This was unadulterated torture to sit through. She completely mangles everything attempted here, and every song is wildly over-produced. Points for her unapologetic attitude, but in the end I have to rate the music, and it's just horrible.

I was dreading this, but I actually enjoyed how theatrical it was. It really played like a soundtrack to a musical, but without cutaways to hacky acting.

3.5/5.0

Very atmospheric, but there's just not enough happening for this to be worth the time. And I know asking for "action" in an atmospheric album sounds like a contradiction, but The Ruins of Beverast, Summoning, and Wolves in the Throne Room are able to manage it. This album is like drowning in boredom.

Sucks that this album is so long. If they cut it down to the best 40 minutes this is an easy 5 stars. However, by the end of the album I was begging for it to be over.

Weird album - doesn't sound like anything else made at the time. I could do without the honking sax, but the rest of the musical choices are a breath of fresh air.

On the fantastic website Metalstorm, this album has the third highest aggregate score of any album (after Judas Priest's "Painkiller" and Death's "Symbolic"), and it's not surprising. Every instrument is totally on point. Nick Menza and Marty Friedman deliver career-defining performances on the drums and lead guitar respectively, while David Ellefson's bass and Dave Mustaine's guitar are in fine form, per usual. The songs do conform to the thrash template - but only partially. They constantly breakdown (foreshadowing the prevalence of groove in metal for the foreseeable future), and dive into unexpected musical choices (the NWOBHM intro of "Lucretia", the bluesy riff of "Tornado of Souls") leaving the listener wondering what's coming next. The only real complaint here is Dave's subpar vocals - but they're delivered with such venom that they really fit the cynical and angry lyrics. A masterclass of metal, one of the best albums ever made regardless of genre, and far and away Megadeth's best.

5.0/5.0: Iconic

This album perfectly captures a sadly unraveling mind - from the weirdness of the music, it's mad variety, the great album cover; it's a nice little package of strangeness. You can also definitely tell Robert Wyatt was involved with some of the childish sounding music, but it really fits. I can understand why some people might despise this record, but in its context it's a great snapshot of Syd Barrett.

Incredibly long, but also incredibly enjoyable. Music is very original and enjoyable, there's a lot of variety, and her vocals are obviously great.
