Didn’t realise Tom Hanks made an album while he was stuck on that island.
Lovely touch to dedicate it to Wilson too.

Don’t think I’d ever listened to Tom Petty before this.
On the other hand, it’s equally possible I’ve heard every song he’s ever done and instantly forgotten them all.
New sub-genre created: ‘forget-me-rock’

The ultimate low-energy, can’t-be-arsed album.
-Hungover? Best album
-Jet lag? Best album
-Bed-ridden with the flu? Best album
-Can’t be fucked with anything because it’s a cold Sunday evening in late November, it’s raining sideways, you have work in the morning and haven’t ironed a shirt, your dog is sick, your wife left you for your childhood friend, you just dropped your last piece of toast butter-side-down on your new chinos, your phone is at 2% with no charger in sight, Antiques Roadshow is on the tv but you can’t find the remote so you’ll probably just keep watching it to see how much this Victorian chamber pot is worth? Best album, probably.

The two songs you already know are good.
The rest exists on a scale from dull to awful
Rated 6/10
Nice to have something a bit different on this list

My wife is from Manchester so of course I am forced to listen to this regularly against my will.
After the best part of 2 decades I have developed Stockholm syndrome.
I now find myself enjoying it and singing along in a faux Manc accent.
Mayyyybehhh Am a rock n roll staaaaah.
Or mayybehh someone could call the police and free me from the basement I’m tied up in and being subject to Oasis every day. How I long to see the Sunsheeyyyyyyne

Quite enjoyed having this on in the background whilst working but I don’t ‘get’ what makes Thelonious Monk one of the all time greats.
Maybe I’m not cultured enough.

Forget the Velvet Underground.
All your favourite artists’ favourite artist is actually Big Star.
-First exposure was Elliott Smith’s cover of Thirteen.
-Second was Yo La Tengo’s cover of Take Care
-Third is Jeff Buckley’s cover of Kanga Roo.
Exactly the kind of thing that deserves to be on this list.
Man yells loudly in French over poorly recorded orchestra.

The thing with concept albums is you need to buy into the concept.
For me; this story is fucking stupid and dragging it out to a double LP just sort of angered me.

Every time I’ve had anything proggy I roll my eyes and instantly go in wondering whether the cringe fest will be a 1 or 2 star album….
Then I actually listen to it and half the time end up really enjoying it.
This is the perfect example. Hugely over the top but I actually really enjoyed it.

As a teen, like many teens before me and since, I got into Nirvana in a big way. I always gravitated to MTV Unplugged more than any studio album.
In 2005 (2 years after Elliott’s death), I used to post on nerdy music forums like ateaseweb and sonic youths message board. Some person whose name I’ll never know suggested Elliott Smith to me on the basis I liked MTV unplugged.
I can’t really explain the effect it had on me at that point in my life and I can’t listen to this (or any other of his albums) rationally since.
Always 5 stars whenever I come back and I suspect it always will be.

Turns out these aren’t 1 hit wonders at all.
At least 5 or 6 hit wonders.
Not sure id call it a ‘must hear’ but I look forward to catching The Cardigans play at 2pm on the 3rd stage of some festival at some point in the future.
Wow this isn’t really my usual kind of jazz at all but it was a lot of fun and caught me in just the right mood to enjoy it

One of my brothers favourite albums growing up,
The first 3 songs are straight up bangers. Yes blatant Dinosaur Jr and Pixies rip offs but I love both of those bands too so that’s ok.
Unfortunately in the following 9 songs only
‘Kung Fu’ and ‘Oh Yeah’ reaches the same level of catchiness.
Should have been an awesome 5 song EP instead of a 50 minute long slog of an album.
Sorry Gazz

First day back in work after 10 days of annual leave.
This made it easier.
Funky.

I enjoyed this without being blown away. Feel as though I like the aesthetic and the production more than songs at times but it’s a pleasant listen either way.
Enjoyed it enough that it made me go back and relisten to Felt Mountain. Two very different albums but similar in quality. Ended up rescoring that to 3 stars too.
Rated 6/10
Influence of both David Bowie and Talking Heads is obvious.
I love both so it makes sense that I enjoyed this too though I’d struggle to recall any of the songs as particular stand outs as soon as it ended….
Rated 10/10
It’s Joni Mitchell
