Yes, it's misogynistic and childish but I must admit that even when I was wincing at the lyrics, I was having fun.
Rated 4/10
The first album I ever obsessed about, I will listen to it again it's been a while
This did not age that well, still the best Eminem album though
I still like some of the edginess, it's a fun album
Great cover in my opinion too
It hurts to give this a low rating
Rock bottom is gemuinly a great song
Rated 6/10
Cool lp I’d not heard in full. Singer and lyrics are excellent. I like how he’s playing an exaggerated character called Slim Shady complete with cartoon violence. The word play is elegant and ingenious, you feel every word has earned its place.
Backing music is a bit pedestrian and the lp is a bit too long.
Rated 2/10
Hip hop doesn't become music just because white kids rap. I listened to the first track briefly, recognized it from before, and still think it's crap, just like I did back then. I didn't need to listen to the rest. 1/5

Better than The Marshall Mathers LP, but still terrible. 1/5

Better than Coldplay

This may have aged horribly, but I don't think I would have enjoyed this in 1999 either. I really don't care for the edgelord theme this album brings on. The skits are insufferable and the songs may as well be skits most of the time, so those are insufferable as well. There are some good parts to this, I generally like the beats and sometimes it feels like Eminem is actually about to say something meaningful. Before he comes back to 'kiss my ass' -esque lyrics. None of it that makes me want to listen to it again, I feel emberassed for even putting this album on. The first notes of the following album in the playlist were liberating.

The quintessential album for boys in the 90s. I was 9 when this came out and my best friend of the same age got this album. His parents didn't care what albums he got. I remember this album, Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, and Tupac being in his rotation.
I remember "Role Model" really making me laugh as a kid. I knew even then that the lyrics were satirical. It was kind of a comedy album to me.
Anyways, it's a good album. It would be great, but the lyrics, always goofy, have also aged a little poorly.

Hard to argue with the rhyming fluency, but the subject matter can be rather cringe at times. I think he got stronger over time and the seeds for that are found here.

Ich mag Eminem gerne, man sieht sein Talent, aber die Songs, textlich und vom Sound sind nicht gut für mich. Würds mir nicht nochmal anhören. Bin auch kein Fan von Skits auf den ganzen Rap-Alben
Rated 6/10
You know, I was never a fan of the horrorcore angle, but I've come to appreciate the Slim Shady persona as a way to deliver unhinged rhymes that wouldn't otherwise exist in the English language. He's clearly always been crazy talented, and combined with Dre's golden touch production of the era, I can see how he made it big with this one (though I kind of prefer the more refined MMLP).
Unfortunately, over the years, that same shock value has made him an easy idol for the worst people you know. By way of the butterfly effect, Eminem gave us Tom MacDonald, and there is no music that is worth that price.
Standouts: My Name Is • Guilty Conscience • If I Had • Rock Bottom
Rated 2/10
I'm incredibly not interested in simple cheesy music loops with inane talking over the top. Seriously wondering what the appeal is here.
0.5/5.0: Unlistenable
Rated 4/10
i struggled to rate this one. on one hand the beats are incredible and his flow is immaculate. on the other hand its an incredible bloated album where the majority of the songs simply aren't memorable. thats to say nothing of the actual lyrical content. i understand the context of the album but it doesnt help it age well at all. the marshall mathers lp had similar issues but was much more interesting.
Rated 2/10
Occasionally funny but mostly uninteresting - doesn't have the atmosphere or energy of horror rap from the 90s and it's not charming in the way some silly / comedic rap can be. Doesn't really go anywhere
Rated 8/10
This album hit the ground running. It's so iconic, several huge hits, great skits, and incredible talent.
Rated 4/10
Musically interesting, lyrically puerile.
Rated 6/10
I loved Eminem when this album came out and his early output remains his best. This is Eminem before he jjst dtaryed rapping as quickly as possible, yes the content can be uncomfortable (to say the least) at times, but it is dtill a great album.
Guilty Conscience was always my favourite Eminem track and had a great video.
The album just doesn’t live up to the memory. I guess in many ways the shock of prime Eminem has long gone and there is just better rap music out there.

Well this is a whiplash change of direction from yesterday's Talking Heads album.
Full disclaimer, I bought this when it was first released but probably haven't heard it in its entirety in 20 years. I remembered very little except the famous tracks.
My Name Is might be the most unhinged opening track ever, but it very much sets the scene. Eminem makes me slightly uncomfortable, which frankly I suspect he'd enjoy enormously. And he's incredibly good at what he does plus the beats are great.
When it comes to the lyrics, they're frequently clever but often *mean*. Funny but *problematic*. I have never entirely understood how much of Slim Shady is a joke and how much is true for him. And I'm also not sure how much that matters, given that regardless of how seriously he takes what he says, some of his listeners really do?
Judging it purely off the record, I liked "The Marshall Mathers LP" better in the early 2000s (but again, I've not heard it for a long time) and I like this less than I did when it was released. I'm far too much of a pearl-clutching, middle aged middle class woman.
A surprising 2/5.
