Yeah, it is a great album. It's earnest and concise old-time with a pretty high production value. I'm not sure how random it is to receive this album the day after her death but here we are. Her art was always about encapsulating life in a song and, if I base my critique on that mission, this is a 5 from me. I simply cannot separate the art and artist on this one. It'd be stupidly pedantic to try.

The world has lost an icon, long live Dolly đŸ€

Got this on the day of Dolly Parton’s death. Kinda weird that the Jolene record isn’t on this list given that it has two of the greatest songs of all time on it. This one has some gorgeous tunes on it as well, though.

I know they're putting a thumb on the scale by assigning this today but I don't give a fuck. It's a gorgeous record. RIP to a hero.

pleasant and honest country. RIP. 3.5

Dolly is a real one. RIP.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre, though. Didn't mind listening to this album; it's fine. Title track is best one.

I don’t think I’ve ever played a Dolly Parton album before today. Of course, I’m familiar with her hits and well aware of her significance as a songwriter and as a catalyst for many musicians, as well as the role model she has been for many female musicians of subsequent generations. And I’m aware of her tireless social commitment to the poor, to women and to marginalised groups, and of her resistance to exclusion and discrimination. Yesterday it was announced that Dolly Parton had passed away at the age of 80. Reason enough to give her music a listen and to pay tribute to a woman who will leave a gap in US society that cannot be filled.

I have little connection to country music. With very few exceptions (tending more towards country rock), the genre reflects a reality that is quite alien to my European, urban culture. Most country music does end up sounding clichĂ©d and saccharine, white and idealised. This largely applies to Dolly Parton’s 1971 album "Coat of Many Colors" as well. But I cannot help but acknowledge her musical and vocal mastery. It’s all brilliantly done. Dolly Parton wasn’t just an icon because she was a good person, but because she was a bloody good musician. I like a few of the songs; a few are a bit too ‘country’ for my taste. But today isn’t the day to play the know-it-all critic. We’ll always love you, Dolly.

She was an absolute icon and by all accounts, the nicest person on the planet.

But I’m far too cynical and prone to misery for this ‘let’s make the world a happy place ‘ stuff.

Dolly meant the world to me and I'm absolutely heartbroken she's left this world. This album is 5 stars, full stop. I will accept no other ratings.

Beautiful. A couple of songs definitely hit harder than they would have done if she was still here.

Please, everyone, try to make the world A Better Place To Live.

Don't leave it to the likes of Dolly.

It's impossible to find fault with this record. A snappy LP that is easy to spin time and time again which could capture the heart of even the most hardened cynic. Dolly Parton shares a poppy form of country which still impacts the charts today - it's almost a rite of passage for popstars to have at least a token single ripping of Dolly. She knows how to write an iconic song with tonnes of energy and tell a great story while doing it.

Standout: The Way I See You

If somebody put this on, I wouldn't mind it. But I'd rather listen to something else. Perhaps if I paid attention to the lyrics I'd like it more.

Rated 10/10

Beautiful, feels fitting to listen to this the day after Dolly passed away. Good storytelling. The title song is great. I also really liked The Way I See You and A Better Place to Live.

Such as sad loss. What a legend. Good at everything she did and a good good person to boot, consistently decent. This was wonderful with such real life tales of woe and perfect stories, especially the title track.
