Carlos Santana is the king of doing that thing where you hit two guitar strings at once and then bend them, but you bend one of them slightly more, so that the two notes rub against each other.

BTW, imagine playing Woodstock before your first album comes out. And absolutely crushing it so hard.

As a casual observer/admirer of jazz, I was a little disappointed by this one. I was hoping for gold, but found pyrite. Her voice has a nice quality to it on the longer, sustained notes, but the songs leave no lasting impression. Everything is right on the surface.

Good album, if imbalanced. Finest Worksong, Exhuming McCarthy, It's the End of the World As We Know It, and The One I Love are all great songs brought down by a duo of lesser tracks, namely Lightnin' Hopkins (he deserved better) and Oddfellows Local 151 (they presumably deserved better as well). Also, what is a skronky sax doing on an R.E.M. song (Fireplace)?

I was not familiar with this, but I thought it was pretty good. Fun, melodic, colorful, soulful, a little trippy. Some bad reviews at the top, do these guys root for the wrong football team or something?

Probably the best band ever to come out of Down High School, Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland, UK. I didn't like it.

This album is like a T.S. Eliot poem. Quite long and difficult to digest.

The quality of the music is mostly 3-star level, sure; but the absolute daftishness of its conception, birth, and execution is just stunning. It really does my head in.

I think, we, as full-album listeners, sometimes forget that it's completely okay to be a singles band.

Pretty interesting mash-up of genres here. I enjoyed this album even though I'm not really up to speed on prog or alt-rock or post-hardcore or experimental metal or whatever this is. I found the whole thing compelling regardless. A soupçon of psychedelia really ties it all together.

This makes me think less of all of the Nick Cave albums I haven't gotten yet. Sorry but this album stinks like yesterday's diapers.

This is kind of a weird one. The front half of the album is all guitar and vocals. The bass finally emerges out of the wall of fuzz on track seven, but it's too little too late. (Perhaps Lou Barlow was better off getting fired?).

Then they really lost me on the final track, which is very screamy. And coming in at almost six minutes— well, that is 15% of the album right there, out the window.

For me, this is not a five-star album because it's consistent and every song is amazing. It's a five-star album because the great tracks outweigh the mediocre ones. Every Beatles album is like this.

Do I know this band? Looks like I added their album Zeit to my streaming library on August 2nd, 2024 at 9:35 in the morning and never listened to it. I guess I don't.

I think this album has a lot going for it. She's obviously a great singer and it's obvious that a lot of effort when into the entire writing and recording process. The end result clearly captured the hearts of a lot of people. The complaints I see in negative reviews seem a bit piddling and at times even spiteful.
