Great southern rock album. Free bird. Enough Said.

Lynyrd Skynyrd. Yes they are a classic rock band, but one I never cared for. Let me check wiki for the reason. Ah yes Blues Rock - not a genre I like.

I have never heard a full album of there's and this had a lot of energy and strong vocals but the blues sigh.. the blues...Wait a minute, what is this? Country Rock with "Tuesdays Gone" this is fantastic! Suddenly i'm interested! Simple Man yeeeeah! On no, and we're back to Blue's Rock with Mississippi Kid. Well at least I tried.

We end with Freebird, a song I don't usually like but I have to admit it is a thunderhorse of a song, and imagine hearing this for the first time, instead of 1000 x due it to being a staple on Classic Rock radio stations (or any radio station for that matter).

I would like to give it 3 and a half stars. But it will have to be three. Perversely, I am thinking of buying this album. High praise for me.

Ok so what do I say about this? I mean the whole 'yeah these guys are totally racist assholes' thing is kind of hard to get past. But as with other artists with problems (and to be fair that's probably like 90% of artists) I'll try to just focus on the music. Fantastic guitars, obviously. I think that's probably what they were most known for. Well that and Freebird. I mean the music is good, although I'm not really a fan of the whole southern rock genre in general. But I do have to say that for a first album, this one does have a ton of what a lot of people would consider to be classics. I'm not sure I'd agree but that's a personal preference. And I think I've heard Freebird enough. Also, why the hell are there so many people in this band? Surely the music they played on this record didn't need 7 people in the band. And their current picture on Spotify has 9 people in it. Why? 3/5

Classic album. Generally the singles are better than the deeper cuts. Simple Man being the best track on the album.

For my money, Green Grass and High Tides by The Outlaws was always the better epic southern rock song vs Freebird. Green Grass just kept the same feel and vibe through the whole song, even in the solos, whereas Freebird switched it up and I always felt the two halves of the song kinda fought eachother.

Still a great track, just overplayed.

I'm usually pretty harsh on American dad rock but this album is banger after banger.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is probably one of the first bands I was introduced to via Guitar Hero II, rocking out to a cover of "Free Bird" on a plastic guitar controller. It was a cool time as a young teen getting into rock music, and as such, there's a certain nostalgia with checking out the bands I was exposed to early on. With revisiting Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut in mind, does it still hold up all these years later?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes. (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) represented the craftsmanship and standards the band held during their original run with vocalist and lyricist Ronnie Van Zant. His words delivered in that Southern drawl were observations from hard lessons learned in life. The relationship drama of "I Ain't the One" and "Gimme Three Steps", the perils of alcoholism on "Poison Whiskey", living in poverty while the American elite continue to profit on "Things Goin' On". These stories still feel resonant today in how they were told over the twin guitar riffing of Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, the tight rhythm section of Ed King and Bob Burns, and the complementing keyboard flair of Billy Powell.

There are three songs in particular on this album that I want to highlight. Near the beginning is the seven-minute ballad "Tuesday's Gone", using the allegory of riding off a train away from a former love to speak about the band's changed trajectory after signing to MCA Records, sold with eloquence as the orchestral strings kick in. Ending side one is "Simple Man", the centerpiece of the record, about a mother passing valuable wisdom to her child, inspired by the passing of Ronnie's grandmother. It's a simple three-chord progression song, but man, does the writing and slow-burn soloing not elevate it to great heights. Finally, as I've alluded to earlier, this album ends with "Free Bird", a nine-minute ode to the desire for freedom that comes in many forms, culminating in an extended jam session with the band where Gary and Allen trade solos and a sense of euphoria rushes over me each time.

I know that Lynyrd Skynyrd tends to get a bad rap with the outside associations of this band to the Southern United States' misplaced affection for the long-dead confederacy and backwards-looking ideals, and the band's rebirth in the 90s with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny did nothing to ameliorate that. But the original Ronnie Van Zant run is timeless in its simple comfort, and their debut album exemplifies that best.

As southern as southern rock gets. Good hard driving rock with an edgy guitar right up front.

Rated 6/10

it’s fine and now it’s gone with the wind

Rated 4/10

Pretty disappointing. I was excited to finally hear Freebird, but it didn't do much for me. The rest of the album has decent, passionate playing but is let down by average songwriting and clichéd lyrics.

Rated 8/10

A classic that takes the right frame of mind to listen...

Rated 8/10

If I drove a rusty pickup (beer cooler on the back), chewed tobacco, had an unhealthy obsession with fried chicken and had dubious views on "The Great Replacement Theory" because of something I'd seen on YouTube, it would be 5 stars.

So. 4 stars. It's pretty good isn't it.

Rated 4/10

sendo sincero, o conceito de southern rock me soa meio racista. eles usarem a bandeira dos confederados nos shows não ajuda também.
dito isso, algumas músicas só funcionam no guitar hero mesmo (alo free bird). eu passo.

Rated 8/10

The math on this one is tough. Three of my favorite classic rock songs (Free Bird, Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man), one of my least favorite (Gimme Three Steps), and a bunch of other songs that, yep, are adequate southern rock album tracks.

Rated 6/10

This band is good enough, but Southern Rock just isn't my thing. There are definitely some well known tracks on this one, so it's at least worthy of 3 stars.

Rated 6/10

Оверрейтед, як на мене.

Rated 8/10

A few of the greatest Lynyrd Skynyrd songs represented here. Simple Man, Teusdays Gone and of course Free Bird are the stand outs. The rest are fine tracks as well. Good album to get into Southern Rock.

Rated 8/10

This is a pretty good album that has such a killer ending it catapults the whole document into the stratosphere. I wonder if anyone could, when inevitably asked at a live show, just wow the audience and actually play “Freebird”.

Rated 6/10

Southern rock with a side of racism

Records like this are why I gave up on my initial attempt to listen to all of the albums in this list in chronological order when I reached the mid-70s
