Easy listening

Meh? It wasn't really anything that interested me.

Rated 4/10

Didn't actively hate this until I saw I was only halfway through.. No stand out tracks, but just a lot of 90s R'n'B..

I'm not sure I got who produced this? Could I get his name again? Tender Man? Tindermayn? 🫠

Great Album but holy shit Timbaland shut your fucking mouth

Rated 8/10

What a good debut album. Timbaland’s production and Missy were made for each other.

I’d never listened to this album beyond the singles, but i think it stands up against her best work.

The procession of guests perfectly complement their tracks. I’ll even forgive the trademark Ginuwine boinging noises.

I only knew The Rain (which I don't like) going into this. I found the whole thing really slow, boring.and repetitive. Not even the appearance of Busta, a man whose voice genuinely makes me smile, saved this. I didn't hate it, but have no desire to ever listen to it again.

Would get a 1.5 but I can't justify a 1 so it's getting a default 2.

The beats are quite good on this album. Love the production here and there's some great songs being interpolated and sampled. Missy Elliott has a nice flow too, usually reserved but there's times where she's flying through bars. I don't really click with the album though. It's kind of long and the songs that didn't have nice samples didn't really latch onto me. Fine album, important album but probably needs a relisten to appreciate it more.

It's not my cup of tea

Rated 8/10

It makes more than a little sense that Missy's debut is bookended by Busta, that other rapper whose ad-libs don't ornament but substantiate: 'ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky-ficky'; 'Iza bah bah zah zay / Iza zah zah zah zay'; 'Bam bam bam bam bili bili bom / Bam bili bili bili bili bili bili bom.' Like B.I.G., Elliott is so rhythmically gifted that one is inclined to pass over her lyricism, a shame since she's invested in rhymed content as well as sound. Like Lauryn, she raps and sings, often saving her best writing for the non-rapping parts: 'You don't wanna date / No ifs ands or waits, it's over babe.' And like none, she essentially invented vibe in the hip-hop context. I have but one doubt w/ this one, notably that it's a bit one-note, but a classic it is.

Rated 6/10

Not really a style of music I get on with. Liked the beat, the rhythm and her voice but all together gets 3 stars.

Rated 4/10

Timbaland's production is great but overall it's an average 90s rap album. It's overhyped and you could question it's place on the list, especially when there is another Missy album on the list.
Runs too long and has too many duds. 2/5.

Rated 8/10

Missy Elliott is truly Supa Dupa Fly. Great beats and rhymes.

Rated 6/10

One thing you can say about early Missy Elliott is her albums are fun, Timbaland production is tight as hell and undeniably of it's time, but Missy's raps are just so off the wall surreal one minute then super serious the next... It keeps you on your toes.

Rated 6/10

Pretty chill album that ran a little long for me and had me wanting to skip ahead during my close listen. She sounds great both singing and rapping, with an interesting meter most of the time, it was just a little too chill and lacked enough variety to really pull me in for the whole thing. Favorite tracks: Sock It To Me, The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Beep Me 911, Pass da Blunt, Don't Be Commin' (In My Face) (awful name, but very catchy track), Izzy Izzy Ahh.

Rated 4/10

Usually when I don't like an album, it's pretty clear why, and if it isn't clear, then I usually try to find a reason. However, I don't like this and I don't even care enough to figure it out.

Rated 6/10

Ugh. That homophobic asshole starting and ending the album really rubs me the wrong way. And it's hilarious how cliche the timbaland beats sound now. That being said there are some incredible songs on this. SOME.

Rated 2/10

I think this album was made in a lab to be as boring as possible.

Rated 8/10

Missy Elliott is someone I probably heard of before when I was a kid, listening to mainstream music with my sisters in the early 2000s and catching songs like "Work It" and "Get Ur Freak On". I hadn't gotten into her until this year with her performance at Coachella, which included the first two singles from her debut, Supa Dupa Fly. After listening, I consider this a respectable first record.

Missy commanded the mic on this album, alternating between smooth R&B singing and laid-back chill rapping over the high-end dancehall-inspired production from Timbaland. The ease with which she expresses her womanhood, in both the demand to be respected and the desire for intimacy with her partners, is astounding over these phat breakbeats with a few notable compositions built off samples. Not to mention, the number of guest appearances that bolster this record with their respective talents to make this feel like a joint effort, including Lil' Kim's opening verse on "Hit Em wit da Hee", Da Brat's closing rap on "Sock It 2 Me", and Aaliyah's sultry delivery opposite Missy on "Best Friends".

My only complaint with this debut is that it's rather long. This included multiple interlude tracks, including intro and outro tracks from Busta Rhymes, who serves as a hype man for this record, but doesn't feel necessary to the overall experience. Also, the self-gratification on Missy's part became a bit egregious to me towards the end, such as the lyrics of "I'm Talkin'" coming off as no more than "I'm great" and "look how well I rap".

Still, I overall enjoyed Supa Dupa Fly as the first big step for Missy Elliott, becoming a major influence for many female rappers to come.
