PhrenologyThe Roots

Rated 10/10

Such a fun album. This is one of the best hip hop albums out there. The mixture of styles, instruments, guest artists and lyrical topics make for a spectacular listen.

Couldn’t get this album on my streaming service, but I listened to the other strange cargo albums. Not really my thing - repetitive 80s electronica.

I really appreciate something different on this list, and this one qualifies. There are some brilliant moments buried by intentionally poor recording and a need to end songs prematurely. Man, if this was recorded normally and edited down to about 12 fully realized 3 minute tracks, this might be one of those albums that everyone you know owns. Since it isn’t that, I think it’ll just be a music nerd’s go-to album for impressing non-musical types.

I definitely appreciate hearing this album for the historical significance. I’d never even heard of this band before. That said, probably not coming back to this one.
