1984Van Halen

Rated 8/10

I don't like guitars as much as this album probably demands, but its still pretty great.

Bleh, stuck in first gear. I know I don't have a great ear for country but this sounds so flat. Harmonies are almost too locked in so they're totally indistinct, nothing interesting going on melodically or rhythmically, zero energy, I guess I'm supposed to be listening to the vocals and lyrics but those don't really interest me either.

Music is boring and something about the production is very grating to me. Would still be a two but I had to listen to middle aged pedo Steven Tyler talk about 'young lust'.

The video for New York, New York starts with a screen saying "This video was shot on Friday September 7th, 2001"

I quite enjoyed this. I don't know if I would ever pick this to listen to again as a whole album, but its a really excellent showcase of Biggie's skill and some superb production.

My preference is certainly for somewhat more melodic stuff, but there's a lot to like here. Some of the vocals are kind of just the singer angrily speaking words related to the theme of the song with no sense of rhythm and falling behind the tempo.

I really appreciate the extremely tight songwriting and hooks here. Performances are great and the songs are excellent. Its a little much for a full album listen though.

RevolverThe Beatles

Rated 10/10

I started listening to the 2009 remaster and then realized by the end of the first song there was a more recent one. Much improved stereo mixing. Excellent record, The Beatles continue to be good. Fun harmonies, interesting instrumentation, simply lovely. Nothing quite as towering to me as the back half of Abbey Road, but really, what is. Also, I think the other reviewers are being too hard on Yellow Submarine. Did I like it as a kid? Of course I did; not sure why that's relevant.
