This album is so weird. Here is a list of things found on this album....
A) opera singers
B medieval renaissance music
C) flutes/sitar/weird instruments
D) black metal
E) screaming
F) dubstep
G) 8-bit NES music
H) chickens/random noise bytes....
I) french bistro music
The album starts with dude screaming. I assume that is to make the listener pay attention, because what comes next is hilariously chaotic, but oddly works. It's actually not bad at all. Extra points for being so fucking weird

One of the original ska punk bands alongside Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Most of the band members went on to form the band Rancid after Operation Ivy's short 2 year run. Solid album.

Probably one of the coolest album covers I've seen in a minute. The more you look at it, the more you see.
But, that is where the good ends... This is listed as Avant-garde metal, whatever the fuck that is..... (oh, a hipsters way of saying experimental metal I guess...) It's like slow, atmospheric orchestral type stuff with random bursts of thrashy black metal and screaming...
Also, remember that moron John Zorn? We had one of his albums on the original list... (Spy VS Spy: The Music of Ornette Coleman). The dude that is credited with creating the genre of thrash jazz? Yeah that guy..... This band were signed to his record label, Tzadik Records, at the time of the recording of this album. That should tell you everything you need to know about this fucking pile.
Admittedly, the song The Manifold Curiosity is solid, but the rest of the album is way too out there for me. Jazz and Black Metal shouldn't be put together.

1) Really fucking dumb album cover.
2) completely lacking in substance. Just computer produced indie pop with lyrics that are auto tuned to hell. (Admittedly, the second half of the album was better. It switched to a kind of modern R&B lite. Not as terrible, but too little too late).
This is what's wrong with modern music. No one cares if there is any passion or artistic talent on display any more. I bet in 10 years no one will remember "The 1975" and the world will be better for it.
I was upset to learn that at least one more album from these morons is in this list. I am not looking forward to it.
Favorite songs: Be My Mistake, TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME, Give Yourself a Try
Least favorite songs: The 1975, The Man Who Married a Robot/Love Theme (really....too dumb to sing your own songs so you opt to get Siri to dictate it for you...)

Is it just me, or does the dude on the album cover look exactly like 90's WWE wrestling superstar HBK (Shawn Michaels).
This album sounds like it is right out of the 80's. It is Australian synth pop/soft rock. Nothing to write home about, but not bad.
Favorite songs: Marlon Brando, Runnin' Outta Luck, Country Figs, Candy May, Stranger's Kiss, Politics of Love
Least favorite songs: The Chihuahua (he says the word pussy way too many times in this song...)

The beginnings of Nu Metal, which took over the music scene in the late 90's/early 00's, which happened to line up perfectly with when I was in middle school as a rebellious teenager. At the time I was trying to push boundaries and listen to more edgy music, and Korn came on the scene. I must say, Blind is the perfect album opener for a teenager looking to piss off his parents.
Overall though, as influential as the whole nu metal scene was in shaping my transition into harder music, as an adult it doesn't really hold up. It's truly just thrashy, heavily distorted instruments, and yelling/swearing. Most of the time Jonathan Davis just growls anyways.
So, to sum up, as a teenager, great....but as an adult....corny (pun intended).
Favorite songs: Shoots and Ladders, Divine, Blind

#1.....dumb band name.
#2...... this is that weird blues rock/jazz/indie shit that was huge in the 90's with bands like Cake, Beck (but he did it right), The President's of the United States of America, Butthole Surfers.....etc. This strange genre of music was either done really well (like Beck), or was complete shit (which is what we have here).
Truly painful listening experience.
Favorite songs: Down to This, "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago
Least favorite songs: Bus to Beelzebub, Janine....and the rest of this shitty fucking album....

Like blues crossed with country and acid house? Sounds fucked, but it works. Also, these dudes created the theme song for The Sopranos (Woke Up This Morning). Also, props to the band for covering John Prine's classic: Speed of the Sound of Loneliness. They did a good job.
Upon seeing the cover and band name, I feared I would have to suffer through some horrible twangy country rap/pop drivel, but this isnt bad.

This is my album choice. This band/album is the soundtrack to Canadian summers. Bonfires/ camping trips/ fishing at the lake... This was such a formative album for me in my teenage years as I was shaping my musical tastes. I mentioned in another Tragically Hip album review that it was my cousin, who lived in a more urban setting that introduced me to The Hip in the first place. Once introduced to them, I went back to my rural town and bought a few of their records. I've been a fan ever since. What I love about them is that they change their sound slightly for every album they made. This album is blues rock, but other albums lean harder to the country rock/art rock sound. Gord was always experimenting and weaving beautiful poetry into music.
Lyrics such as (from the song 38 years old):
Same pattern on the table, same clock on the wall;
Been one seat empty 18 years now;
Freezing slow time away from the world;
He's 38 years old, never kissed a girl
Such vibrant imagery to that chorus. The song is loosely based off of the jailbreak that occured from Millhaven Penitentiary near Kingston, ON. The song is sung from the perspective of a younger brother who's older brother was locked up after murdering the man who raped his sister. Just the thought of how time stands still for his family as he serves out his sentence...
When given the opportunity to select an album for others to listen to, I felt compelled to represent Canada in some way, simply because the original 1,001 list leaned hard on obscure British Britpop/ Madchester/ electronica/ shoegaze... I needed to represent something that meant so much to me. So crack a beer, sit out under the stars around a bonfire, grab a guitar and a few good friends, and enjoy life.
Favorite songs: Opiated, Boots or Hearts, Trickle Down, When the Weight Comes Down, I'll Believe in You (Or I'll Be Leaving You Tonight), Blow at High Dough, 38 Years Old, New Orleans is Sinking, She Didn't Know, Everytime You Go, Another Midnight
