RootsSepultura

Rated 8/10

I’ve never really given Sepultura a chance. I must have heard something years ago and decided I didn’t like them, and just never really revisited. And while I’m still not a huge fan of the vocals - wow, I finally understand why they’re such a beloved metal band! They incorporate sounds atypical to the genre without losing anything that makes them metal as fuck. Would I listen to this all the time? I would not. But can I see myself sometime down the road, if I’m in the right mood, popping this on? Hell yes I can.

I love this album, man. It was so weird, and experimental, and just unlike anything else I had listened to. I'm not surprised it has a low rating, but that doesn't mean it's not excellent. you have to remember that apparently the vast majority of people in this project are boomers that want to be force fed yet *another* goddamn 70s album.

I know it's supposed to be satirical, but when I hear "nigger" being sung repeatedly by a white man, it kind of throws me off wanting to listen to the rest of the album.

BEYONCÉBeyoncé

Rated 6/10

It's not my thing, but I understand the allure. It's a very good album, I can tell. Good production, the beats are outstanding. She has an amazing voice, and she's very powerful.

I think it deserves higher than 3 stars, but in my personal rating scale, a 4 star review means "I may occasionally play this album of my own free will" and I really cannot see myself ever craving a Beyonce album.

I think the last half of the album slowed down a bit, and at over an hour it's about 20 minutes too long. 3.5 stars

Stealing this from the top comment because it perfectly encapsulates my feelings on this record:

Great guitar players need a lead singer who can do two of the following three: 1) sing, 2) entertain, and 3) write music. All three are not needed but two of the three are. Pete Townshend found Daltrey who could do 1 and 2. Keith Richards found Mick who can do 2 and 3 and Jimmy Page found Plant who can do 1 and 2.

Keith Relf couldn't do any of the three. The result is excellent guitar playing (Jeff Beck’s in the case of this album) being stranded in a wasteland of songs that, from all other perspectives, are painfully mediocre.

This is unexpectedly terrific. I love the singer's voice, and the slightly fuzzy, laid back vibe of it all. Very, very pleasantly surprised at this one, but it's excellent.

Rated 6/10

Just boring and repetitive. It's inoffensive as background noise, but it's really just not very interesting.

Writing a song about Josef Mengele is ballsy. Making it the opening track is metal as fuck.

I respect it, because much of the music I love was made by people who realized heavy music was possible by listening to this album. But it’s…not very good.

Is it jazz? Yes it is. Is it *good* jazz? Who can tell! It’s fine, I guess, as background music in JC Penny’s, or in a fancy elevator. Is it better that any other jazz record that’s ever been released? I have no idea, because it sounds identical to every other jazz album this project has made me listen to.

Pretty catchy, but I’m not terribly surprised I e never heard of them. Apparently they’re kind of big in England? 3.5 stars

Simultaneously great and a little disappointing. First off, it's toooo long. but there were a ton of toe tappers on this album! it had me wiggling my knee and tapping on the table for the entire album. That said, it does get a little repetitive, and I think there are several songs/moments that didn't age well, they just kind of sound like noise. but on the other hand, this is terrific music to put on your headphones to stay motivated to get some work done!

Overall, I think this is a good album, but do I see myself ever playing it on purpose? I do not. 3.5 stars.

Imagine being so clueless as to rate this anything other than an instant 5 stars. Imagine being so obtuse that you couldn’t understand the fact that you’re listening completely unique, something that is lyrically dense yet accessible, something that reads like a book of poetry, something that layers music, sounds and language to tell a story of a man, of a community, of a people.

Exceptional. Magical. Genius. Perfection.

It's pretty OK. There are shades of punk, and shades of glam - neither genre I'm particularly fond of, but it does it in a fairly interesting way. I don't think I'd listen to it on purpose, but I'd have no issues with it playing in the background.

It's nice, quaint, early 90s rap. Kinda funny, but there's some sneaky good word play in there as well, if you're listening. Beats are a bit too poppy for my tastes, but that's just 90s rap (non-gangsta edition) for you.

Weird but not unpleasant. Until the last two minutes of the album when they apparently felt that the perfect way to end things would be a series of fart noises. Other than that, though, it’s ok.
