The Good: Soul music!
The Bad: We had to travel up north to listen to it…
The Ugly: Finding out that Verve is northern slang for Verve…

I’ve already listened to that other The Verve album on this list (sorry for the spoiler alert there), you know, the one with their only real hit.
So when this album was presented to me my thoughts, in no particular order were:
Are you fucking kidding me?
Fuck you Mr Dimery!
Northern Soul… there’ve been some excellent norther soul bands, so let’s give this a spin…

Overall, really not that bad an album, except that it suffers from one annoying aspect… the need to over-extend most of the tracks.
Trance music is great for people on drugs, yet when you are sober, it rubs the wrong way.

At the end of the day, I can say that I prefer this album over the other one that’s on the list, yet, seeing as I gave that other album 3*, while knowing that 4* are placed on a have to listen to again list, I will make it a tie…

3*

The Good: Finally someone is covering a Tina Turner song!
The Bad: Realizing it’s a Bee Gees cover…
The Ugly: spousal aggression…

I always hate it when people get political in their commentary regarding artists… however, I watched a documentary yesterday which dealt with the death of two women related to a singer, who “got away with it” so to speak… So, Mr Green, you might have a great voice, and this album might be shits, but I am going to drop you 2* just for being an ass…

2*

The Good: Something modern!
The Bad: Seems these lovers are bored…
The Ugly: Wondering if we will ever have something labeled “modern” today that will be considered so in the future…

Yes, we are being philosophical here… also, we will now stop being philosophical…

I have heard the song roadrunner, and probably a couple of other ones, yet I am too lazy to dig into the wikipedia page to find out if/when/where this might have been the case.

All in all, one can hear the influence this album might have had on other bands. Most grateful is this person that not too many singers took a cue from the Jonathan’s voice…

Also, it took almost 5 years for this album to be released… is that because it was too modern at the time of recording, or was it because the damn music in that era was too good for this album to soil the this and that?

3*

✝Justice

Rated 4/10

The Good: We get justice!!!
The Bad: It is linked to a cross…
The Ugly: Finding out we’ve been duped into EMD…

I really tried to like this… I really did… more than anything so that I won’t look like a whining old bastard who just can’t get into the music of the younger peoples…

Then I put things into perspective, to realize that people born the year this was released will soon be 20 years old… now I really am an old bastard.

Anyway, not my cup of tea…. there were moments of “this is perfectly fine for a road-trip” but then the next tune would kick in and I would be wanting to hit the skip button…

Will not give this 1*, could even give it 3*, but out of spite will give it 2*

The Good: This album is civil!
The Bad: I was just in LA, and there’s no need to greet me from there…
The Ugly: Second TB album… why?

Yes, another Buckley album… another time I wish that his son would get a second album on the list, instead of the dad…

I do have to say that it starts of decent, but then descends into absolute horror…

Will give it 2* due to the first 2 songs… you might want to skip the rest

The Good: Baby dinosaur, who doesn’t like one of them?
The Bad: Wait, it’s one of them carnivore kind…
The Ugly: Carnivores living all over one-self… must suck… or bite…

I shall repeat what I wrote for the other Dino Jr album that I had to listen to, as it seems this is deemed important to listen to before one croaks:
"…

Did not like it, will place a more thorough recap at some other time”

I am going to spit, rinse and repeat…

Yes, I can hear the influence this band probably had one the shoegaze/grunge/alt scene that followed the hair-metal era most people want to forget ever existed… still, there are BETTER FUCKING BANDS that made grunge or alt music in ‘90s that are totally void on this list…

So, sorry for all you Dino Jr fans out there, but I can’t rate this album any higher than a fucking 1* because I don’t understand why I have to listen to some asshole sing all songs as flat and slightly off key as possible just to make a point.

1*

ps, I gave the other Dino Jr album a 2* rating, just FYI

The Good: Who doesn’t like a warm jet?
The Bad: Unless the we aren’t sitting in a jacuzzi…
The Ugly: We’re not in Kansas anymore…

I don’t know if the algorithm that spits forth the daily album takes into consideration what your state of mind is, or how you’ve been rating albums, however, in the past 5 days I have been graced with three albums, this being the third, which include Mr Eno as an artist…

As I don’t want to do any spoiler alerts for those who’ve not yet had the Ambient Sounds ep presented, I shall refrain from commentary, nor if you’ve not had the Roxy Music freshman attempt at music…

So what can I tell you about this album that you might not know? Well, nothing in particular… it is eclectic, it probably serves a real good purpose in many homes, mine excluded, yet, it is intriguing enough to need to listen to at least once, maybe several times in a lifetime.

I will shoot down the middle on this effort… it was okay, but not great…

3*

The Good: Mr Cohen just kept on smoking!
The Bad: He should have been smoking something else…
The Ugly: Having to sit through another Cohen album!

FUCK ME. 5. FIVE FUCKING TIMES!
You listen to one Cohen album, you’ve heard them all. Sure, if you like that kind of stuff, then enjoy it. I really believe that I will have to buy the book of the 1001 albums so that I can start understanding what the rationale is for Dimery and his list.

This was the third album I’ve had to listen to, so the last 2 albums need to either be something spectacular, or I am going to shit a brick.

Also, what is it with dying artist needing to record a swang song?

Off to listen to silence for the next 2 hours…

1*

The Good: We get a pin-up on the cover!
The Bad: Sometimes, a pin-up, just isn’t enough…
The Ugly: Album title = band name…

I have a soft spot for Brian Ferry, his album In Your Mind is a top 5 album for me… and oddly enough, not available on Apple Music…

Anyway, we are here to talk about Roxy Music…
Vibrato in voice = annoying
Sounds are Eno-esque… which is good.
Virginia Plain = excellent
This review = mediocre…

MetallicaMetallica

Rated 10/10

The Good: We get Metal!
The Bad: of the Lica kind…
The Ugly: Metal player wearing Licra…

What?

Okay, so anyone growing up in the US in the ‘90s has heard the hits… fucking monsters!
I forgot how massive this album was, and how important it was for metal music.

Now, I am sure that the purist out there view this album is pop, but I don’t care…. I banged my head to this music, saw them perform live 3 times in the ‘90s… and all the time I was viewed as a preppy by my friends.

So, needless to say, I had a lovely time thinking about those care free days back in the ‘90s, when all I had to worry about was passing an exam with a C and hoping to get laid over the weekend!

Nothing Else Matters…

5*

The Good: We get to hang out in Airports!
The Bad: We don’t know if we will be catching a plane.
The Ugly: Being lulled into a nap, to wake up and find that the plane is gone!

Mr Eno, what have you done?
I don’t know what to think of this… seriously… no clue.

I like it…
Then I get hypnotized…
Then I like it a little less…
Then I get hypnotized…
Then I like it a little bit more…

I could be stating something really stupid, but I am too lazy to find out if I am mistaken, but there is a documentary called Koyaanisqatsi, which is something one should see before one dies, which features music by Philip Glass, which to my recollection, sounds like this… at times…

But Eno did this well before Philip did… so go figure…

I don’t know what I am trying to say… guess I am being hypnotized again by track 1…

4* because it isn’t perfect, but damnit does it draw me in

The Good: Who doesn’t like a midnight ride?
The Bad: Finding out the ride is in a two-seater…
The Ugly: Paul brought along the Raiders… no space left…

What? Yes!

So, I’ve listened to this album a couple of times over the past weeks, and I have to say that it starts comforting you after a while.

Comfort, that’s a good thing… right?
Just like the midnight ride being a good thing… I guess.

Anyway, if I have to listen to that era kind of rock, or pop, or whatever the cool kids might have called that back in the day, then I am okay with this.

Just not certain if I want to dish out 4*...

The Good: Who doesn’t like a basket of light?
The Bad: Finding out that the basket has a hole in it…
The Ugly: Ever tried cleaning up spilled light?

Sure, I could just start this review off with a What The Actual Fuck!??!!?!??!!??! but why bother.
I am realizing that I should be thankful that my parents had to sit through this shit instead of me… Maybe they love it… I don’t.

Pentangle, 5? really? Oh, wait… read the wiki…

Some of the guitar playing is pretty damn solid though. So they have that going for them… but that’s about it.

I fear that I will blow a gasket if I see another “folk rock” album present itself… unless it is aqualung… which I will play now just to rinse the bad taste out of my mouth.

Sorry for all those who love this.. 1*

The Good: Fucking ‘90s party jams!
The Bad: Fucking ‘90s party jams!
The Ugly: Fucking ‘90s party jams!

Yes, I stuttered there… because that is what one would do back in the day ‘90s
One thing is for sure, you hit play and instantly are transported to the ‘90s, with the good and the bad.

Deee-Lite was a one hit wonder, where I lived. But I can understand how the band was able to amass a nice cult following…

Is this my thing? No.
Could I listen to this once a year? Yes.
Should this album be part of a party mix? Hell yes!

Groove’s in the heart babay!

TrafficTraffic

Rated 6/10

The Good: Not that kind of traffic…
The Bad: Feels like we are stuck in it though…
The Ugly: Realizing that the band is trafficing in it’s own name…

First time listening to these “cats”. Not sure what to think about it, as each time I think they’ve started a good tune, that tune ends and a shitty one follows.

However, Feelin’ Allright is just great, as I am very familiar with Joe Cocker’s version…

Anyway, going to give them 3* for being cool cats, but they kinda deserve 2...

The Good: We get to play video-games!
The Bad: Seems these tanks are not digital…
The Ugly: How German doesn’t translate that well into English…

It’s been 2 months since this album was presented to me, and I can’t recall why I did not rate it sooner… oh wait, maybe because you can’t find the freakin’ album anywhere as a streaming option?

So today I decided to try my luck on the tube. and I found that someone does have the album, spit into side a and side b, I am guessing, listed.
What I was kind of misisng would be the sound of a needle dropping on a vinyl record, followed by some soft wobbly-scratch-noise…

I doubt that I will ever listen to this album again, yet I am glad that I did listen to it… why? Because of the constant flow of shit records which I have to listen to that don’t offer anything new… yes, I am referring to anything with the moniker “Dance, Electric, Tecno” to it.

Dagmar doesn’t hold back in freaking you out with her voice… it isn’t bad, it isn’t pretty either, but I guess that is part of the cabaret style that she is giving to us.

So, yes, something totally different, that I would never have listened to unless it would have been suggested to me via a 1001 album you need to hear before you die kind of thing… good for you Mr D, for once I will not want to punch you in the groin…

3*

The Good: We will be able to live through this, or so we are told!
The Bad: We aren’t explained what “this” is…
The Ugly: What if this is getting a hole perforated somewhere where we don’t like there to be a hole???

Courtney… she is such an angry lady… should we offer to give her a hug?

I had the unfortunate surprise to find another Hole album to be on this list, which I gave a 3… in retrospect, that album is borderline 2.
Yet here, in the early ‘90s, Live Through This is a perfect example of the angsty music which was starting to take over the landscape.

I can’t say that I am not enjoying the experience, even if I still am a person who can’t stand Courtney and her attention-seeking-shit…

Kudo’s for this album, and kudo’s for getting over your hubby blowing his head off… I guess you lived through it!

Abbey RoadThe Beatles

Rated 10/10

The Good: Too much…
The Bad: Not enough…
The Ugly: My score…

What is there to write about this album? It is what it is… another fucking Beatles album that shows why they are one of the most successful bands in modern music history…

A fucking song about an Octopus Garden, really? Got to hand it to Ringo, he knows how to create quirky songs that just make you wish for more…

Lennon and McCartney both show us why they are who they are… sometimes did have to giggle a little, but maybe that’s because I was being tickled by my wife during Oh Darling

I could have used a little more Harrison… but who’s counting?

Lastly, what an album cover! Perfection almost…
I can’t think of a better way for a band like the Beatles to bow out!

5* graded to 5*

The Good: No tom-foolery here!
The Bad: Wait.. my eyes and ears have been deceived…
The Ugly: Distrust… all about distrust…

My first thought when this album presented itself was “oh shit, not another ‘60s psychedelic album”… yet, that opening track was awesome! I couldn’t believe my ears!

Of course, the rest of the album, including California Dreaming, was enough for me to look forward to the album ending… Sad really, because the harmonies are nice, they all know how to use their voice… just that I don’t like the era…

Straight down the middle as they do deserve some points… 2 1/2 upgraded

The Good: We will be shown mercy!
The Bad: Maybe, just maybe, we wanted the sisters to show us something else?…
The Ugly: Finding out that one of the sisters isn’t a sister…

So, 1987, a good year!
A year when Sign ‘o the Times came out, or Michael Jackson’s Bad, U2’s the Joshua Tree, Appetite For Destruction by GNR, or even Introducing the Hardline According to TTD… and on and on the list can go.
It is said that, if one takes a good look at the ‘80s then there are two years that are doing their best to be one of the best years EVER in music: 87 and 84…

Now, why am I spouting forth the above history lesson?
Well, listening to Floodland there was one thing that stood out, which is the simple fact that this album, though a great listen, is late to the party.
By 1987 sounds had started to change. The reverb on the snare drum, with the compression added to it, was gone… over… finito.

So why is this album then critical listening?… I don’t have the full list of 1987 albums that are included on the 1001… however, why did a user have to add INXS’s Kick? One of the greatest fucking album of that year.

Anyway, off to find out what album will (hopefully) thrill me today!

This one, 3*… would’ve been 4* if it had been released 5 years earlier...
