I enjoyed this, but it's so sickly sweet I had to listen to it in multiple sessions lest I get a cavity

It's pop. That's all. Although I am incredibly discomfited by the album cover.

I do already like a lot of Britney Spears songs (mostly her later stuff, like "Toxic" and many of the songs on her "Blackout" album, but never a full album). This, her debut, is full of ballads, manufactured beats, and bubblegum pop. Lyrically (and I could tell this about the song titles straight off, too), the songs are about wanting to make someone else happy and pining after romantic relationships. I understand this album changed the pop landscape at the time, but I find it juvenile at my current age (32). I was a young child when this came out, like 5, so this wasn't music that defined my childhood, because I was still listening to what my parents were listening to (Nirvana and 80s stuff, for example). I did like "The Beat Goes On".

The album tracks on this didn’t do anything for me but it’s hard to fault the singles if you’re looking for great pop music.

I do massively prefer the Travis cover of Baby One More time.

Britney's voice is actually really great

Ja, dit is giga achterhaalde laboratorium-gekweekte pop, maar ik zou liegen als ik zou ontkennen dat er knallers van reffreintjes te horen zijn op deze plaat. We kennen natuurlijk allemaal de singles, maar vooral bonus track 'Autumn Goodbye' is echt een bop.

Ja sam bila djevojčica u 2000-tim. Ja sam bila ciljna grupa ove muzike. Ali tad sam se pravila da sam kul i odbijala slušati ovakve stvari. Sad me nije sramota priznati da ovdje imaju 3-4 genijalne, savršene pop pjesme. Samo što kao i svaki drugi pop album iz ovog perioda ima bukvalno singlove i fillere, ništa između toga pa je ukupno lošije od onog što znamo s mtv-a. Pošto dajem samo dvicu moram naglasiti da je ovo jedna od najjačih dvica koje ću ikad dati.

First time listening to a Britney Spears album- I gotta give some respect to whoever wrote and produced this one. Pure bubble-gum, bop in your seat music start to finish. Nothing deep but some real ear worms. So commercial, it’s no surprise it sold millions. Honestly the singing is pretty average, but with her looks it was a sure bet the videos would push Britney into superstar status. It’s formulaic as hell, but it’s not a bad formula. Unfortunately knowing the toll this took on Britney turns this pop masterclass into a bittersweet listen.

Urrgghhh, do I have to? (Imagine that being said in the voice of a twelve year old girl who is told they will clean their room before they go out with their friends. AND you HAVE to be back by 9:00 no matter what or I'll take your phone away, again.)

I liked this better than Ray of Light by Madonna. Interesting to read about all the Swedish bros who put this together. They got their bag, as the saying goes. Too bad about Britney though. Maybe be kind to someone today, everyone is either coming out of a storm, in a storm, or going into a storm.

It was pop crap when it came out, it's pop crap today.

nem vou falar mto nao. é o SUCO do pop feito pra explodir e tocar em tudo quanto é lugar e graças a deus funcionou! deus abençoe a britney spears.

Enjoyed this far more than I was expecting to. Well produced and catchy, and Britney has the talent and charisma to make it a really fun listen. Some songs were a bit much, especially towards the end, and 'Email my heart' hasn't exactly aged well, but overall I liked it

There are a few songs on this album that are worthwhile, but to me, most of them feel like filler. I skipped a few and wished I would have skipped a few more

Deux jours après Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears. Au moins, il y a une forme de cohérence. Cohérence également dans le constat : quelques tubes pop ultra-efficaces, voire légendaires pour le titre éponyme, au sein d'un album de producteurs, manufacturé à l'extrême par Max Martin, notamment, pour exploser dans les charts, option overdose de sucre dégoulinant et de paillettes multicolores. La différence avec Justin Timberlake, c'est que cet album marque aussi la naissance d'une incontestable icône pop, pour le meilleur et surtout pour le pire (difficile de ne pas ressentir un vrai malaise face à la sexualisation soft mais ostentatoire, dès la pochette, de celle qui n'était encore qu'une adolescente...). De fait, je ne suis pas le public, mais difficile de contester que ...Baby One More Time a sa place dans cette liste, ne serait-ce que parce que toute la pop des années 2000 en copiera le patron.

e-mail my heart has got to be the funniest song title ever

Britney is wel de overtreffende trap van het type Disney-zangeresje (al lees ik dat ze die 'opleiding' maar kort heeft 'genoten'). Alles rond de hit is uitgedacht. Elk plaatje, elk mediamoment, elke houding, elk pasje. Dus de muziek is natuurlijk al helemaal extreem geproduceerd. Alles om op te vallen. Is het dan niet creatief? Dat kan ik eigenlijk niet eens stellen over Baby one more time. Stoort het me? Ja, dat wel. Het voelt glad en hijgerig. Maar dat is de bedoeling natuurlijk. Maar wat je er ook van vindt, je kan niet om dit nummer heen als het over de muziek van de afgelopen decennia hebt.

Maar geldt dat ook voor het album? Zo'n nummer als Crazy, is gewoon een aftreksel van Baby One More Time. Sometimes is is tergend saai. En met die duidingen, heb je eigenlijk alle singles wel te pakken.

Daaromheen zijn duidelijke opvullers geplaatst. Bijvoorbeeld zo'n zinloze cover van The Beat Goes On. Doe het dan op zin minst op jouw eigen manier.

Not something I would seek out to listen to but kinda fun. The lyrics to Email My Heart are hilarious and date the whole thing perfectly.

Whoever claimed Britney is a soprano on her Wikipedia page hasn't heard her sing the words "ooh baby baby".
