I like it, it’s music of a particular time and place, but it doesn’t particularly wow me. Perhaps it’s because I’m partial to Lesley Gore’s rendition of “You Don’t Own Me”. She does have a bit of a rock and roll voice for someone who didn’t sing rock and roll music, which is cool.

Better than Coldplay

A 1960s vocal pop album consisting entirely of covers is probably not one of the essential 1001 albums of all time. Even the likes of Willie Nelson loses a star automatically for having an all-covers album- and Dusty is clearly no Willie. Realistically, this is closer to the Rolling Stones' debut in quality. The singing is good, but it's just basic 60s pop. Is it important? I have no idea. Is it good? Depends on who you ask. If you ask me, I'd say that it's pleasant enough without really offering anything of substance. This has not been a good week for albums for me(Stephen Stills is mediocrity incarnate and Eminem is way too aggressive and hateful), and this album does little to turn this meh streak around.

Sounds great, and I understand it was a different time, but I don’t get these cover albums from this period.

Dusty in Memphis is one of the best albums I’ve had on this list so far. Every song is expertly arranged, great individually but seems to work even better as an album.

By comparison, this album is utterly pointless. Zero cohesion. A bunch of generic covers where just about every song here has a better version by someone else. (The Shirelles, The Supremes, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Dionne Warwick.)

1 star for being another pointless inclusion that felt like filler to get to 1001.

A mixture of some classic tunes (24Hrs from Tulsa, Wishin' and Hopin', I Only Want To Be With You, Can I Get A Witness), along with some pretty naff early 60s songwriting (Do Re Mi and My Colouring Book). Pretty amazing for a debut (although she had been around for a while in a couple of groups prior to this), but then she had some of the best songwriters in the business at her beck and call, with a voice to suit.

Ahh what a pleasant start to the day. The gatekeepers seem to have decreed that Sandie, Dusty, Petula, Lulu, Bobbie, Françoise etc must forfeit there place in the pantheon of classic albums to free up space for all those run of the mill Creedence Floyd and Zeppelin lps.

I suspect if this list was made now this lp would be axed leaving only Dusty in Memphis carrying the torch for soulful 60’s pop. That would be a shame.

Great arrangements, superb vocal performance and solid song selection.

Back in the days when the songwriters wrote the songs and singers just sang them.

She has a lovely voice and they are fine songs. As you would expect when the best singers were given the best songs. A few I recognised but the album is so old (although still 2 months younger than me!) that it's difficult to know if they are covers, done by somebody else later or where I might have heard them.

Pleasant and harmless, but very middle of the road 60s radio fayre.

Rated 6/10

Nice voice, just a bummer that at the time so few artists wrote their own songs/relied on covers. Good overall, though. 3/5

This is an amazing album. Great vocals, especially backing vocals. Fun or serious when it wants to be. A problem I usually have with shorter songs is that you blink and it's over and you don't remember it. Every song here was memorable. The writing is amazing, which she didn't do herself but she definitely chose the best songs to showcase on the album. Even the imperfections are great. Near perfect album.

bro -1 star for that ray charles impression tf

Rated 6/10

Lovely voice, it goes without saying. But nothing here to get the blood pumping (and I'm just going to say it here because I know it's a safe space "Preacher Man" is not a classic, it's dull).

Solid - needs more Pet Shop Boys

Rated 6/10

Pleasant enough listen, but none of the tracks really stood out. Quite nice background music.

Rated 4/10

A cover compilation? What are we doing here? I loved Dusty In Memphis when it came up, and yet this somehow got old by the fifth track!

Standouts: Mama Said • Wishin' And Hopin' • Don't You Know

Rated 6/10

lijepo, fino, kratko, slatko! vrhunac – will you love me tomorrow. ostatak kakvoćom pomalo vrludav, no sve u svemu lijepo :)

This is Dusty Springfield’s second album in this project. I was pleasantly surprised by the first one. I had expected something completely different. I was looking forward to this album. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to my expectations. The music was okay, but it sounded like it was made ten years earlier, back in the ’50s. I don’t think I’ll be listening to this album again anytime soon. 3/5

Great debut album. You can hear so many singers from this point onwards that have clearly taken this album as massive inspiration.

Cool album.

Rated 6/10

A cherry collection of tasty tunes for my doll and me to cut a rug down at the Sock Hop or the local juke joint.

Rated 4/10

two dusty springfield albums in three days is too much. also not as good as the other one
