This album is a classic, no dull spots.

Before he got weird, fell out with the record company and changed his name to a symbol, there was this album. Not his first album, but without doubt his best. A ton of hits on here and I challenge anyone not to know the words to the majority of the songs. Nostalgia overload.

Rated 8/10

9 canciones y algo más de 40 minutos. Este estaba en casa en vinilo y tengo buenos recuerdos. Lo mejor está al final. Desde When doves cry, I would die 4 U y Purple rain. Imprescindible por supuesto.

Rated 8/10

Not a perfect album, but one that is still pretty amazing. 4.5/5

Rated 10/10

Pure 80s excess. This album is overflowing with ideas, each song is layers and layers of synths, huge reverby drums, virtuouso guitars, and charismatic vocals popping in and out of every range possible. It all (more or less) coheres around big catchy hooks and memorable choruses, then departs into extra codas, tacked on solos, refrains, and returns. The production and performances are so tight - its bursting at the seams and gloriously excessive without being distractingly busy or chaotic. It's obviously a pop album, but there's something ineffably wierd and singular about the conception and execution of these ideas that transcends genre.

Rated 10/10

A masterpiece. A couple of the songs are very much of the 80s, but the majority of this album is simply a timeless classic.

No notes. Perfect.

I just don't think I'm a fan of Prince. He has moments of brilliance and some of that shows on this album. But as a whole the album is fairly boring.

Rated 10/10

A true masterpiece. Up their with the all time great albums.

The Prince of pop rides! Great album. Not necessarily my thing, but what a bop

Concentrated perfection

I went into this album thinking that i wouldn't like it but wow... I was surprised to say the least. It really is one of the greatest pop albums of the 80s. With every track I can hear the influence it made on even today's music. Can't give anything less than a 5.

Rated 4/10

Ik ben blij als er een hit voorbij komt. Vooral When doves cry is een lekker cheesy '80's nummer. Een betere in zijn soort. Laten we het tweede sterretje daar maar aan koppelen. Want dat geschreeuw in die andere nummers is verre van prinselijk.

Rated 10/10

The thing I love about this album is that, like the best movies, it's a world you're just plunged into. Prince doesn't care if you know nothing about it and don't understand the rules, he just gets on with it. It's playful and silly, an utterly charismatic blend of genres. I think I finally get Prince.

Rated 10/10

I remeber being kid in the video store and seeing the wall sized poster for this album/movie. I had no real idea of who Prince was and my parents seemed pretty eager to keep it that way, but I remeber being frozen in awe of just how damned cool Prince must be.

So, the elephant in the room - Darling Nikki. What a singularly fascinating song. I'm sure the sexual subject matter and the outro with lyric played in reverse is a big part of why this whole album was the focus of so much conservative and censorship ire. It's probably also part of the reason why my parents weren't stoked to see me gawking at the poster, all those years back. If you can look past that though, it is a relentlessly catchy track, merging funk, rock and healthy portion of musical theater.

Outside of that one salacious track, the rest of the album is focused on common funk and R&B lyrical themes. The arrangements, the live band vibe, Prince's vocal diversity and improvisation all come together with fluid perfection. Nearly every track is a stand alone hit, and played back to back they sound cohesive and congruent.

An all out great album!

I wonder if it's a little dated? Still, a classic pop/rock album!

Rated 10/10

One of my favorite albums of all time. I find it thoroughly enjoyable throughout and consider it a perfect album. Prince's absolute zenith with his greatest lineup. Love pretty much everything about this album.
