It was alright, but it get a bit long..

Rated 8/10

I had no idea. What a wild ride.
One forgets what great musicians Banks Rutherford and Collins were, not to mention Peter Gabriel's outlandishness. AMazing, arty, bizarre.

Rated 10/10

Filled with a lot of great moments. Excellent jams and songs throughout the entire album. Its a long sit but it doesn't really lose my interest and is plenty varied. All the songs work incredibly well on their own.

Rated 8/10

People keep saying that this album is weird but that's not the problem. I think BORING is a better word for it.

Rated 6/10

i really enjoyed quite a few songs on this, but a 3 feels appropriate as i don’t see myself returning to this album in full anytime soon

Rated 4/10

Lots of cool synth parts, some good riffs, thunderous bass and epic sweeping passages. Peter Gabriel has the best voice of all the prog singers. But it's really a pretty tedious chore getting through this. It's an album of good moments that come and go without leaving much impression bc they're mired in a million overly elaborate ideas.

Rated 8/10

Classic Peter Gabriel Genesis. A bit prog-rock for my tastes, but good nonetheless.

Rated 4/10

Has it's moments but so much of this is actively terrible - Counting Out Time may be the worst song I've encountered yet

Rated 4/10

Ok, but nothing really exciting to me. Seemed like they wanted to emulate Rush a bit, but it just didn't have the same magic. 2.5/5

There’s something about the production that makes this really hard to listen to. I dig some of what’s going on musically but have trouble paying attention. I’d like to give it another listen to get more of the story but dunno of I can bring myself to go through the whole 90 minutes again. Once was hard enough.

I remember going to the house of a friend of mine, who was about two or three years older than me, in the early 80s! This album was part of his collection, even though quite a few years had passed since Peter Gabriel left the band and Phil Collins was already making his mark as the new frontman of Genesis.

He put it on the record player for us to listen to, and even back then, it was far too complex and long for us to listen to the whole thing in one go.

We stopped it and went back out onto the street to play a bit of football!

It’s funny to realise now that I’m getting that same feeling again; but I’m no longer young enough to go and kick a ball about in the street (and there are far too many cars there these days!) - anyway, a 3 for its historical value and significance

Errogenous Zones, I love you!

I've listened to this album many times before, and still have no clear idea what the narrative is about. The lyrics are very poetic, however, full of striking images and interesting turns of phrase. Musically as well, this album is great; I love the frantic keys and fantastical melodies that turn up throughout the first half. The second album is a bit more meandering and nightmarish, but still enjoyable and very atmospheric. I think this is the band at their creative peak, as things just weren't the same after Gabriel (and later Hackett) left. In fact, I think their second phase was so starkly different to the first that they should have changed the band's name. Overall, this is a brilliant album and one of the few double albums on the list that earns it's place. A real high point in prog rock.

Oh hey, another 70s album. I'm shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you. I feel like this entire project is sponsored by the 1970s. Out of 145 albums so far, 40 of them have been from the 70s. Since my overall ranking is around 2.6 for the decade, you can imagine my excitement in seeing this album pop up.

That said, I'm pretty sure I've heard of Genesis. I *think* Phil Collins was the drummer or something? It's not like I'm a huge Collins fan, (but I also don't have Arseblog-levels of hate for him), so I'm not sure how much that's gonna swing this album to the positive, but here goes nothing.

Verdict: It's fine. Whatever. 2.5 stars.

Rated 8/10

Probably not getting the most out of it for not paying enough attention to the lyrics, but was fun to sit with for a while. I think there’s a song about gooning on here? I am somebody who’s more on board for solo peter gabriel in general, but all eras of genesis have good stuff

Rated 8/10

Very prog, very long, very good. Just too patchy to be great, but really interesting and influential, including inspiring some massive bands (e.g. muse, killers, early radiohead). Solid, if unspectacular, but a band I expect to appear again before the end

Rated 4/10

Pretty average. Not too much stood out to me and it was a real chore to get through. There's probably a solid 3 album in there somewhere, but not even halfway through I was ready for it to be over. Kind of a painful listening experience.

Rated 6/10

I must admit, this is a disappointment, and a huge step down from their previous album, Selling England by the Pound. Its heavy use of synths lead to an album that hardly feels like it means any of the music its producing, and while there are certainly cool and good uses of the synths, it isn't anything that artists like Brian Eno weren't already nailing. I will say that the album does get close a lot to grabbing my attention, with many tracks catching my attention at first, and I must give it credit for that. It just fails to prove itself minutes into each song, and even the best tracks have nothing on its sibling that I once again can't help but compare it to. Cool concept, middling execution.

Rated 10/10

Feels like the first approachable prog rock album. Fascinating listen.

Rated 2/10

Wow...I don't hate prog, but this was a slog. It went way to long, and I didn't love the songs. Was thankful when it was done and I am rating this a one. 1/5
