ends with a mellow double-whammy of "All Of This And Nothing" and "She Is Mine". The US order makes for a slightly more engaging listening experience and I'd recommend that - it's the version that starts with "Pretty In Pink".

While we're taking about it, "Pretty In Pink" became the most notable track from this album because there was a John Hughes movie named after it and (a re-recorded version) was featured on the soundtrack. Listening to it today, I'm struck by how much the vocals sounds like something that could have come out of a band like Orgy or Deadsy in the early 00s.

This guy's singing straight up blows. There's some decent energy going on with the rest of the band, nothing spectacular, but he keeps ruining the music with his off-key singing. It's mad. Get rid of Richard Butler and give the sax guy more airtime -- that would fix all my problems with this record.

didnt hate it. Love my way is their only banger song so far and its not on this one tho. Low 3

Rated 6/10

New wave stuff. Decent. Wasn’t yearning for more. But worthy of 3.

Rated 8/10

This was a nice surprise, particularly after reading a lot of upvoted 'blah' reviews. It's got a really good energy across the album, but the music in general really brings it up a notch for me. Despite what those reviews say, I think they've got quite a unique sound and style. I like the use of sax and instrumentation in general, and there's some great rhythms. Mr. Jones is the standout track for me, although there's plenty of others I really enjoyed and tapped along to happily.

3.5 rounded up.

Rated 6/10

Very strong opening, but gets pretty repetitive quite quickly.

Rated 6/10

Almost good. Something about is preventing me from liking this :(

Rated 4/10

Really not a standout album. Pretty standard other than that wailing saxophone. 2/5

Rated 4/10

I feel like I’ve already listened to this even though I know I haven’t. Just kinda generic. I think I knew Dumb Waiters and Pretty in Pink ahead of time. Not really my jam. Favorite song was Mr Jones.

Rated 4/10

Nothing really memorable about this one.

Rated 6/10

This album is just generic new wave. There is absolutely nothing notable here, except for the singer sounding like John Lydon on a couple tracks. He then proceeds to sound like generic new wave singer #653 on the rest of the album.

Rated 4/10

Sounds like a generic version of all the british new wave we've had on this list.

Rated 8/10

DAMN this was one of the best week's I've ever had doing this project.

The Furs are like a new-wave Led Zeppelin with a twisted sax that comes in the room every once in a while to wake everyone up.Owes a lot to Bowie, like most new wave, but they really take that off-kilter glam in a different heavier direction. The Steve Lillywhite production is a good match for the Furs slightly dissonant loping guitar/drums/bass surge: the dry beefy production, drums forward, favoring the low end; sprinkled with bits of high pitched punctuation from the guitar, keyboard, and sax... a lot of tension/resolution. It's a BIG sound. Richard Butler's voice ties it all up neatly, confidently. One of my favorite bands, much nostalgia bias here for me. Great to see Psychedelic Furs on the list.
