Really good album. Had never heard the artist before, wouldn’t be against checking out some more of his stuff after this

Rated 10/10

Exceptional album which turned hip hop on its head on release and understandably so

Rated 10/10

Just an amazing piece of art

Rated 6/10

Hmmm. Parts of this are brilliant. I believe many people have this as his best album. I can understand that. I prefer To Pimp, Mr Morale and GNX. This does not mean I don't like Good Kid. I do. It does start to drag towards the end though. It's a 3.5 really.

Obviously he's a great musician and storyteller. I'm not gonna repeat the same shit everyone else has, but I will say there's more to the lyrics than what's on the surface in the hope that those who dislike it for it's "misogyny" or whatever takes another look at it because that's not the point of this album.

Story and meanings aside, he's made better stuff. I'm not a great fan of the downtempo, mellow hip hop stuff in general. The basslines are great though and the way he changes his voice to represent different characters and still maintain a high standard is really impressive. High 3

I understand why some people consider this one of the greatest albums ever made, but it's a tad over-long to really be 5 stars.

4.0/5.0: Great

Rated 8/10

i had heard 3/4s of the tracks before. obviously kendrick is a great rapper and the beats are great as well but i was always annoyed by the high pitch voice he uses on some of the songs. money trees and swimming pools in particular use it quite frequently. i understand that thematically its supposed to represent his conscience but it doesn't work for me. additionally almost every song overstayed its welcome by multiple minutes. even with those complaints i still enjoyed it for the most part

Great start.

I PRAY MY DICK GET BIG AS THE EIFFEL TOWER
SO I CAN FUCK THE WORLD FOR 72 HOURS

fiquei imerso demais nesse aqui. papo reto.

Oof. You'll carry that weight.

Just another ex-1001 album!™

After heavily disliking "To Pimp A Butterfly", much to the shock of one of my mates, I said I'd give Kendrick Lamar another try.

The first half of the album felt like "Blah, blah, bitches, bitches. Where my motherfuckin' dominoes at?" Urgh!

The second half got better, but still felt mostly drug-fuelled gangster cliche tosh.

I tried, but nope!

Rated 2/10

I don't get it. This is popular enough to be the superbowl halftime show act? Baffling.

I didn't like the first album we had to listen to by him, and I like this one less. It's just so boring. The last song on the album (Compton with Dr. Dre) had a little bit of life to it, but I had already made up my mind that I hated this album by then.

Rated 8/10

Yes!! Yes!! I already know this one. Takes me back to 2012, which was a great year for me. When this came out, 106 & Park was still a thing (but not TRL or the Rock Countdown or the VH1 countdown). Anyhoo, I've still got it in the rotation.

Highlights: I mean, Kendrick's got flow. It's undeniable. Almost all of these tracks are great, especially 'Backseat Freestyle', 'Money Trees', 'good kid' (the line "from a function that tooken place"!), 'Swimming Pools'

Lowlights: 'Compton', the Jay-Z version of 'Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe', and, as you might expect from the genre, there's a lot of slurs* on this album, which is why I can't give it a 5. Imagine a (good) slur-free rap. I wonder if you can ;__;

*For the pragmatics fans out there, I admit I'm using "slurs" a little imprecisely -- this album really only contains the b-word (which many (IMO incorrect) scholars say is not a slur) and the r-less n-word (which I agree is not really a slur (see Smith 2019), buut I still don't like hearing it as a white). So as these things go, it could be way worse.

Rated 10/10

My kids were all up in my grill about not giving five stars to To Pimp a Butterfly. But now I’m even more glad I didn’t because this album is a much better listen! All the stars!

Rated 8/10

please don't kill my wife

Rated 6/10

This made me sad. Respect for the conceptual thrust. Very intense, and (for my middle-class white ass) pretty rough. I see why people are praising Kendrick Lamar. Interesting.

Rated 10/10

Erinomainen kymppiluvun räp-levy, jonka jälki näkyy vieläkin genressä. Arvoin vähän nelosen ja vitosen välillä, mut annetaan nyt femma.

Rated 8/10

Superb - his 2nd best....

Rated 2/10

Ugh, hip hop is just so bad. I honestly don't get how people listen to this and think that it is somehow meaningful or profound. The lyrics literally sound like something that a stupid, horny 7th grader would come up with by trying to write things that he thought the older kids would think were cool. I just can't get on with it. I mean if you like this, more power to you, but listen to the words and maybe reconsider. I get so tired of this entire genre being so degrading to women and self-aggrandizing. Please stop it. And as if the lyrics weren't bad enough, why the hell is this just absolutely laden with autotune? It really is like he stepped back and asked himself, "this already terrible, how can we make it even worse?" I'm just at a total loss as to how this kind of music is so popular. 1/5

Rated 4/10

Not bad but not something I would listen to again. I'm not a big hip hop/rap fan but I can see this album is good in that genre

I enjoyed Crompton. Maybe that is the Dre Dre influence.

Favourite song: Crompton
Least favourite: A lot of the songs are just the same
Album artwork: Not for me
