I do not understand the hype around this guy. This is the second album of his I’ve gotten from the list and once again I am underwhelmed. I know he has a cult following, and is critically acclaimed but it’s just not for me. I don’t like his voice, and his songs are boring.

John Mulaney has a joke about making a birthday poster. It’s about how you start out overly ambitious and then have to squish the last letters in at the end because you started too big on the first ones. That’s kind of how I feel about this list. The guy who made it was like yeah we’lol do 1001 albums and then after a couple hundred realized he bit off more than he could chew and had to fill in the rest with just albums that he’d heard before or at least heard of.

That’s not to say this album is bad but it’s not great. A lot of it sounds like a Lou Reed cover band trying to do originals. I like Lou Reed, but there are plenty of his albums that would be better for this list than this album.

Some of the beats were cool. I guess I’m not a grime fan cause mostly I found this not great. Some songs were decent but a lot of it was annoying.

This was cool but it dragged in the second half. This album was ahead of its time, some of it is dated but some of it still sounds fresh. The first 45 minutes or so was going to get a 4 but it just kept going too long and the last few songs were to similar sounding to be necessary. Cut a few songs and this is an easy 4 but as it is, it’s a 3 for me.

I liked this album. I do agree that it may not warrant being on this list, I mean it doesn’t even have its own Wikipedia page, that’s pretty weird. But it’s a pretty unique album, and I enjoyed it overall.

All night long was kinda cool. I like how bass forward this album is. Aside from that these guys had one song idea and repeated it ad nauseum. It’s just a break beat, a bass line, a non-catchy hook, and a guy “rapping”. Seriously for a group called Stereo MCs the rapping on this is atrocious if you can call it rapping, it’s more like talking with some end rhymes.

This was cool, crazy it came out in ‘89. It sounds way more modern than the 90s stuff I’ve heard off this list.

I don’t think Linkin Park is bad at what they do I just happen to think why they do is bad. I remember when this came out I felt like the only person in the world who didn’t like it, but I was right, it stinks. I will say, the riff on One Step Closer is a solid riff, an I’m not opposed to turntablism in rock music. It’s just the songs are cheesily melodramatic, the rapping is bland and mediocre and I can’t stand the whiny guys voice.

Not bad, a lot of it I kind of zoned out, it easily becomes background music. Also, I guess I’ve never heard the non-radio version of Monwy for Nothing, a lot of F slurs! I get it’s from a different time and I think the context was almost mocking people who use the term, I was just surprised because I’ve heard that song a ton on the radio.

There’s Springsteen albums that deserve to be on this list. This is not one of them. Nothing wrong with this album but that’s the problem. It’s just another pop rock album, there is nothing special about about it, it’s bland.

HorsesPatti Smith

Rated 6/10

This was ok. Patti Smith gets a lot of love and I’m sure it’s well deserved, but listening to this album without doing any other research I thought it was just ok.

The first two songs made me think I would not enjoy this album. I thought it’s really not very good without Stills and Nash. After that though it gets pretty cool. This would be a great album to space out to. Most of it is kinda jammy ethereal music. There’s not much for hooks and it all blends together in a good way.

The guitar work on here is terrific. Unfortunately only three songs feature guitar. The rest of the album is not good. There’s a song that’s just a bongo solo, a bongo should not be the main instrument on a song let alone the sole instrument. The song after that is another bongo solo but there’s also someone randomly banging on a tin can and a guy yelling at you. Other than that there’s a lot of call and response songs and I just don’t like call and response. Also, don’t listen to this with headphones! The stereo mixing is so harsh. There’s a song where it’s just soft bongos in one ear and two women screeching at you in the other ear. It sounds terrible in headphones. So basically, great guitarist, awful everything else.

There are songs on here that are so over the top that I was getting anxiety while driving. There’s also some chill stuff. Paper planes is a classic and I’ve always had a soft spot for mango pickle. The rest of the album is nothing special but I’ll give her points for going all out on this one, the songs aren’t that great but they are to the max.

I can appreciate the importance of and inclusion of this album on the list but it’s not one that I’ll ever listen to again. I can hear how this was an influential band/album but it was kinda boring to me. I also did not like the singers voice.
