This was a 5 star before I even hit play. I love this album, have done since it first came out. The singles from it are brilliant even if Bittersweet Symphony has suffered a bit from years of being overplayed. Sonnet for me is an outstanding song though.

I will say though as an overall album I think I would put A Storm In Heaven slightly ahead of it.

Top Track - Sonnet

Rated 6/10

Not as good overall as I remember, but it was floating around constantly in student accommodation

Rated 4/10

Like, it's fine, I guess. I do recognize the first song. How do these guys have 16M monthly listeners on Spotify??? Why???

Rated 8/10

Was fine and chill.

Rated 8/10

I was surprisingly pleased by this album. No, I will not ever listen to the full 15 minute song. But I am definitely going to save it and listen to it on a day I'm feeling nostalgic. For a one-hit-wonder, this is a really good album.

Rated 4/10

Rated 8/10

The first track overshadows this album … I’d forgotten how many great tracks there are 👍

Rated 6/10

I've got a theory that one of the reasons Noel and Liam Gallagher seem to have such an affinity with Richard Ashcroft from the Verve is that they all give interviews that are vastly more entertaining than a lot of their music. A couple of these songs are great on their own (Sonnet has always been my favourite) but taken as an album, it's all a bit slow and stately.

Rated 10/10

Very cohesive album which doesn’t feel as long as it actually is to me. I couldn’t stand Bittersweet Symphony and The Drugs Don’t Work when I was younger because they were very overplayed in my house, but I’m getting over it.

Rated 2/10

For as long as I can remember I’ve fucking hated Bittersweet Symphony, it’s quite possibly my least favorite song of all time. Based on this I just assumed I’d hate the rest of the album and I was absolutely correct.

In fact, I hate these guys so much that tomorrow’s album is gonna be an automatic 5/5 simply because it’s not The Verve.

Rated 6/10

Bittersweet Symphony may be their most recognizable song, but I feel like it doesn't represent their sound. I think that's done by Lucky Man, but it's altogether a long and decent album.

Rated 6/10

some really cool songs

Rated 8/10

Miles ahead of A Northern Soul. One of the great songs of the 90s and a few other greats sprinkled in. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.

Rated 4/10

This album suffers mightily from pacing. Like a lot of 90s albums, this album is both too long as a whole and each song individually. This last point is where this album really fails. Each songs stops developing after 2 minutes, but then we're subjected to 5 minutes of a repeating chorus to end the song. But even if the band had managed to write with better pacing, the vocal melodies are predictable and there's nothing special about the music either.

2.0/5.0: Disappointing

Rated 6/10

i came into this album with the perception of the verse as a one hit wonder due to the huge success of bitter sweet symphony. i always thought the song was fine, not spectacular but way too long. after listening to the album, i now believe that to be an accurate description of this entire album

Rated 6/10

“Urban Hits” by The Verve is one of those albums that there are far too many of: one big hit – “Bittersweet Symphony” – and otherwise insignificant. Of course, what is insignificant is in the eye of the beholder. In this case, it refers to Britpop of the most average kind – and Britpop is not the most exciting genre of music in itself.
Not bad but boring.

Rated 8/10

Similarly to the last The Verve album I've had; this was a lot better than I was expecting, even if it is a bit overblown in phases and an exhausting listen in one sitting without being in the right mindset.

The songs on "Urban Hymns" generally felt more dextrous, textured, varied and accomplished than "A Northern Soul", earning this an extra star over its predecessor, and it's the psychedelic nuances on offer here compared to some of their Britpop compatriots that make The Verve a more compelling case for a revisit (and perhaps a purchase in future).

Rated 8/10

Great album, some classic 90's indie rock, but still sounds fresh somehow.

Stand out tracks are the singles but the album tracks are strong

It’s a little long (standard 75 min 90s cd issue) as most songs are of a similar tempo/feel in a dreamy, psychedelic way. Most songs overstay their welcome, most are 6-7 mins where 4 would be better

Rated 2/10

One of the most generic shits I have heard ever. It starts with the hit, and it should end there as well. And I never liked that song either. This band is an Oasis clone, but a very bad one.
