A nice debut with a handful of classics including several covers. However, Dusty does not yet have the emotional depth and sensuality that would later characterize her voice.

Rated 10/10

I thought Dusty was a country singer! This midmodern pop masterpeice is really beautifully done.

Rated 6/10

A British approximation of some of the best American RnB & Soul songs and sounds of the early 60s. She brings a lot to the material - a charismatic performance and a wide ranging rich voice that's as comfortable belting out a powerful anthemic chorus as whispering a soft hushed line. The production is great too - nothing original really, but a solid recreation of the Stax, Spectre sound - lush and maximalist: gospel singers, horns, swelling strings, crispy clean guitars, jazzy drums, and a propulsive bass. The album is at its best on the uptempo RnB tracks that are brimming with energy, the slow soul ballads get mired in the mush of sentimental strings.

Favorites are the ones I instantly recognized, incredible hits: Mama Said, Will you Love Me Tomorrow, I Only Want to Be With You

Solid '60s pop. Could listen to this stuff all day. Reminds me of being in high school and having a car with only a radio in it. Just drove around all day listening to "oldies". Good vibes only.

Rated 4/10

As with a lot of 60s artists, their debut is basically a lot of covers and while it all sounds really good, its still cover versions.

Rated 4/10

I theoretically shouldn't have a problem with this music, I just don't like Dusty.

Rated 4/10

I enjoyed this more than I expected to, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that this was all music pillaged from previous black artists.

Rated 6/10

This wasn’t on my streaming service, but I know many of the songs. It’s fine, but not my style.

Rated 4/10

Generic '60s cover album. She's a good singer, but nothing outstanding here. Why is this here? I should keep track of how many times I've asked myself this, probably 10+ times so far. 2* for not being terrible.

Rated 6/10

I don't understand how this album made the list.
Every album so far - even the ones that absolutely were not my taste - has had some cohesion and creative vision. This is, a skillfully done, compilation of cover tracks.
Great vocals, good backing band, but still a collection of covers. Almost every track is available in more interesting versions.

Rated 4/10

A basic ass cover album? Don't think I've heard a bad version of You Don't own me before. Did the guy who wrote the book have a crush on the woman or what?

Rated 6/10

This album didn't ring a bell and I can tell you I wasn't thrilled with the selection. That said, there were songs I recognized.

Not great, but not terrible. I see why it was iconic back in the day.

"Crayons ready? Very well, begin to colour me."

I wasn't expecting to know any of these songs based off of the artist's name and the album, but I knew both of the first tracks! T1 - "Mama Said" Which is good, if not a little bit annoying when someone else can't help but to sing it, and T2- "You don't own me" which is a classic anthem for women's empowerment (playlist track). The rest of the album was a bit of a slog for me to get through, but nowhere near as bad as some of these other albums have proven to be. I will admit that my spotify version doesn't have all of the songs off of the album, and is missing T8, T12, T13, and T14. But i'm not really mad about their exclusion from the album.

I can see why it was included in this list, I'm just not a huge fan.

Not really a fan of this. It's not that she's a bad singer, it just doesn't work for me. I struggled to finish this. 1.5/5

This was my second album by Dusty Springfield in this generator. This is her debut album. Apparently, prior to this, she was a member of the band The Lana Sisters. After she left that band, she started the band The Springfields with her brother. While touring the US in the early 60's, she was exposed to soul music, and decided decided to try a solo career, where her desire to sing these styles of music wasn't so limited.

I can't hear the song Mockingbird without thinking of Dumb and Dumber now. Her first hit single from this album was I Only Want To Be With You. This song was recorded while she was still a member of The Springfields, and was released one week after their final tour.

Overall, not her best work, but a great album when you consider that it was her debut. Her voice is beautiful, and her country/folk stylings are perfect for a quiet morning listen.

Favourite songs: I Only Want To Be With You, Mama Said, Don't You Know, You Don't Own Me, Every Day I Have To Cry, Can I Get A Witness, Do Re Mi, Wishin' and Hopin'

Least favourite songs: My Colouring Book, I Wish I'd Never Loved You

There's a lot of really nice songs on here, but I realised they're all covers, so a lot of that is simply down to the power of the song writing. She's a good singer though, of course. It's a perfectly nice time overall.

Rated 4/10

Throughout the 1001, I've been trying to figure out "what is an album?". There's no doubt she's a great singer, but I do doubt this album constitutes a body of work.

3.5 ster
